  08/22/22 - Bo NixrSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 214 (DS#6 QB) + More +

It's been an offseason of dramatic changes for Bo Nix. The former Auburn quarterback transferred to Oregon in January, spent the next several months getting acclimated to a new school and team while being over 2,500 miles away from home, family and his fiance. Nix got married in July, still managed to wedge some time in to work with private QB coaches and returned to Eugene with his wife, Izzy, to start their life together while he attempts to win the starting job during fall camp. "I think being married and having that part out of the way, it's no longer long distance," Nix said. "All that stuff can be a distraction. It's easier now. She's at home. She lives her life, I go live mine and when we get home we share our days and talk with each other. It's been good. She's great in this situation. She lets me have all the time I need with football, and that's a blessing. That's how I knew she was the one." Nix carries himself as a starting quarterback because that's who he has been for years, both at Auburn and in high school.

He's also doing that now while building relationships with new teammates and also being a husband, making time around practice and meetings to be at home. "I feel like the oldest guy, even though I'm not necessarily by age," he said. "People look at me because I'm already married, I've been through a lot, they assume that I'm a lot older, which is a good thing, because we have a lot of younger guys that haven't had that same experience. "But at the end of the day when you go out there and we have leadership like we have, especially up front on the offensive line, when you got Alex (Forsyth) and Ryan (Walk) and those guys that do their part and that carry that part of the line, it makes it kind of easy for a guy like me with similar experience to go out there and lead the other guys, lead the skill group. I take passion, take pride in it. It's fun to lead those guys and see those guys through to their potential and when their eyes light up and they figure something out for the first time it's a really good feeling." - The Oregonian

  08/22/22 - Mase FunarSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 254 (DS#44 DE) + More +

Mase Funa was not loving it in 2021. The Oregon Ducks strong-side linebacker had 28 tackles with one for loss, one fumble recovery and pass breakup in 12 games last season. It was a career-low in disruption in the backfield for Funa, who had 8.5 tackles for loss with four sacks as a true freshman in a backup role in 2019 and 31 tackles with 3.5 for loss over seven games in 2020. Foot and leg injuries played a role in his decline in production, but so too did his weight. At 245 pounds as a top 100 recruit in the class of 2019 and 260 pounds as a freshman, Funa was playing at a much higher weight than the 265 he was listed at last season.

Not surprisingly, his regular dinner order at McDonald's - two McDoubles, two McChickens, 20 chicken nuggets, large fries, large shake and large soda - packed on pounds. "That's pretty much why I was so big the last few years," Funa said. "I put down food. I'm Tongan, I got to eat." Funa cut down on fast food - way down. He said he trimmed down to between 235-240 pounds and that was too lean to still be effective on the edge. Now at 255 pounds, the fourth-year junior feels he's in the best shape of his career and poised to get back to being a disruptive force for the No. 11 Ducks this season. "Me and Mase have been in the same room for this is going on three years now," edge rusher Bradyn Swinson said. "Seeing Mase be from 290 all the way to 280 to see how his body transformed now, this is the best I've ever seen Mase's body. I'm really excited to see what Mase do because he's like a shape-shifter; one minute he can be 250, next minute he's 270 and next minute he's 280. It's amazing. Mase is going to do great things this year." - The Oregonian

Another of the Aggies' five-star recruits, Stewart stole the show in the spring game with seven catches, then impressed coach Jimbo Fisher in the summer. "Every day in the offseason program he was out front leading everybody running and doing things, and he's been very productive in all the practices and scrimmages," Fisher said.   Oregon Ducks football players are the latest to band together to form a collective that will pool name, image and likeness compensation related to an online community. The Eugene NIL Club launched Wednesday via YOKE, the same outlet that gained early adoption last year by college athletes looking to earn NIL compensation by playing fans in video games via its platform, with the goal of supporting at least 75 players. Donors to the collective can give any amount starting at $5 per month to participate in message boards and chat rooms, digital events with players and to watch player-generated content related to games and practices. For at least $25 per month, a member will receive a Justin Herbert Oregon jersey and for at least $100 per month a donor will be invited to a steak dinner with players this fall.

