Spencer Rattler passed for 290 yards and four touchdowns in his first start and No. 5 Oklahoma rolled past Missouri State 48-0 on Saturday night. Rattler, the highly touted redshirt freshman from Phoenix, only played the first two quarters and helped the Sooners take a 41-0 lead. Rattler nearly didn't the chance to make his long-awaited splash. According to a report in the Springfield News-Leader, Missouri State president Clif Smart told the school's board of governors that the game had been in jeopardy because of Oklahoma's positive COVID-19 cases. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley confirmed it after the game. "It hung in the balance for a little bit, but we were able to do it," he said. "Thankfully we were able to."

Rattler took advantage of the opportunity and looked like a seasoned veteran. He completed 14 of 17 passes and had a 303.3 passer efficiency rating - the third-best single-game mark in school history. "I feel like I've earned a lot of trust from my guys on the team," he said. "Being the quarterback, you have to have that assertive leadership and bring certain qualities to you, and I feel like I'm still working on that, but doing a pretty good job with it." Rattler left an impression on Missouri State coach Bobby Petrino, who coached Heisman winner Lamar Jackson at Louisville in 2016. "I think his presence in the pocket, being able to find the open receiver - he's got a great quick release and can make all the different throws," Petrino said. The Sooners led 31-0 at the end of the first quarter and outgained the Bears 236 yards to 1. It was the first time since 2008 that Oklahoma scored at least 31 points in a first quarter and the sixth time in school history. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Trey Knox wasn't himself last year from the end of Week 2 onward. As a University of Arkansas freshman, Knox took a shot directly on his right hip late in the Razorbacks' 31-17 loss at Ole Miss on Sept. 7, one year and one day ago. The shot slowed him at the time, eventually cost him one game, and he never got completely comfortable the rest of the year, all while piling up 28 receptions for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns. "He put his helmet right on my joint," Knox said of the hit by linebacker Donta Evans that caused his injury in Oxford, Miss. Knox took the shot to his midsection, hesitated, then drove for a few more yards before needing a moment to get up and off the field. Koilan Jackson came in for him and scored on a 6-yard pass from Nick Starkel on the next snap.

The recovery for a joint that gets tested on every rep and every step was not swift. "It took me really the whole season," Knox said. "I was battling it the whole season. I was taking shots on it week after week after week, and it wasn't getting fully healed." Knox, who sat out the Texas A&M game to rest the injury for a week, speculated it was January before he felt right again. He's expecting to unleash his full potential in 2020. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson echo the thought that the closer a player is to the ball on any play, the harder it is to stand out. They've also used Kinlaw, a raw but gifted prospect when he enrolled and a multi-millionaire now, as a teaching tool. "We've been showing a lot of clips of Javon playing. You come in, you got good players in front of you, you know what it's supposed to look like," Robinson said. "Lot of times as a young player, you don't know what it looks like. You don't know what good is."

Pickens admitted the struggle of knowing what he was supposed to do last season. "Learning all the plays and not trying to mess up. That's where I got messed up, trying not to mess up and trying to be right and not look crazy out there on the field," he said. "It's improved a lot. I'm doing everything faster, I know the plays faster. When I was a freshman, it was a struggle getting the plays." As a sophomore there's no more learning curve. That's turned to power, knowledge and a path to domination. - The Post and Courier

  09/05/20 - Trey KnoxrSr/2024, South Carolina, 6-3, 234 (DS#16 TE) + More +

Trey Knox, another talented pass catcher and assumed starter, has somewhat quietly been putting together a solid preseason of his own, according to coaches. "He's doing well. He's making some plays," Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Tuesday via Zoom. "Obviously, we are making a big emphasis on our wideouts in their blocking. We've gotten better there. He's always been a physical guy. We continue to have to work on getting off man press and getting open. Part of the sacks and things we've had are we've got to get people open. And he's done a good job of that.

"He's a good one-on-one ball catcher. He's done a nice job. He practices extremely hard and his skills are getting better each day." Despite a five-game stretch to end last season in which Knox caught only two passes for 28 yards and a touchdown, he finished his freshman year with 385 receiving yards - third on the team - and three touchdowns, one shy of the team lead. Knox was one of only three Razorbacks with multiple receiving touchdowns in 2019. As a sophomore, Knox would like to get back into the groove he found in Weeks 2-4 last season. Against Ole Miss, Colorado State and San Jose State, Knox hauled in 20 of his 28 catches for 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Rattler was one of the focuses for the third season of the Netflix documentary series, "QB1: Beyond the Lights." The show, led by "Friday Night Lights" director Peter Berg, has followed three high school senior quarterbacks for each of its three seasons. Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm was one of three subjects of the first season. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields was featured in the second season. Rattler, along with Maryland's Lance LeGendre and Kentucky's Nik Scalzo, was on the third season, which was released last year. Rattler's 10-episode season is still available on the streaming service. - Norman Transcript

Spencer Rattler is the next man up in the Oklahoma quarterback factory. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley named Rattler the starter over Tanner Mordecai on Tuesday heading into the fifth-ranked Sooners' opener Sept. 12 against Missouri State. Rattler, a redshirt freshman, is the Big 12’s Preseason Newcomer of the Year. He was the consensus No. 1 quarterback nationally in the 2019 recruiting class. The pressure on Rattler will be great. Under Riley, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray have won the Heisman Trophy and Jalen Hurts was the runner-up last season. Riley believes Rattler has the tools to handle it. "I think his confidence and belief in himself and his teammates - I think that's the thing that stands about him right now," Riley said. "He's never been afraid of the moment, which for young players - that's a key thing, and I don't know that that's really coached. That's something that guys either have or they don't at a young age." - AP College Football

Israel Mukuamu, a starter at corner, who along with fellow corner Jaycee Horn, is drawing NFL draft buzz and considered one of the best corner tandems in the country. But realizing Mukuamu stands 6-4, USC's safeties have often been small, quick players who have no chance of outjumping a receiver and have problems tackling those receivers when they come down with the ball, it's often been a social media gripe about why Mukuamu doesn't move to safety. He won't move. But he'll play. "He reps at safety. Israel's very smart, he can play anything," Muschamp said. "Let's get the best four DBs out there. Right now, who those four are, I couldn't tell you." Mukuamu started the season opener at safety last year, then J.T. Ibe took over for the duration of the season except one game, when he handed off to Jammie Robinson. Summerville's Roderick helmed the other safety spot after Jamyest Williams transferred. - The Post and Courier

He moved into his apartment on the USC campus last week. Now he's waiting for the NCAA to rule on his immediate eligibility waiver request. "It's exciting. I'm ready to work," Brooks said. "That's all I can say about it. I'm just excited." Brooks caught 35 passes for 751 yards and six touchdowns last season. He was named to the first team of the All-SAC Team. He had 15 catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2018. - Charleston Post Courier

South Carolina added depth to its receiving corps with the commitment of transfer Jalen Brooks on Saturday. Brooks, from Harrisburg, North Carolina, committed to the Gamecocks after picking up an offer Friday from USC. He also had offers from Duke and North Carolina A&T. Brooks said his first contact with Muschamp was Friday night when he gave him the offer. And Muschamp was more than happy to welcome him to the Gamecock family. The 6-foot-3 Brooks played his first two seasons at Division II Wingate before signing this spring with Tarleton State, a school in Texas that is moving up to Division I. But he left Tarleton State to move closer to home because of a family situation. Brooks will have two years of eligibility left and can play this season if he is granted a waiver by the NCAA. He has filed a waiver seeking eligibility for this coming season, he said. - The State
