Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz shared Tuesday that versatile linebacker Jestin Jacobs won't play this week after suffering a leg injury vs. South Dakota State. While linebacker is a deep position for the Hawkeyes, that's a major blow to take a future NFL draft pick off their defense. Iowa will likely play a lot of 4-2-5 defense against the Cyclones — putting Cooper DeJean at cash and Terry Roberts and Riley Moss at corners - while dispatching Campbell and Seth Benson as the linebackers. Iowa is "doubtful," per Ferentz, to get cornerback Jermari Harris back from injury this week.

Also out for a few weeks is backup defensive tackle Yahya Black, who suffered a foot injury in the opener. That's a big depth blow, because Noah Shannon and Logan Lee (as dynamic as they were Saturday) cannot take every snap as undersized defensive tackles. Ferentz did say this will escalate true freshman Aaron Graves into the plans, along with walk-on Louie Stec. Surprisingly, Graves did not play in the opener despite a stellar fall camp. Perhaps Iowa will slide Lukas Van Ness inside for some snaps to shore things up at tackle. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 9. Noah Sewell, rSo, ILB, Oregon, 6-2, 253,...Considered the best inside linebacker in the nation and a wrecking ball on defense, Sewell collected only two tackles with one assist in Oregon's embarrassing, 49-3, loss to Georgia. The Ducks seemed to be totally manhandled and it may take some film study to see if Sewell salvaged any self-respect in this one. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Indiana's offensive line, which struggled for long stretches of Friday's 23-20 season-opening win against Illinois, will now have to replace one of its steadiest veterans for the rest of the season. Matthew Bedford, a mainstay since his freshman season in 2019 who started at right tackle Friday, tore his ACL in the first half against Illinois and will be out for the year. Three-plus seasons in Bloomington, Bedford had appeared in 29 games, 28 of them starts. He was a stalwart in 2019 and 2020, before being asked to move around more last season in an effort to strengthen a beleaguered line. - Indianapolis Star

Dillon Gabriel passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and No. 9 Oklahoma rolled past UTEP 45-13 on Saturday for Brent Venables' first career victory as a head coach. Venables was a full-time assistant for the previous 26 years in stints at Kansas State, Oklahoma and Clemson. He took over after Lincoln Riley left to take the Southern California job last December. Gabriel, a transfer from Central Florida, connected on 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards. Eric Gray rushed for 102 yards, Brayden Willis caught two touchdown passes and Marcus Major rushed for two scores for the Sooners.

Gavin Hardison passed for 244 yards, Tyrin Smith caught eight passes for 71 yards and Reynaldo Flores caught seven passes for 76 yards for the Miners (1-1). Oklahoma gained 301 yards in the first half to take a 28-10 lead. Gabriel passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns before the break. Reggie Grimes led the Oklahoma defense with 2 1/2 sacks in the first half, including one on the final play of the second quarter to snuff out a scoring threat. Oklahoma then held UTEP to 99 yards and three points in the second half. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 17. Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 114 tackles (53 solo), 4 sacks, 2 FF, 1 INT. Last year's ranking: NR. After a season of 114 tackles, four sacks two forced fumbles and a whole lot of changes at Oregon, Sewell is the mainstay the Ducks badly need. With Dan Lanning - a defensive-minded head coach - stepping into the fold, Sewell is bound to build on last season's success. Questions abound on the offensive side of the ball, so Oregon is going to need an encore from Sewell as the leader of the Ducks' defense to make some noise this season. The good news? He's plenty capable. - ESPN.com

Multiple short-term injuries and ailments along Oregon's offensive line allowed freshman Josh Conerly Jr. to practice with the first-team. It's a massive opportunity for the 6-foot-4, 294 pound Conerly. A former five-star recruit who joined the Ducks over the summer, it was going to be difficult to keep Conerly off the two-deep to start the season based on talent alone and it won't be at all surprising if he's listed as the backup left tackle on Oregon's depth chart for the season opener against Georgia. "I think Josh is going to be a really good player for the Ducks," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "I think he's going to be a phenomenal player for us; he's shown that. He has a worker's mentality, he has a growth mindset. When his time comes I think he'll be prepared for it and that could be relatively soon. We'll see." By working with the starting unit Conerly has gotten to face off with Oregon's top defensive linemen, which has meant multiple one-on-ones with Brandon Dorlus.

The fourth-year defensive end said the true freshman isn't beating him in any reps just yet, but was complimentary of how Conerly is carrying himself in his first fall camp. "Usually when you come in as a freshmen and you lose reps you get in your head and you stop working and it's over with," Dorlus said. "Him, he's lost plenty of reps but it's crazy because he's come back and he's worked on it. You can tell he's really trying to play this year as a young guy. It's tough to play left tackle as a freshman, especially in the Pac-12. Josh Conerly, he's a dog. He has a great work mentality and I love going against him; me and him go at it everyday." - The Oregonian

Much of the buzz around the USC receiving corps this summer has focused on the newcomers in the room. It's understandable; USC added Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison, Oklahoma transfer Mario Williams, a couple of Pac-12 transplants in Brenden Rice and Terrell Bynum, and Mater Dei standout C.J. Williams. Flying a little bit more under the radar, though, are Gary Bryant Jr. and Tahj Washington, two of USC's three top receivers a year ago. But even in a crowded competition, both are expected to contribute to the Trojans this season. "I've been excited with them," head coach Lincoln Riley said after practice Tuesday. "They both have very unique skill sets that certainly translate well to what we do offensively." Riley says he was familiar with Bryant and Washington when they came out of high school, and he watched them both a little last season.