By midnight Wednesday, 182 members had pledged over $4,600 towards the club's monthly goal of $50,000. By comparison, the University of Pittsburgh launched the Steel City NIL Club on Wednesday and raised over $8,200 via 340 members. YOKE says it has an 18% "platform fee" associated with running the various team-related collectives, which also include similar operations at Arkansas, Auburn, Kansas State and Michigan State, among others. - The Oregonian

  08/11/22 - Nikko ReedrSr/2025, Oregon, 5-09, 183 (DS#36 CB) + More +

The leap from high school to college football isn't an easy one, as Nikko Reed found out a year ago. Entering his second season with the Colorado Buffaloes, Reed is much more comfortable. "I have been more locked in than I was last year," the true sophomore cornerback said after a recent practice. "I feel like camp was a bit of a struggle for me last year, but now that I've kind of gotten used to it, I'm locked in more." The struggle, Reed said, came from trying to learn the cornerback technique while going up against bigger and faster competition than he ever saw in high school.

Despite the struggle, Reed flashed his talent last season, playing 199 snaps and recording eight tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. He also had one kickoff return, taking it 100 yards for a touchdown in the finale against Utah. This year, the Buffs are counting on Reed to take the next step, as he's projected to be a starter. CU has very little experience in the secondary, so it is leaning on Reed and his 2021 recruiting classmates Kaylin Moore, Tyrin Taylor and Trevor Woods. "Nikko is having a great camp, Kaylin's having a really good camp and Tyrin," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "They're doing veteran things right now." - Daily Camera

The Oregon Ducks football team will open the 2022 season with the same ranking in the coaches poll as it had last year. The Ducks are No. 12 in the preseason poll released Monday with 734 points, second-highest among Pac-12 teams. Oregon, which finished 10-4 last season and lost in the Pac-12 Championship game and Alamo Bowl, will be ranked to start a season ranked for the 14th time in the 15 seasons. The Ducks are scheduled to play two other ranked teams: No. 3 Georgia and No. 8 Utah. No. 15 USC also was ranked from the Pac-12, while UCLA and Oregon State also received votes. - The Oregonian

  08/11/22 - Jadon CanadyrSr/2026, Oregon, 5-10, 185 (DS#76 CB) + More +

After excelling as a freshman nickelback last year, Tulane's Jadon Canady is preparing to start at cornerback this fall but still could log time at his old spot. Versatility is the buzzword as the coaches look for dramatic improvement from a secondary that played a significant role in the Green Wave finishing 115th in the nation in pass efficiency defense and 120th in yards allowed (271.2 per game). Canady, who intercepted Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler on the second play of his career, is one of several defensive backs training at more than one position. Macon Clark, a starter at free safety for all 12 games in 2021, is getting some time at nickelback along with Lance Robinson, who started the final three games at cornerback.

Standing pat was not an option after Tulane's disappointing season. "We're playing guys at multiple spots so we can get the best personnel on the field depending on the down and distance," second-year defensive coordinator Chris Hampton said. "We need better overall awareness. We are doing a lot of situational football (in practice), and the guys have really taken ownership." It starts with Canady, one of the few defensive pluses in the first half of last season before the unit improved down the stretch. His 54 tackles ranked fourth on the team, and he has added 20 pounds to get to 180 on his formerly slender frame. - New Orleans Times Picayune

  08/10/22 - Brandon DorlusrSr/2024, Oregon, 6-3, 283 (DS#9 DT) + More +

No Oregon Ducks position group has been more significantly and enormously enhanced this offseason than the interior defensive line. Starters Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae and Keyon Ware-Hudson all missed spring following winter surgeries and have returned to the field. Jordon Riley and Casey Rogers each arrived from Nebraska, where they played for Ducks defensive line coach Tony Tuioti. Then Sir Mells and Ben Roberts arrived, giving Oregon seven more players to open fall camp - two more scholarship players than the Ducks had in the spring.

