  08/29/22 - Josh Conerly Jr.Jr/2025, Oregon, 6-5, 311 (DS#3 OT) + More +

Multiple short-term injuries and ailments along Oregon's offensive line allowed freshman Josh Conerly Jr. to practice with the first-team. It's a massive opportunity for the 6-foot-4, 294 pound Conerly. A former five-star recruit who joined the Ducks over the summer, it was going to be difficult to keep Conerly off the two-deep to start the season based on talent alone and it won't be at all surprising if he's listed as the backup left tackle on Oregon's depth chart for the season opener against Georgia. "I think Josh is going to be a really good player for the Ducks," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "I think he's going to be a phenomenal player for us; he's shown that. He has a worker's mentality, he has a growth mindset. When his time comes I think he'll be prepared for it and that could be relatively soon. We'll see." By working with the starting unit Conerly has gotten to face off with Oregon's top defensive linemen, which has meant multiple one-on-ones with Brandon Dorlus.

The fourth-year defensive end said the true freshman isn't beating him in any reps just yet, but was complimentary of how Conerly is carrying himself in his first fall camp. "Usually when you come in as a freshmen and you lose reps you get in your head and you stop working and it's over with," Dorlus said. "Him, he's lost plenty of reps but it's crazy because he's come back and he's worked on it. You can tell he's really trying to play this year as a young guy. It's tough to play left tackle as a freshman, especially in the Pac-12. Josh Conerly, he's a dog. He has a great work mentality and I love going against him; me and him go at it everyday." - The Oregonian

  08/29/22 - Gary Bryant Jr.rSr/2026, Oregon, 5-11, 180 (DS#43 WR) + More +

Much of the buzz around the USC receiving corps this summer has focused on the newcomers in the room. It's understandable; USC added Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison, Oklahoma transfer Mario Williams, a couple of Pac-12 transplants in Brenden Rice and Terrell Bynum, and Mater Dei standout C.J. Williams. Flying a little bit more under the radar, though, are Gary Bryant Jr. and Tahj Washington, two of USC's three top receivers a year ago. But even in a crowded competition, both are expected to contribute to the Trojans this season. "I've been excited with them," head coach Lincoln Riley said after practice Tuesday. "They both have very unique skill sets that certainly translate well to what we do offensively." Riley says he was familiar with Bryant and Washington when they came out of high school, and he watched them both a little last season.

As a sophomore, Bryant took advantage of an expanded role, catching 44 receptions for 579 yards and seven touchdowns, tying Drake London for the team lead. Washington had an immediate impact after transferring to USC from Washington, finishing second on the roster with 54 receptions and 602 yards. While they were primarily used as outside receivers in 2021, Riley wants to use the duo in different spots across the field to take advantage of their speed and shiftiness. "Just being held accountable in every position," Bryant said of the challenge. "Knowing every spot. Knowing that somebody can go down or you might be called up in certain situations." - Orange County Register

  08/28/22 - Patrick HerbertrSr/2025, Oregon, 6-5, 249 (DS#35 TE) + More +

Patrick Herbert enters his fourth year at Oregon having barely had a chance to show what he can do, as injuries have sidelined the Ducks tight end each of the past two seasons. A former four-star prospect out of Sheldon High School in the class of 2019, Herbert has played in just one game, against Nevada as a true freshman, in his career. "It's a tough situation for sure," he said. "You don't wish it on anybody. But there's a plan for everything so I'm just going to keep working." During spring practice, Herbert and fellow tight end Cam McCormick were both limited due to knee and Achilles injuries, respectively.

They've both spent a lot of time in the training room over the past two years and have leaned on each other throughout their recoveries. "I try and help him as much as I can because he hasn't had a lot of injuries," McCormick said. "So give him my knowledge, provide him knowledge where I can, being there for him, letting him talk some things out. I'm there to listen and there to give him advice." They're both back on the field and have been full participants throughout fall camp for Oregon, which held its 16th preseason practice on Tuesday. Projecting how much either will be able to contribute for the Ducks this fall is difficult, though the coaches recognize their skills. "Pat, I think, it's scratching the surface on what he can be," tight ends coach Drew Mehringer said. "He gets better and better every single week as he continues to develop into his role. I think we're still trying to figure out what those guys can and cannot be. I think they're both going to help us a lot." - The Oregonian

