Kareem Walker, South Alabama, Player News

Kareem Walker ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns and South Alabama rallied and then held off Alcorn State for 28-21 win on Saturday. Tre Young intercepted the Braves' Felix Harper in the end zone with 1:55 left to preserve the lead. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Jaguars (3-0) tied it at 14-all on Walker's 13-yard run with 12:12 to left in the third quarter before taking the lead for good on his 35-yard scoring run not even two minutes later. South Alabama made 28-14 when Bryan Hill ran it from 11 yards to end a 10-play, 71-yard drive that lasted five minutes. Harper threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Juan Anthony Jr. to reduce the deficit to seven. He finished with 265 yards passing and CJ Bolar caught five passes for 128 yards. - South Alabama/AP College Football

South Alabama looks reasonably well-set at quarterback with Utah transfer Jake Bentley and at wide receiver, with Jalen Tolbert leading a deep and talented group. It's a different situation at running back, where Carlos Davis - the Jaguars' leading rusher in 2020 - is off the team following an offseason arrest. None of the four remaining backs - AJ Phillips, Terrion Avery, Jared Wilson and Tank Miller - looked particularly explosive during the spring. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Walker, a former highly-touted Michigan recruit who barely saw the field at Mississippi State last season, could give South Alabama the type of power back it hasn't had in recent memory. - Birmingham News

South Alabama added its third former SEC skill-position player of the offseason on Saturday. Former Mississippi State running back Kareem Walker announced he will play his final college season with the Jaguars. Walker (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) appeared in two games the last two seasons with the Bulldogs after a year in junior college and two years at Michigan. Originally from Irvington, N.J., Walker was a three-star recruit in Michigan's 2016 signing class. He redshirted as a true freshman, then rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in five games for the Wolverines in 2017.

Walker spent the 2018 season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, rushing for 207 yards and a touchdown in seven games. He sat out the 2019 season at Mississippi State for academic reasons, then played in two games (with no carries) last season before leaving the team and entering the NCAA transfer portal in early November. Walker has already graduated from Mississippi State, so he will be immediately eligible at South Alabama even though he is a second-time transfer. - Birmingham News
