  Justin Herbert isn't satisfied yet but he's confident that the Ducks are on the right path. The senior quarterback threw for 316 yards and five touchdowns in No. 15 Oregon's 35-3 victory Saturday night over Montana, the Ducks' final tuneup before opening Pac-12 play at Stanford next week. Jacob Breeland and Johnny Johnson III each caught a pair of touchdowns for the Ducks (2-1), who won their 25th straight nonconference game at Autzen Stadium. "I think we've been doing some good things and definitely some stuff we can learn and fix, but I like the direction we're going in and I like the guys who've stepped up and made plays," Herbert said.

Herbert has thrown for a touchdown in 31 straight games, the longest current streak in the nation. It was his fifth career five-touchdown game, most by an Oregon quarterback. Marcus Mariota had four. Fifth-year senior Dalton Sneed threw for 184 yards for FCS-level Montana (2-1), which avoided its first shutout since 1988 with Brandon Purdy's 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter. "We need to get better. We lost," Montana coach Bobby Hauck said when asked what his team can take away from the game. "We came here to win, and we didn't do it." Oregon was coming off a 77-6 rout of Nevada that helped get the team back on track after a disappointing loss to Auburn in the season opener.   Freshman Dillon Gabriel threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns in his second college start, leading No. 17 UCF to a 45-27 rout of Stanford on Saturday. The Knights (3-0) scored on six of seven possessions, building a 31-point halftime lead in what was expected to be a much tougher test for the two-time defending American Athletic Conference champions, who won their first two games of the season by a combined score of 110-14 against Florida A&M and Florida Atlantic. Gabriel completed 22 of 30 passes, including TD throws of 28 yards to Marlon Williams, 38 yards to Tre Nixon, 38 yards to Gabriel Davis and 1-yard to Jake Hescook. Greg McCrae rushed for109 yards and one touchdown for UCF, which has won 25 consecutive regular-season games and 28 of 29 overall since the start of 2017.

Stanford (1-2), which tumbled out of the Top 25 after losing 45-20 at Southern California the previous week, yielded four touchdowns in the opening quarter and 413 yards total offense in the first half alone. K.J. Costello returned to Stanford's lineup after sitting out against USC with a head injury and completed 21 of44 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and an interception that led to one UCF score. Austin Jones had a 35-yard TD run and finished with 65 rushing for the Cardinal, while Costello's 24-yard TD pass to Michael Wilson's 24-yard TD reception trimmed the Cardinal's big halftime deficit to 38-17 early in the fourth quarter. - Central Florida Football

  Pressed into duty, Central Florida freshman quarterback Dillon Gabriel played well enough to beat Florida Atlantic, and perhaps even well enough to keep the starting job. Gabriel went 7 for 19 but threw touchdown passes of 57 and 74 yards, and No. 18 UCF extended its regular-season winning streak to 24 games by easing past Florida Atlantic 48-14 Saturday night. The highly regarded Gabriel made his first start after coming off the bench to throw three scoring passes in last week's season-opening rout of Florida A&M. Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush, who started the opener, was nursing an injury from that game and sat out. "When my name's called, I'm going to be there - whatever the team needs," Gabriel said. "We're in a unique situation at the quarterback position. Every guy has the talent to play."

Coach Josh Heupel said Wimbush could have played in an emergency, and declined to say which quarterback will start next week's game against No. 23 Stanford. Gabriel learned Thursday he would start against FAU. "Not a huge deal," he said. It was to the Owls, who were drubbed so thoroughly that coach Lane Kiffin apologized for his team's performance. Along with the two touchdown throws, Gabriel connected on passes of 45 and 32 yards, which more than made up for his frequent misfires. The left-hander totaled 245 yards passing - 35 per completion - and ran four times for 19 yards and a score. "He did some things really well," Heupel said.   With a romp over Nevada, No. 16 Oregon got back on track. Justin Herbert threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns before heading to the sideline in the third quarter, and the Ducks rebounded from their season-opening loss to Auburn with a 77-6 rout Saturday night. The Ducks (1-1) have won 15 straight home openers and 24 straight over nonconference foes at Autzen Stadium. Oregon tied a school record with seven touchdown passes - caught by seven receivers. The Ducks also tied their record for points at Autzen. "Huge step in the right direction," Herbert said afterward. "Tough loss last week but we came back and had a great week of practice and we were fired up to be here, and glad to get back at it tomorrow."

