  11/07/21 - Parker WhiterSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-4, 207 (DS#5 K) + More +

When Shane Beamer accepted the South Carolina job last December, he recalled his days as Steve Spurrier's assistant and the big wins and raucous atmosphere when the Gamecocks were rolling. The first-year coach got his first true taste of that with Spurrier in the building as the Gamecocks routed Florida 40-17 on Saturday night. First-time starter Jason Brown threw for two touchdowns, Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White each rushed for over 100 yards and South Carolina's defense held the potent Gators' attack to just 82 yards rushing. "I remember days and nights like this" when he was here from 2007-2010 as the Gamecocks won their only SEC Eastern Division in that final season, Beamer said. "We're not there yet," Beamer cautioned. "We're still a work in progress, but we took a big step tonight." A step that few expected out of South Carolina (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference). The Gamecocks were routed at Texas A&M 44-14 two weeks ago and saw its starting quarterback Zeb Noland undergo knee surgery. The Gators (4-5, 2-5) entered averaging 242 yards a game on the ground and 483 yards of total offense, third best in the SEC.

But South Carolina became the first team this season to outgain them, 459-340. Parker White had a career-best four field goals and defensive tackle Jabari Ellis had an 18-yard fumble recovery touchdown to put South Carolina up 30-10 at halftime. "The fair just left town and I still feel like I'm on a rollercoaster," Ellis said of following the A&M loss with the biggest win of the season. Brown became the Gamecocks' third starting passer this season and the FCS transfer made his first Southeastern Conference start an eye-opening one. "He's always prepared himself for the moment," Gamecocks' receiver Josh Vann said. - South Carolina/AP College Football

  10/25/21 - Zeb NolandrSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-2, 232 (DS#999 QB) + More +

South Carolina's graduate assistant coach turned quarterback Zeb Noland will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. The team said in a statement Noland would have the procedure Tuesday and be available for the Gamecocks' next contest against Florida on Nov. 6. South Carolina (4-4, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) is off this week. Noland turned in his whistle for a spot on the roster in August when starting quarterback Luke Doty sustained a foot injury. Noland started the first three games before Doty took in the middle of South Carolina's 40-13 loss at Georgia. Doty started the next four games until he re-injured his foot and Noland entered on the final drive to lead a game-winning TD drive in a 21-20 win over Vanderbilt. Doty had season-ending surgery on his foot last week. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer has said Noland will be the starting quarterback going forward. Noland has completed 39 of 67 passes for 512 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. - AP College Football

  10/18/21 - Luke DotyrSr/2026, South Carolina, 6-1, 215 (DS#999 WR) + More +

South Carolina starting quarterback Luke Doty needs surgery on his injured foot and will miss the rest of the season. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday Doty would have the operation later this week and would not return until spring practice. Beamer said former graduate assistant coach Zeb Noland would start for South Carolina (4-3, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) this week at No. 17 Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2) on Saturday night. Doty is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound sophomore who missed the first two games this season due to the injury when someone stepped on his foot at practice in August. Doty came in for an injured Noland at No. 1 Georgia in week three, then started the next four games. With South Carolina trailing 20-14, Noland subbed in for Doty on the final drive and led a 75-yard touchdown drive in the Gamecocks 21-20 victory Saturday night. - AP College Football

  10/17/21 - Zeb NolandrSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-2, 232 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Zeb Noland's played more than enough football to be ready when called on and cherish the moments of success. The former graduate assistant did both to rally South Carolina to its first Southeastern Conference win in more than year. Noland entered on the Gamecocks' final drive and led a 75-yard touchdown drive, connecting with Xavier Legette on a 9-yard scoring pass with 37 seconds left for a 21-20 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday night. "It's surreal," the 24-year-old Noland said. "I told you guys, I thought I'd never put on the pads again. I wasn't sure I'd ever get this opportunity again." But there was Noland, calm and confident, leading South Carolina (4-3, 1-3 SEC) to snap its nine-game losing streak against conference opponents. "Shout out to Zeb. He's a GOAT," tight end Jaheim Bell said. "He stepped up big time." Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Noland came in when Luke Doty was feeling some soreness in a foot injury he sustained this summer at practice.

