South Alabama recently added its 11th Division I football transfer for 2021, former Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive back Shawn Steele. Steele played four years for the Golden Lions, and will have one season of eligibility with the Jaguars due to a blanket waiver passed by the NCAA amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced he was committed to South Alabama on June 25. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Steele was UAPB's third-leading tackler during the 2021, season totaling 28 stops along with four pass breakups and an interception. The Golden Lions played just five games after their season was moved to the spring due to COVID, finishing 4-1 and losing to Alabama A&M in the SWAC championship game. An Arlington, Texas, native, Steele totaled 180 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 23 pass breakups and six interceptions during his career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He has played primarily cornerback during his college career, but could also add depth for South Alabama at safety. - Birmingham News
