With Ben Gulbranson making his second career start at quarterback for Oregon State on Saturday night, the Beavers relied heavily on their running game and defense in a 24-10 victory over Washington State. Good strategy. Oregon State (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12 Conference) rushed for 203 yards and Jack Colletto ran for two short touchdowns in handing Washington State (4-3, 1-3) its third loss in four games. The Cougars relied almost exclusively on the arm of quarterback Cameron Ward, who threw 54 passes in the game. A 50-yard run off left tackle by Damien Martinez to the 4-yard line late in the third quarter set up Colletto's 2-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Beavers a 24-10 lead.

Trailing by 14 points with six minutes remaining, Ward was forced out of the pocket on fourth-and-8 from the Cougars' 37-yard line and his desperation heave fell incomplete. Oregon State missed a 31-yard field goal with about three minutes left that would have made it a three-score game, but the Beavers defense sealed the win. The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter Gulbranson rolled to his left and threw into the end zone to wide receiver Anthony Gould, who leaped high in the air and came down with a 17-yard touchdown catch, increasing the Beavers' lead to 17-3. Back came the Cougars. Ward completed five of six passes on an 80-yard touchdown drive, culminated by a 9-yard touchdown toss to running back Jaylen Jenkins that cut the Beavers' lead to 17-10 at 4:15 of the third quarter. The Cougars didn't score again. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Ben Gulbranson threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison with 13 seconds remaining and Oregon State overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Stanford 28-27 on Saturday night. The Cardinal (1-4, 0-4 Pac-12) appeared to be in control of the game when they took a 24-10 lead into the fourth quarter with the Oregon State (4-2, 1-2) using a backup quarterback. Instead, they collapsed down the stretch and lost their 11th straight game against an FBS opponent. Gulbranson threw a 21-yard TD pass on fourth down to Silas Bolden on the second play of the fourth quarter to start the comeback.

Damien Martinez added a 43-yard touchdown run to make it 24-22 but the Beavers missed both 2-point tries to keep Stanford in the lead. The Cardinal nearly out the clock before settling for a 46-yard field goal with 58 seconds left. But Gulbranson needed only three plays to go 76 yards for the win. After two short completions, he took a shot down the sideline for Harrison, who leaped over Ethan Bonner for the catch. Patrick Fields appeared in position to make the tackle but Harrison got by him for the score. Gulbranson finished 20 for 28 for 250 yards and two TDs in his first collegiate start in place of the injured Chance Nolan. Tanner McKee threw two long touchdown passes to Brycen Tremayne but it wasn't enough for the Cardinal, who haven't beaten an FBS team since topping Oregon on Oct. 2, 2021. Stanford set a school record with its 10th straight conference loss. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Jack Colletto scored on a 2-yard run on the final play of the game and Oregon State rallied for a 35-32 victory over Fresno State on Saturday night. The Beavers (2-0) initially appeared ready to go for a game-tying field goal before coach Jonathan Smith opted to gamble for the win following a timeout by Fresno State (1-1). That proved to be the right call as Colletto took the direct snap and ran it in for the score that gave the Beavers their first 2-0 start since 2014. It capped a wild final stretch of the game that featured three lead changes in the final 1:50. Chance Nolan threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison with 1:50 remaining to put Oregon State ahead 29-26 on the 2-point conversion.

Jake Haener needed just 45 seconds to answer, completing a 45-yard pass to Jalen Moreno-Cropper that set up the go-ahead 4-yard score to Erik Brooks with 1:05 to play. Abraham Montano missed the extra point and the Beavers had a chance to tie it with a field goal or win it with a TD. A 28-yard pass from Nolan to Luke Musgrave got the ball to the 14 and then a pass interference call set up the final decision for Smith and the game-winning score. Nolan finished 14 for 27 for 219 yards and a TD. Colletto ran for two scores and Silas Bolden and Deshaun Fenwick also had TD runs for Oregon State. Jordan Mims ran for 122 yards and two scores, and Haener threw for 360 yards for the Bulldogs, who were seeking their first 2-0 start since 2013. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Kitan Oladapo has been one of the standouts of fall camp for the Oregon State football team. The 6-foot-1 defensive back from Happy Valley said having a full season under his belt has helped him better understand his role within defensive coordinator Trent Bray's system. Oladapo also had a productive offseason tightening up some areas of his game. "Taking coaching points, watching film from last year, working on the small mistakes I made, whether it's breaks, eyes, just watching film and seeing what I can improve on," Oladapo said.

Improving his coverage skills was a primary goal and his progress in that area has been evident throughout fall camp. The team has emphasized proper technique in pass coverage, using different drills which take away defenders' ability to hold and demand good positioning. On Thursday, defensive backs wore boxing gloves for part of practice. Oladapo said Bray's system, which reduces complexity in favor of freeing players to make quick decisions and play aggressively, has been a positive change. "We've shrunk down our play calls a little bit, but we're sticking to the fundamentals, really getting down those play calls that we have. I think that is good," Oladapo said. - Gazette Times

Calvin Hart Jr. played roughly 31/2 quarters in his debut season at Illinois before suffering what would be a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter of the Illini's season-opening win against Nebraska. But what a 31/2 quarters it was for the former North Carolina State product. Hart finished his one and only game so far in orange and blue with six tackles, 11/2 tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Simple math says he would have put up roughly 82 tackles and 201/2 tackles for loss in a full season and scored a dozen touchdowns. (OK, maybe not, but it was an impressive single game).

That Hart was able to return this spring healthy after knee surgery last fall was a good sign. That speedy recovery, and the fact he's full go for the Aug. 27 opener against Wyoming, is important. There's some intriguing depth at inside linebacker, but not all that much experience. Before the youth movement hits, Illinois will have to rely on Hart as one of three inside 'backers - Tarique Barnes and Isaac Darkangelo the other - to anchor the middle of coordinator Ryan Walters' defense. - News Gazette Tribune

Freshman Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Troy Omeire returned to the practice field healthy this week. Both players dealt with injuries throughout spring ball. Coach Steve Sarkisian is more than excited to get Murphy and Omeire back on the field. Murphy is entering his first fall camp as a member of the Longhorns. He was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class with eye-catching arm talent. Murphy fell behind in the quarterback battle after being limited in spring practice with an ankle injury. The return of Omeire is long awaited news for Texas faithful. He was all the talk of the 2020 preseason before injuries stuck and kept him on the sidelines for the last two years. - Austin American Statesman
