South Alabama recently added its 11th Division I football transfer for 2021, former Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive back Shawn Steele. Steele played four years for the Golden Lions, and will have one season of eligibility with the Jaguars due to a blanket waiver passed by the NCAA amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced he was committed to South Alabama on June 25. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Steele was UAPB's third-leading tackler during the 2021, season totaling 28 stops along with four pass breakups and an interception. The Golden Lions played just five games after their season was moved to the spring due to COVID, finishing 4-1 and losing to Alabama A&M in the SWAC championship game. An Arlington, Texas, native, Steele totaled 180 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 23 pass breakups and six interceptions during his career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He has played primarily cornerback during his college career, but could also add depth for South Alabama at safety. - Birmingham News

South Alabama added its third former SEC skill-position player of the offseason on Saturday. Former Mississippi State running back Kareem Walker announced he will play his final college season with the Jaguars. Walker (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) appeared in two games the last two seasons with the Bulldogs after a year in junior college and two years at Michigan. Originally from Irvington, N.J., Walker was a three-star recruit in Michigan's 2016 signing class. He redshirted as a true freshman, then rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in five games for the Wolverines in 2017.

Walker spent the 2018 season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, rushing for 207 yards and a touchdown in seven games. He sat out the 2019 season at Mississippi State for academic reasons, then played in two games (with no carries) last season before leaving the team and entering the NCAA transfer portal in early November. Walker has already graduated from Mississippi State, so he will be immediately eligible at South Alabama even though he is a second-time transfer. - Birmingham News

The 6-foot-6, 314-pound Baker played in 19 games for the Redhawks the last two seasons, starting 14 at left tackle.   One way or another, Kawaan Baker was going to wind up with the New Orleans Saints. The former South Alabama wide receiver was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft on Saturday night, going with the No. 255 overall pick. Had he not been drafted, he was planning on signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent. "I was on the phone with them, getting a contract over and everything," Baker said. "They put in a call again, and (Saints head coach) Sean Payton was on the phone saying he's got some good news. From there, it was up." The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Baker was a three-year starter at South Alabama, finishing his career with 126 receptions for 1,829 yards and 16 touchdowns. His yardage total is a program record, while the receptions rank second and touchdowns tied for first.

He is just the second South Alabama player drafted by an NFL team in the program's 12-year history, and the first in four years. Tight end Gerald Everett was chosen by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round (No. 44 overall) in 2017. "I am very aware of that," Baker said. "For the Saints to give me the opportunity, it's a blessing. I'm just going to give it up to God and make the most of it." - Birmingham News

A former Michigan State football offensive lineman doesn't have far to go for his next stop. Justin Stevens announced Friday via Twitter he is transferring to Central Michigan. The redshirt freshman entered the NCAA transfer portal shortly after last Saturday's final spring practice, for which he was not in uniform. "Nothing has ever been more clear to me," Stevens wrote. "I will be attending Central Michigan University for the next four years, trying to achieve my goal of playing in the NFL." The 6-foot-6, 295-pound native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, opted out of his true freshman season in the fall due to concerns about COVID-19. "This has been an extremely hard decision but due to the certain circumstances and with the main focus being my health having a respiratory condition," Stevens wrote in August when he opted out. Stevens was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports.com's composite rankings in 2020, Mark Dantonio's final recruiting class. - Lansing State Journal