  08/23/22 - Khyree JacksonrSr/2024, Oregon, 6-4, 194 (DS#12 CB) + More +

Alabama football's cornerback injuries appear to be short term in nature. Khyree Jackson has been back practicing and took part in Saturday's scrimmage, coach Nick Saban said. Eli Ricks didn't participate in the scrimmage, but he was dressed in uniform and took part in warmups. Center Seth McLaughlin, who is in competition at center, also did not scrimmage Saturday, but Saban said "he will be back shortly." Jackson scrimmaged about two-thirds or three-quarters of the time, Saban estimated. Jackson, who has been dealing with a groin injury, was able to practice Thursday and Friday after he missed the first preseason scrimmage on Aug. 13. The scrimmage held at Bryant-Denny Stadium was closed to the general public and reporters. "He's making progress," Saban said. "I thought he did a nice job today when he was in there." Jackson is one of about four cornerbacks in competition for two starting spots. Jalyn Armour-Davis and Josh Jobe, last year's starters to begin the season , are both playing in the NFL. - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/22/22 - Bo NixrSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 214 (DS#6 QB) + More +

It's been an offseason of dramatic changes for Bo Nix. The former Auburn quarterback transferred to Oregon in January, spent the next several months getting acclimated to a new school and team while being over 2,500 miles away from home, family and his fiance. Nix got married in July, still managed to wedge some time in to work with private QB coaches and returned to Eugene with his wife, Izzy, to start their life together while he attempts to win the starting job during fall camp. "I think being married and having that part out of the way, it's no longer long distance," Nix said. "All that stuff can be a distraction. It's easier now. She's at home. She lives her life, I go live mine and when we get home we share our days and talk with each other. It's been good. She's great in this situation. She lets me have all the time I need with football, and that's a blessing. That's how I knew she was the one." Nix carries himself as a starting quarterback because that's who he has been for years, both at Auburn and in high school.

He's also doing that now while building relationships with new teammates and also being a husband, making time around practice and meetings to be at home. "I feel like the oldest guy, even though I'm not necessarily by age," he said. "People look at me because I'm already married, I've been through a lot, they assume that I'm a lot older, which is a good thing, because we have a lot of younger guys that haven't had that same experience. "But at the end of the day when you go out there and we have leadership like we have, especially up front on the offensive line, when you got Alex (Forsyth) and Ryan (Walk) and those guys that do their part and that carry that part of the line, it makes it kind of easy for a guy like me with similar experience to go out there and lead the other guys, lead the skill group. I take passion, take pride in it. It's fun to lead those guys and see those guys through to their potential and when their eyes light up and they figure something out for the first time it's a really good feeling." - The Oregonian

  08/22/22 - Mase FunarSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 254 (DS#44 DE) + More +

Mase Funa was not loving it in 2021. The Oregon Ducks strong-side linebacker had 28 tackles with one for loss, one fumble recovery and pass breakup in 12 games last season. It was a career-low in disruption in the backfield for Funa, who had 8.5 tackles for loss with four sacks as a true freshman in a backup role in 2019 and 31 tackles with 3.5 for loss over seven games in 2020. Foot and leg injuries played a role in his decline in production, but so too did his weight. At 245 pounds as a top 100 recruit in the class of 2019 and 260 pounds as a freshman, Funa was playing at a much higher weight than the 265 he was listed at last season.

Not surprisingly, his regular dinner order at McDonald's - two McDoubles, two McChickens, 20 chicken nuggets, large fries, large shake and large soda - packed on pounds. "That's pretty much why I was so big the last few years," Funa said. "I put down food. I'm Tongan, I got to eat." Funa cut down on fast food - way down. He said he trimmed down to between 235-240 pounds and that was too lean to still be effective on the edge. Now at 255 pounds, the fourth-year junior feels he's in the best shape of his career and poised to get back to being a disruptive force for the No. 11 Ducks this season. "Me and Mase have been in the same room for this is going on three years now," edge rusher Bradyn Swinson said. "Seeing Mase be from 290 all the way to 280 to see how his body transformed now, this is the best I've ever seen Mase's body. I'm really excited to see what Mase do because he's like a shape-shifter; one minute he can be 250, next minute he's 270 and next minute he's 280. It's amazing. Mase is going to do great things this year." - The Oregonian

