Dillon Gabriel has thrown for 8,034 yards with a 60.4 completion percentage and 70 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He did miss the last nine games last season with a broken clavicle suffered against Louisville, but he's full go now. "He's our quarterback," Venables said. "Certainly, anything can happen as we move forward through fall camp. It's always about daily competition. But I feel great I can lay my head down at night knowing not just what he has done on the football field but the quality of the person he is. "He's about all the right stuff," Venables said. "He's dependable. He's reliable. He's accountable. He's humble. He's one of the hardest workers, shows up early. He's last one to leave. Always working to improve. And he leads by example, and guys follow him. He's a galvanizer of people." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Oregon Ducks tight end Spencer Webb has died after falling and striking his head on rock slides at a popular swimming lake near Eugene, Oregon, authorities said. The 22-year-old who was expected to play his fifth football season at the University of Oregon this fall was found about 100 yards down a steep trail Wednesday afternoon at Triangle Lake. He was unresponsive and could not be revived by paramedics or bystanders, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said in statement. Authorities said his death appeared to be accidental.

Webb was also a social media star. His TikTok account, where he often posted about his life and athletic achievements, had more than 550,000 followers. Triangle Lake and the nearby Lake Creek Falls are a popular destination for swimmers who navigate naturally formed rock slides by inner tube and swim in several swimming holes. Webb was expected to compete for starting tight end this fall with Terrance Ferguson and Moliki Matavao, The Register-Guard reported. During his four seasons at Oregon, Webb recorded 31 receptions, 296 yards, and four touchdowns. His first career touchdown was arguably his most famous play, a 20-yard catch over a defender on a ball thrown by Justin Herbert in the 2019 season opener against Auburn. - AP College Football

He's been good, great at times. There was no doubting he would be, with his frame and athleticism luring coaches from the nation's power brokers to come see him. So maybe "breakout" isn't the right term. That would suggest Jordan Burch hasn't played up to expectations in his first two seasons at South Carolina, and that would be misleading. The Gamecocks, and supporters who watched him grow up in Columbia and stay in town for his college football career, are waiting for him to burst forth, erupt, explode, any of those synonyms for "breakout," as listed by Roget's. But it isn't because he hasn't been doing what they thought he'd be doing by now. It's because he's been behind upperclassmen such as JJ Enagbare and Aaron Sterling. It was because in his freshman year, COVID threw a wrench into the season and forced everybody to adjust, and Burch also injured his hand and missed the final two games of that season.

And yes, it's also because that, as strong of a prospect as Burch was when he was completing his all-world career at The Hammond School, he was hit by hype over which he had no control. It wasn't Burch who said, "Hey, I'm from South Carolina, I play defensive end and I'm committing to the Gamecocks, so I must be Jadeveon Clowney!" Kind of a lot to live up to - especially when it's everybody else making the comparison strictly because of that criteria, and not paying attention to how much the game has changed since Clowney played, and just how much of a larger-than-life figure he became. "We never really talked about that. I just encouraged him to be himself. I think his skill sets are drastically different than JD's," said his coach at Hammond, Erik Kimrey, who was also a USC assistant coach last year before returning to the high-school ranks. - The Post and Courier

  07/10/22 - Bo NixrSr/2024, Oregon + More +

After a year of inconsistent quarterback play with Anthony Brown under center, the Ducks are hoping for better production from either Auburn transfer Bo Nix, Ty Thompson or Jay Butterfield. Nix is familiar with Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham and the style he wants to play. Nix and Dillingham worked together when the two were at Auburn in 2019, and that was Nix's best season to date.

That year when Dillingham was the quarterback coach at Auburn, Nix passed for 2,542 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. Dillingham left to become the offensive coordinator at Florida State in 2020 and Nix's play was inconsistent during the last two seasons. During that span, Nix didn't throw more than 12 touchdowns a season. Last year, Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury in a game against Mississippi State. Not long after the season ended, Nix decided to transfer to Oregon with the hopes of fulfilling the potential many saw during his freshman season. - Register Guard

Last week after UCLA and USC decided to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten beginning in 2024, many speculated that Oregon and Washington could follow them. However, the Ducks and the Huskies could leave the Pac-12 for another conference. According to CBS Sports, the Big 12 is involved in "deep discussions" to add multiple Pac-12 schools. At least four schools - Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah - are being considered. The Big 12 is also contemplating adding Oregon and Washington to form an 18-team conference, which would be the biggest in the FBS.

Behind all this is the upcoming television contracts. The Big 12's deals with ESPN and FOX expire in 2025, while the Pac-12 contract with both networks is set to end in 2024. On Tuesday, the Pac-12 released a statement saying it met and authorized the conference to begin negotiations for its next media rights agreement immediately. It isn't a huge surprise the Big 12 is discussing a super conference in the wake of the Big Ten adding UCLA and USC and the SEC grabbing Oklahoma and Texas around the 2025 season. Without UCLA and USC, the Pac-12 is a shell of its former self. So losing Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado would likely be the final nail in the conference's coffin. - Register Guard

  06/11/22 - Bo NixrSr/2024, Oregon + More +

Oregon and its quarterback Bo Nix will be part of two separate deals announced Thursday between Fanatics Collectables and Topps. Beginning in the fall, Fanatics Collectables and Topps will produce collegiate football and basketball cards through a partnership with 150 universities. The two companies will also partner with over 200 athletes including Nix through the name, image and likeness deal. The partnership with Fanatics Collectables, Topps and student-athletes will put money directly into some of the biggest stars in college sports.

Athletes who are part of this deal will not be limited from signing with other trading card companies. Some of the players who will be featured this fall include Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Byrne Young, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett and USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Fanatics Collectibles began in 2021 after securing exclusive, long-term trading cards rights from several leading players associations and professional sports leagues. In January, Fanatics acquired Topps, the iconic trading cards brand that has serviced fans, collectors, and retailers for over 70 years. - Register Guard

  06/03/22 - Mase FunarSr/2024, Oregon + More +

One of Oregon's less heralded defenders, Masa Funa returns at strong-side linebacker for the Ducks. He's not as flashy of an edge defender as a situational pass rusher, but Funa sets the edge well in the run game and Oregon's issues there were evident when he missed some time last season. Jake Shipley is capable of playing defensive end or at SLB, as can Treven Ma'ae, and Jaden Navarrette could see time on either edge of the defense.

Funa had 28 tackles with one for loss and a fumble recovery in 12 games last season. That was a down tick in his production from just seven games in 2020 and he still had more tackles than Brandon Dorlus or Bradyn Swinson. Against more run-heavy offenses, Oregon needs Funa on the field to set the edge. He does a lot of dirty work to allow other players to make plays. - The Oregonian