As a sophomore, Bryant took advantage of an expanded role, catching 44 receptions for 579 yards and seven touchdowns, tying Drake London for the team lead. Washington had an immediate impact after transferring to USC from Washington, finishing second on the roster with 54 receptions and 602 yards. While they were primarily used as outside receivers in 2021, Riley wants to use the duo in different spots across the field to take advantage of their speed and shiftiness. "Just being held accountable in every position," Bryant said of the challenge. "Knowing every spot. Knowing that somebody can go down or you might be called up in certain situations." - Orange County Register

Patrick Herbert enters his fourth year at Oregon having barely had a chance to show what he can do, as injuries have sidelined the Ducks tight end each of the past two seasons. A former four-star prospect out of Sheldon High School in the class of 2019, Herbert has played in just one game, against Nevada as a true freshman, in his career. "It's a tough situation for sure," he said. "You don't wish it on anybody. But there's a plan for everything so I'm just going to keep working." During spring practice, Herbert and fellow tight end Cam McCormick were both limited due to knee and Achilles injuries, respectively.

They've both spent a lot of time in the training room over the past two years and have leaned on each other throughout their recoveries. "I try and help him as much as I can because he hasn't had a lot of injuries," McCormick said. "So give him my knowledge, provide him knowledge where I can, being there for him, letting him talk some things out. I'm there to listen and there to give him advice." They're both back on the field and have been full participants throughout fall camp for Oregon, which held its 16th preseason practice on Tuesday. Projecting how much either will be able to contribute for the Ducks this fall is difficult, though the coaches recognize their skills. "Pat, I think, it's scratching the surface on what he can be," tight ends coach Drew Mehringer said. "He gets better and better every single week as he continues to develop into his role. I think we're still trying to figure out what those guys can and cannot be. I think they're both going to help us a lot." - The Oregonian

Alabama football's cornerback injuries appear to be short term in nature. Khyree Jackson has been back practicing and took part in Saturday's scrimmage, coach Nick Saban said. Eli Ricks didn't participate in the scrimmage, but he was dressed in uniform and took part in warmups. Center Seth McLaughlin, who is in competition at center, also did not scrimmage Saturday, but Saban said "he will be back shortly." Jackson scrimmaged about two-thirds or three-quarters of the time, Saban estimated. Jackson, who has been dealing with a groin injury, was able to practice Thursday and Friday after he missed the first preseason scrimmage on Aug. 13. The scrimmage held at Bryant-Denny Stadium was closed to the general public and reporters. "He's making progress," Saban said. "I thought he did a nice job today when he was in there." Jackson is one of about four cornerbacks in competition for two starting spots. Jalyn Armour-Davis and Josh Jobe, last year's starters to begin the season , are both playing in the NFL. - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/22/22 - Bo NixrSr/2024, Oregon + More +

It's been an offseason of dramatic changes for Bo Nix. The former Auburn quarterback transferred to Oregon in January, spent the next several months getting acclimated to a new school and team while being over 2,500 miles away from home, family and his fiance. Nix got married in July, still managed to wedge some time in to work with private QB coaches and returned to Eugene with his wife, Izzy, to start their life together while he attempts to win the starting job during fall camp. "I think being married and having that part out of the way, it's no longer long distance," Nix said. "All that stuff can be a distraction. It's easier now. She's at home. She lives her life, I go live mine and when we get home we share our days and talk with each other. It's been good. She's great in this situation. She lets me have all the time I need with football, and that's a blessing. That's how I knew she was the one." Nix carries himself as a starting quarterback because that's who he has been for years, both at Auburn and in high school.

He's also doing that now while building relationships with new teammates and also being a husband, making time around practice and meetings to be at home. "I feel like the oldest guy, even though I'm not necessarily by age," he said. "People look at me because I'm already married, I've been through a lot, they assume that I'm a lot older, which is a good thing, because we have a lot of younger guys that haven't had that same experience. "But at the end of the day when you go out there and we have leadership like we have, especially up front on the offensive line, when you got Alex (Forsyth) and Ryan (Walk) and those guys that do their part and that carry that part of the line, it makes it kind of easy for a guy like me with similar experience to go out there and lead the other guys, lead the skill group. I take passion, take pride in it. It's fun to lead those guys and see those guys through to their potential and when their eyes light up and they figure something out for the first time it's a really good feeling." - The Oregonian

  08/22/22 - Mase FunarSr/2024, Oregon + More +

Mase Funa was not loving it in 2021. The Oregon Ducks strong-side linebacker had 28 tackles with one for loss, one fumble recovery and pass breakup in 12 games last season. It was a career-low in disruption in the backfield for Funa, who had 8.5 tackles for loss with four sacks as a true freshman in a backup role in 2019 and 31 tackles with 3.5 for loss over seven games in 2020. Foot and leg injuries played a role in his decline in production, but so too did his weight. At 245 pounds as a top 100 recruit in the class of 2019 and 260 pounds as a freshman, Funa was playing at a much higher weight than the 265 he was listed at last season.

Not surprisingly, his regular dinner order at McDonald's - two McDoubles, two McChickens, 20 chicken nuggets, large fries, large shake and large soda - packed on pounds. "That's pretty much why I was so big the last few years," Funa said. "I put down food. I'm Tongan, I got to eat." Funa cut down on fast food - way down. He said he trimmed down to between 235-240 pounds and that was too lean to still be effective on the edge. Now at 255 pounds, the fourth-year junior feels he's in the best shape of his career and poised to get back to being a disruptive force for the No. 11 Ducks this season. "Me and Mase have been in the same room for this is going on three years now," edge rusher Bradyn Swinson said. "Seeing Mase be from 290 all the way to 280 to see how his body transformed now, this is the best I've ever seen Mase's body. I'm really excited to see what Mase do because he's like a shape-shifter; one minute he can be 250, next minute he's 270 and next minute he's 280. It's amazing. Mase is going to do great things this year." - The Oregonian