"Going through the spring...when you're banged up, you realize, 'OK, this is the place where we got to try to make this a strength,'" Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "Casey and Jordon are obviously guys Coach Tuioti had worked with in the past. So we had a really intimate knowledge of them and their work ethic and what kind of players they are. That certainly helped us. "But I can't say enough good things. I'll tell you one guy that I don't think is getting enough praise is Brandon Dorlus. He didn't go through the spring. But Brandon's leadership, his work ethic, those guys follow in. I've been really excited to see that. Obviously, Popo and Keyon back is a big piece of our future success. Tony is an extreme perfectionist and (defensive coordinator Tosh) Lupoi also has an extensive background in the front seven. Those guys being able to develop these guys, I can't say enough for guys that we didn't necessarily recruit but they're buy-in." - The Oregonian

  08/10/22 - T.J. BassrSr/2023, Oregon, 6-4, 321 (DS#20 OG) + More +

Oregon opened fall camp with its top offensive lineman limited. T.J. Bass, a first team all-Pac-12 selection by the league's coaches last season, was one of the only limited players for the Ducks during their first practice of fall camp Friday afternoon at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. There was no apparent or obvious injury to Bass. After stretching, freshman receiver Justius Lowe went to the side to work with a trainer and rode an exercise bike. Oregon coach Dan Lanning said the issues for Bass and Lowe were not significant. Otherwise, there weren't any apparent absences for UO. - The Oregonian

  08/06/22 - Dillon GabrielrSr/2025, Oregon, 5-11, 205 (DS#12 QB) + More +

If it makes anyone feel better, Dillon Gabriel is not high among the quarterbacks listed in the myriad NFL Draft prospecti that flood the marketplace. Probably because Gabriel is 6-foot tall only on tippytoes. Not that being vertically challenged is an insurmountable curse. At the 2018 NFL Combine, Mayfield measured 5/8 of an inch over 6-foot. A year later, Murray measured 5-foot-10. Both went No. 1 in the draft. Gabriel is listed at 5-foot-11. "It's just something I was born with," Gabriel said Tuesday. "Can't control that one, right? But everything I do in the building and the way I work is what I can control, and just being really good at that, knowing I'm not 6-5, but shoot, I'm going to get it done whichever way I can."

Not to wish ill will on Gabriel's future, but the best-case scenario for OU football is that he has the kind of season Lebby predicted - unmatched production, leadership and experience - while NFL decision-makers worry about his height. Either way, the scouts won't likely doubt Gabriel's arm. "One of the greatest things Dillon does is throw the deep ball," Lebby said. "If you look at all of his throws on tape to his freshman and sophomore years and before he got hurt last year (at UCF), he can push the ball down the field. He's got great touch on it, understands how to get the ball out of his hand a little earlier if he needs to. That's a strength of his for sure." - Daily Oklahoman

  08/06/22 - Jordan BurchrSr/2025, Oregon, 6-4, 279 (DS#9 DE) + More +

Jordan Burch and Jordan Strachan are set to start at "Buck," or defensive end/pass-rusher in USC's terminology, replacing Aaron Sterling and JJ Enagbare. Each flashed at times last year in backup roles, but they're the guys now. "I feel this was probably the best football I've played since I've been here," Burch said after the spring game. "I feel like right now, everything's flowing. I really have everything now, I feel like." The game has changed so much that it's difficult to get a lot of sacks, but disrupting the offense by getting in the quarterback's face is certainly doable. Burch was one of the best prospects in the country when he signed and Strachan tied for the nation's lead in sacks in 2020 at Georgia State. USC needs the two to give them that consistent punch on defense, especially against the run. - The Post and Courier