Noland started the first three games before Doty took over in the middle of a 40-13 loss to Georgia last month. Noland hadn't played since then. Noland's message in the huddle was simple: "Keep me clean. I got you. That's what I said, and let's roll." Noland got the Gamecocks rolling with a 29-yard pass to tight end Nick Muse to get into Vanderbilt territory. He had completions of 15 yards to Josh Vann and 21 yards to Dakereon Joyner to the Commodores' 9. On Noland's winning throw, Legette ran to the back of the end zone and got open for the winning score. - South Carolina/AP College Football

Dante Miller rushed for a career-high 187 yards on 16 carries, including a 75-yard touchdown, and Columbia beat Pennsylvania 23-14 on Saturday for the 400th victory in program history. Most of the offense came at the end of the second quarter with each team scoring two touchdowns in the final 4:10 of the first half. Wills Meyer had his first career touchdown on a catch-and-run of 41 yards for a 17-7 Columbia lead. Joe Green passed for 182 yards and a score for Columbia (4-1, 1-1 Ivy League). Scott Valentas led the defense with 12 tackles and Paul Akere had two tackles for loss and a sack. Alex Felkins capped a six-play, 49-yard drive on a 20-yard field goal with 2:53 remaining in the fourth for a two-possession lead. John Quinnelly completed just 6-of-25 passes for 83 yards for Pennsylvania (2-3, 0-2). Isaiah Malcome rushed for 83 yards and a score on 13 carries. - AP College Football

Spencer Rattler was the man heading into the season. Now he might not even be the starter. The Oklahoma quarterback had everything going for himself two months ago. He was a preseason Associated Press first-team All-American who was at the forefront of Heisman Trophy conversations. He was among the most visible players taking advantage of NCAA rules changes that now allow athletes to cash in on their celebrity. Caleb Williams replaced him last Saturday and rallied the Sooners to a 55-48 win over Texas. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley wouldn't say how he will play his quarterbacks heading into the fourth-ranked Sooners' game against TCU (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) on Saturday.

He said he's not a fan of two-quarterback systems, but wouldn't rule anything out that he thought would help the team. "I don't plan on naming a starting quarterback this week," Riley said. "We'll see how the week plays out and we'll see where we are when we get to Saturday. The guys have done well. They practiced well today. We'll see how it goes. We'll see Saturday at 6:30." Oklahoma is handling the situation delicately. Rattler normally talks with reporters on Wednesday, but Oklahoma (6-0, 3-0) canceled its weekly Zoom sessions. - AP College Football

  10/03/21 - Parker WhiterSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-4, 207 (DS#5 K) + More +

South Carolina's offensive consternation still isn't cured. The Gamecocks have scored one rushing touchdown in five games. But as long as the Gamecocks' defense can pick up the slack, as they did with their third touchdown of the year against Troy, they can continue to work on it without feeling too bad. David Spaulding returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown, Parker White kicked three field goals and South Carolina overcame several mistakes in the second half to hold off the Trojans 23-14 on Saturday.

White booted a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with just over two minutes left to make it a two-possession lead and Damani Staley intercepted Taylor Powell with less than 30 seconds to play. "I don't know about you guys, I feel like I aged about 40 years during that game," said South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, who saw his Gamecocks score one defensive TD and should have scored another. "We talk about playing smart football. We didn't do a great job of that today." The Gamecocks (3-2) led 17-7 at halftime after Spaulding's return. Yet the Trojans (2-3) wouldn't go away and South Carolina's inability to take advantage of its numerous chances to score helped Troy stay in it. - South Carolina/AP College Football

Spencer Rattler threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, Oklahoma had two crucial calls overturned in its favor after video reviews, and the sixth-ranked Sooners recovered an onside kick with just over a minute left to hold off Kansas State 37-31 on Saturday. Kennedy Brooks added 91 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Jeremiah Hall reached the end zone twice, as the Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) overcame a slew of penalties on their offensive line to beat the Wildcats for the first time in three tries. Skylar Thompson returned from a knee injury to throw for 320 yards and three scores for the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2). Deuce Vaughn had 51 yards rushing to go with 10 catches for 104 yards and a score, and Malik Knowles returned a kick 93 yards for a touchdown with 1:20 remaining for the final margin.

Earlier in the second half, the Sooners twice had to sweat out video reviews. The first came when Kansas State recovered an onside kick trailing 27-10 in the third quarter, and referee Kevin Hassell went to confirm the ball traveled 10 yards. It did, but the Sooners challenged the play again, contending kicker Ty Zentner had accidentally kicked the ball twice - which he also did. The illegal touching gave Oklahoma the ball. The second review came after the Wildcats got the ball back trailing 27-17 in the fourth. Landry Weber was ruled to have caught a pass converting fourth down, but the ball had clearly hit the ground and another play was overturned. Hall scored his second TD on a shovel pass a few minutes later to help Oklahoma put away the game. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

  09/22/21 - Luke DotyrSr/2026, South Carolina, 6-1, 215 (DS#999 WR) + More +

South Carolina sophomore Luke Doty will get his first start of the season at quarterback. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday that Doty would get the call at home against Kentucky on Saturday night. Doty hurt his foot in practice last month and missed the first two games of the season. However, he entered early in a 40-13 loss at No. 2 Georgia when starter Zeb Noland was hurt. Beamer said Doty had no lingering effects from the injury. Doty was on track to start for South Carolina (2-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) before his injury. Noland is the one-time graduate assistant who joined the team when Doty got hurt this summer. Noland started the first three games of the season, but left early against Georgia when his hand got stepped on. Beamer expected Noland would also be ready to go against Kentucky (3-0, 1-0) if called on. - AP College Football