Another of the Aggies' five-star recruits, Stewart stole the show in the spring game with seven catches, then impressed coach Jimbo Fisher in the summer. "Every day in the offseason program he was out front leading everybody running and doing things, and he's been very productive in all the practices and scrimmages," Fisher said.   08/14/22 - Mase FunarSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 254 (DS#44 DE) + More +

Oregon Ducks football players are the latest to band together to form a collective that will pool name, image and likeness compensation related to an online community. The Eugene NIL Club launched Wednesday via YOKE, the same outlet that gained early adoption last year by college athletes looking to earn NIL compensation by playing fans in video games via its platform, with the goal of supporting at least 75 players. Donors to the collective can give any amount starting at $5 per month to participate in message boards and chat rooms, digital events with players and to watch player-generated content related to games and practices. For at least $25 per month, a member will receive a Justin Herbert Oregon jersey and for at least $100 per month a donor will be invited to a steak dinner with players this fall.

By midnight Wednesday, 182 members had pledged over $4,600 towards the club's monthly goal of $50,000. By comparison, the University of Pittsburgh launched the Steel City NIL Club on Wednesday and raised over $8,200 via 340 members. YOKE says it has an 18% "platform fee" associated with running the various team-related collectives, which also include similar operations at Arkansas, Auburn, Kansas State and Michigan State, among others. - The Oregonian

  08/11/22 - Nikko ReedrSr/2025, Oregon, 5-09, 183 (DS#36 CB) + More +

The leap from high school to college football isn't an easy one, as Nikko Reed found out a year ago. Entering his second season with the Colorado Buffaloes, Reed is much more comfortable. "I have been more locked in than I was last year," the true sophomore cornerback said after a recent practice. "I feel like camp was a bit of a struggle for me last year, but now that I've kind of gotten used to it, I'm locked in more." The struggle, Reed said, came from trying to learn the cornerback technique while going up against bigger and faster competition than he ever saw in high school.

Despite the struggle, Reed flashed his talent last season, playing 199 snaps and recording eight tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. He also had one kickoff return, taking it 100 yards for a touchdown in the finale against Utah. This year, the Buffs are counting on Reed to take the next step, as he's projected to be a starter. CU has very little experience in the secondary, so it is leaning on Reed and his 2021 recruiting classmates Kaylin Moore, Tyrin Taylor and Trevor Woods. "Nikko is having a great camp, Kaylin's having a really good camp and Tyrin," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "They're doing veteran things right now." - Daily Camera

The Oregon Ducks football team will open the 2022 season with the same ranking in the coaches poll as it had last year. The Ducks are No. 12 in the preseason poll released Monday with 734 points, second-highest among Pac-12 teams. Oregon, which finished 10-4 last season and lost in the Pac-12 Championship game and Alamo Bowl, will be ranked to start a season ranked for the 14th time in the 15 seasons. The Ducks are scheduled to play two other ranked teams: No. 3 Georgia and No. 8 Utah. No. 15 USC also was ranked from the Pac-12, while UCLA and Oregon State also received votes. - The Oregonian

  08/11/22 - Jadon CanadyrSr/2026, Oregon, 5-10, 175 (DS#999 CB) + More +

After excelling as a freshman nickelback last year, Tulane's Jadon Canady is preparing to start at cornerback this fall but still could log time at his old spot. Versatility is the buzzword as the coaches look for dramatic improvement from a secondary that played a significant role in the Green Wave finishing 115th in the nation in pass efficiency defense and 120th in yards allowed (271.2 per game). Canady, who intercepted Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler on the second play of his career, is one of several defensive backs training at more than one position. Macon Clark, a starter at free safety for all 12 games in 2021, is getting some time at nickelback along with Lance Robinson, who started the final three games at cornerback.

Standing pat was not an option after Tulane's disappointing season. "We're playing guys at multiple spots so we can get the best personnel on the field depending on the down and distance," second-year defensive coordinator Chris Hampton said. "We need better overall awareness. We are doing a lot of situational football (in practice), and the guys have really taken ownership." It starts with Canady, one of the few defensive pluses in the first half of last season before the unit improved down the stretch. His 54 tackles ranked fourth on the team, and he has added 20 pounds to get to 180 on his formerly slender frame. - New Orleans Times Picayune
