Shane Beamer's rebuilding project just shot into the stratosphere. Already aiming at a significant National Signing Day on Dec. 15, South Carolina was rocket-propelled into the recruiting spotlight two days prior. Spencer Rattler, the former top-ranked quarterback prospect in his class, 2020 National Freshman of the Year at Oklahoma and Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Year, announced on Dec. 13 that he will transfer to USC.

Rattler lost his starting job to freshman Caleb Williams this season after throwing five interceptions to 11 touchdowns and presiding over a stagnant offense. Even with a coaching change - Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was hired to replace Lincoln Riley, who left Oklahoma for Southern Cal - the days were being counted from when Rattler lost his spot to when he would pick a new school. Beamer, who came from Oklahoma to USC before the 2021 season, clearly knew Rattler, but the Gamecocks were considered a longshot to land him. It seemed logical that Rattler would return closer to his Phoenix hometown. - The Post and Courier
