Derek Kyler passed for two touchdowns, Jared Gerbino ran for two scores and Dartmouth beat Columbia 59-24 on Friday night to stay undefeated on the season. The Big Green (6-0, 3-0 Ivy League) scored 42 straight points after the Lions (2-4, 1-2) tied it at 10 early in the second quarter. Gerbino's first TD run gave Dartmouth the lead for good with 6:44 left in the second quarter and his second TD run made it 52-10 with 8:07 left in the third. Columbia scored back-to-back touchdowns to cut the deficit to 52-24 before the end of the third, but Noah Roper's 8-yard TD run capped the scoring with 1:14 left in the game. Hunter Hagdorn had four catches for 89 yards and a touchdown for the Big Green. Mike Roussos had seven catches for 82 yards for the Lions. - AP College Football

Oregon State and Pittsburgh each recorded nine sacks, increasing to 16 the number of FBS games in which a team has taken down the quarterback at least eight times. Last year there were seven eight-plus sack games the entire season. The Beavers' nine sacks against California were their most since at least 2001. Pitt had its most sacks since recording nine against Temple in 2001. The Panthers' 36 sacks lead the nation. - AP College Football

  10/18/19 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Kenny Pickett threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, one of them coming on a trick play to put Pittsburgh ahead for good, and the Panthers held off Syracuse 27-20 on Friday night for their fourth straight win. Pittsburgh (5-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had won its previous three, by a combined seven points, and two of those victories came in the final minute. This one was different until the end, with the Panthers gaining a 24-6 halftime lead and keeping the Orange at bay despite a tense final 2 minutes.

Clayton Welch hit Aaron Hackett for a 7-yard touchdown with 2:44 left to move the Orange within striking distance, and the Panthers averted a meltdown after Vincent Davis lost a fumble but was ruled down with under 2 minutes left deep in his own territory. Syracuse (3-4, 0-3), which had lost only once in their previous nine games in the Carrier Dome, is the only team in the ACC's Atlantic Division without a conference win. Pitt, which has won 15 of the past 18 games in the series, converted six of 10 third downs in the first half, the defense registered six sacks, and that trick play sent the Panthers on the way to victory. The Panthers entered the game ranked second in the nation in sacks with an average of 4.50 per game (27) and finished with nine, the most in a game since 2001. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  10/06/19 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Kenny Pickett threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to V'Lique Carter with 38 seconds remaining, and Pittsburgh rallied to beat Duke 33-30 on Saturday night after wasting a 23-point lead. Pickett finished 29 of 48 for 268 yards with three touchdown passes to help the Panthers (4-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) claim a wild victory - their fifth straight in this Coastal Division series - after the teams combined for 10 total turnovers with each scoring TDs in the final 90 seconds.

Pitt led 26-3 with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter, only to have the Blue Devils turn three straight turnovers into touchdowns and then take a 30-26 lead on Quentin Harris' 44-yard touchdown pass to Deon Jackson with 1:30 remaining. Pickett needed just four plays to put the Panthers back in front. He found Carter over the middle and the Pitt running back got past defensive back Marquis Waters with a spin move on his way to the end zone. Patrick Jones II then sacked Harris on the third play of Duke's next drive, jarring the ball loose, and Phil Campbell III recovered it with 22 seconds to play. Harris finished 18 of 43 for 165 yards with two rushing touchdowns for the Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1). But he had five of Duke's six turnovers - two interceptions and a fumble during a four-play span of the first quarter, plus a third-quarter fumble in addition to the game-sealer. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  09/21/19 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Mark Whipple installed the play he dubbed "Pitt Special" during the second week of training camp. Whipple had his first-stringers run it once against the starting defense and it worked. So he made sure the Panthers practiced it during Thursday walkthroughs and tucked it in his back pocket just in case. Just in case arrived late Saturday afternoon with Pitt trailing 15th-ranked UCF by six and a minute to go. Facing fourth-and-2 at the UCF 3, an official came over and told Whipple the Panthers could still get a first down if they got to the 1. "Nah, we're going to score," Whipple said. In way that could prove to be the turning point in Pitt's season. UCF's, too.

Running back A.J. Davis took a direct snap from center, ran to his left and flipped the ball to Aaron Mathews, who was heading right. Matthews, a former high school quarterback, thought he might have to make a run at the pylon. When two UCF defenders closed in, Mathews pulled up and found quarterback Kenny Pickett in the end zone, giving the Panthers a euphoric 35-34 victory. "Kenny claims he has the best hands on the team," Mathews said with a smile. "He's one for one." One very big one. On a day Pickett threw for 224 yards and a score and added 61 on the ground despite exiting for a couple of series late in the third quarter after bruising his right (throwing) shoulder, his heady decision to find a spot in the UCF zone defense and wait for the ball ended UCF's 25-game regular-season winning streak. UCF had won 27 of its last 28 overall, including the Knights' American Athletic Conference championship game victories the last two years along with their Fiesta Bowl loss to LSU last year. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  09/07/19 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett deleted most of his social media accounts before the season as a way to help him stay focused amid all the noise. So he didn't know and didn't particularly care about the reaction to his uneven performance in an opening loss to Virginia. Instead, Pickett kept doing what he's done since the moment he arrived on campus more than 2½ years ago: he kept grinding, confident the protection issues in front of him and the accuracy issues that plagued him against the Cavaliers would work themselves out. For the most part in an orderly 20-10 win over Ohio on Saturday, they did.

Working behind a line that appeared to improve by the snap, Pickett passed for a career-high 321 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown to Maurice Ffrench that gave Pitt (1-1) an early 10-point lead it never came close to squandering. A week after hitting on barely half of his 41 attempts while getting sacked four times, Pickett hit on 26 of 37 passes and was taken down just once. "I just think we executed better all around, not just me," Pickett said. "The offensive line blocked great. Receivers got open. Everything was just clicking." Ffrench finished with 10 receptions for 138 yards, both career bests. A.J. Davis ran for 89 yards for Pitt and Vincent Davis added 50 on the ground, including his first career touchdown that put the Panthers up 17-0 midway through the second quarter. - AP College Football

  08/09/19 - Rashad WeaverrSr/2021, Pittsburgh, 6-4, 259 (DS#13 DE) + More +

Pitt junior defensive end Rashad Weaver, who led the team in sacks last year, suffered an ACL tear of his right knee in practice Thursday and is lost for the season. "This is one of those ones (injuries) that makes you sick to your stomach as a coach," coach Pat Narduzzi said Friday morning. Narduzzi said Weaver will need surgery to repair his knee.

Weaver started all 14 games last season, recording 6 1/2 sacks. He also led the team in tackles for loss (14) and fumble recoveries (three). He played as a a freshman in 2017, finishing with three sacks in 12 games (five starts). "Something you never want to see happen," Narduzzi said. "We're going to miss Rashad dearly and I feel bad for him. It's not easy to sit with the doctor and hear that news come out and then go break it to him. One of the ugliest days you can have." - The Tribune-Review