Spencer Rattler passed for a touchdown and ran for another, and No. 3 Oklahoma held on to beat Nebraska 23-16 on Saturday. Celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the "Game of the Century" - No. 1 Nebraska's 35-31 win over No. 2 Oklahoma in 1971, the teams rewarded their nostalgic fans with a competitive contest. In the first meeting between the former conference rivals since 2010, Nebraska got the ball trailing by a touchdown with 57 seconds remaining and no timeouts. The Cornhuskers could not manage a first down. Eric Gray ran for 84 yards on 15 carries and Kennedy Brooks added 75 yards on 14 attempts for the Sooners (3-0). Adrian Martinez passed for 289 yards and a touchdown for Nebraska (2-2), which was seeking its first win over a ranked team since 2015. - Oklahoma Football/AP College Football

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler and his teammates felt the pressure after barely beating Tulane in the season opener. The Sooners stewed for a week, then took out their frustration on Western Carolina. Rattler threw five touchdown passes, and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past the Catamounts 76-0 on Saturday night. "When we got in the facility on Monday, even on Sunday, the vibe was uncomfortable," Rattler said. "We knew what we had to do. We were challenged this past week and came out here today and executed our plays, went through the reads, played hard for four quarters. And that was our big thing - four quarters and finish. We did well with that." Oklahoma matched its fifth-highest point total in school history and posted its highest score since 2007. It was the program's third-largest margin of victory, behind 77-0 wins over Missouri in 1986 and Texas A&M in 2003.

The Sooners led 62-0 after three quarters, and the fourth quarter was shortened to 12 minutes. Rattler completed 20 of 26 passes for 243 yards before resting in the second half of Oklahoma's 10th straight victory. He joined Jason White as the only Sooners to pass for five touchdowns in a half. He threw two interceptions against Tulane, but took a step forward on Saturday. "I think he was just more patient," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "Really, just a mindset to just go execute and really never got off of that, and that's what the best ones do. They can get in that kind of high level of focus and be able to maintain it, and he was much better there today." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

  09/11/21 - Parker WhiterSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-4, 207 (DS#5 K) + More +

The turnovers and penalties kept coming to put South Carolina in a 14-point hole. An aggressive defense, a stick-with-it running game and a clutch kick kept the Gamecocks from stumbling. Parker White knocked through a 36-yard field goal as time expired as South Carolina rallied to beat East Carolina 20-17 on Saturday, earning its first road win under first-year coach Shane Beamer. Damani Staley had a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime to give the Gamecocks a needed spark after trailing 14-0 in a mistake-filled opening half. Former graduate assistant Zeb Noland also had a game-tying touchdown pass to Dakereon Joyner in the back of the end zone late in the third quarter.

It was the perfect outcome for Beamer: resilient enough for a win, with plenty of obvious deficiencies to improve. "I just told the team in there I don't think I've ever been more proud of a football team than that group right there," Beamer said, adding: "Having said that, we've got to get a whole lot better." In the end, the Gamecocks (2-0) did enough to give themselves a shot, then rode the legs of Juju McDowell – who gained 45 yards on six carries on South Carolina's final 10-play drive – to set up White's winner that had the Gamecocks spilling onto the field from the sideline to celebrate. - South Carolina/AP College Football

  09/07/21 - *Kevin HarrisJr/2022, South Carolina, 5-10, 222 (DS#41 RB) + More +

Kevin Harris is finally healthy enough to play college football again after his breakthrough season as one of the Southeastern Conference's top rushers. Harris finished with 1,138 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, leading the SEC with 113.8 yards a game last season. His touchdowns were second only in the league to Alabama's Najee Harris. The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Gamecock was eager to keep that going this year. However, back surgery to correct what he and South Carolina coach Shane Beamer called a "minor procedure" led Harris to miss all of spring camp and much of the summer. Harris will play for the Gamecocks (1-0) at East Carolina (0-1) on Saturday.

The tailback "looked good out there" for Tuesday's practice, Beamer said. "He'll help. It's another back in the room." Harris was much more than just another back in the room last season; he was the brightest spot in an offense that was 10th in the SEC in both total yards and points. He had five games with 100 yards or more last season, incuding a season high 243 against Mississippi and 210 against Kentucky. Harris became only the third South Carolina runner — Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and Marcus Lattimore are the others — with multiple 200-yard rushing games. "I'm feeling pretty good," said Harris, who usually keeps his comments brief. "I want to do better than I did last year." - AP College Football