Tight end Jacob Breeland caught four passes for a career-high 112 yards and a score. A total of 11 Ducks scored. True freshman Brandon Talton kicked a pair of first-half field goals for Nevada (1-1). The Wolf Pack were coming off a 34-31 victory over Purdue last week, just their second win over a Big Ten program. The Ducks were coming off a 27-21 loss to Auburn in the team's high-profile season opener in Texas. Bo Nix threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 9 seconds remaining to give the Tigers the victory. Herbert finished with 242 yards passing a touchdown. - AP College Football

  In the first home start of quarterback Bo Nix's Auburn career, the true freshman had to carry the load for his offense the majority of the night. Nix threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, No. 10 Auburn ran for 172 yards after amassing just 20 in the first half and the Tigers' defense dominated in a 24-6 victory over Tulane on Saturday night. With a broken game clock already making for a slow and low-energy start to the game, the teams combined for 86 yards of offense across the first nine drives, with Tulane kicking a field goal on its opening series and Auburn (2-0) losing a fumble on its second.

After Tulane's first scoring drive, Auburn's defense locked down the Green Wave (1-1), allowing minus-3 yards over the next four possessions. A week after leading the Tigers to a last-second victory over Oregon last week in Texas, Nix found Will Hastings for a 31-yard touchdown pass two minutes into the second quarter to give Auburn the lead. The Tigers scored on back-to-back drives, with Nix's 40-yard completion to Seth Williams setting them up for a 4-yard touchdown run by Eli Stove. Nix was 19 for 37, tying the fifth-most passing attempts in a game by a freshman quarterback in program history. - AP College Football

  In two years of watching his starting quarterback grow, Boston College coach Steve Addazio could sense that it was coming. Anthony Brown: Leader. The BC junior had won some big games, and lost some others the Eagles should have won. He had helped the team with his arm and with his legs. He came back from injuries. But what Addazio saw in the 35-28 victory against Virginia Tech last week was new.

"In the huddle, on the sidelines, he's driving the football team, and we've been just dying to see that come out of him," Addazio said as the Eagles prepared for Saturday's game against Richmond. "Just really making corrections, driving the team, total command, unfazed, not riding the roller coaster of the ups and downs of the games. "At halftime, he was strong, real strong, and I loved it. It's what a veteran quarterback should bring to the table, and he brought it." A 6-foot-2 redshirt junior, Brown completed 15 of 26 passes for 275 yards on Saturday, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another.   Bo always knows at Auburn, even a true freshman quarterback by that name. After barely converting a fourth down with a gutsy run in the final minute, Bo Nix threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 9 seconds remaining as the 16th-ranked Tigers rallied for a 27-21 win over No. 11 Oregon on Saturday night. "He has some savviness to him, there's no doubt," coach Gus Malzahn said of the young quarterback. "When the game is on the line, you've got to make plays, and that's the one thing he showed." On fourth-and-3, Nix rolled to the right, then tucked and pushed forward. Only the nose of the ball, sitting at midfield, was past the chain when officials measured for a first down. "Play of the game," Malzahn said.

"When I saw him run and saw him scrambling, I thought he was going to throw the ball to me," running back JaTarvious Whitlow said. "And then I saw him stick those feet in the ground and cut up. I was like, 'You better get it. You better get it man!" And Nix wasn't done. On third-and-10 from the Oregon 39 and no timeouts, he hit Williams for 13 yards. The receiver got out of bounds with 16 seconds left, with Tigers already in field goal range. But the play-calling head coach wanted to give Williams the chance to make another play - and Nix delivered to put Auburn ahead for the first time. The Tigers, who trailed 21-6 late in the third quarter, delivered another early blow to the Pac-12. They beat the Pac-12's highest-ranked team in a season opener for the second year in a row - No. 6 Washington lost to them 21-16 in Atlanta last year. - AP College Football

  No cupcakes, no local rivals to open this season. Boston College jumped right into it with a victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. Anthony Brown threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Eagles to a 35-28 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday in the schools' opener. AJ Dillon and David Bailey each had a scoring run for BC, which posted a win over the Hokies for the second straight year. Kobay White (17 yards) and true freshman Zay Flowers (33-yarder) each had a TD catch.

</p>"Winning the opener is extremely important. It validates your offseason work and it gives you positive momentum. But winning your opener against a highly-quality football team, I think you get better from that," BC coach Steve Addazio said. "You can go out, win an opener against a team that maybe you're stronger than, but I don't think that it sometimes helps you because two weeks in, three weeks in you can get shocked at the speed of the game." - AP College Football

  Bo Nix is getting thrust right into the fire as Auburn's new quarterback. Just like his father, nearly 26 years ago. The 16th-ranked Tigers' freshman is set to make his college debut Saturday against No. 11 Oregon in Arlington, Texas, in a nationally televised game with ESPN's College GameDay in town for the game. "I guess it's as good as you can write up, but College GameDay for a freshman walking in...some people view that as tough, but I kind of see it as fun just because it's what you prepare for," Nix said. "I mean, why else would you play if you can't play at the highest atmosphere, environment and all that stuff? It will be fun, and we'll be ready to go." At least he had significant warning before being thrust into such a high-stress situation. His dad and high school coach, Patrick Nix, came off the bench for Auburn in the 1993 Iron Bowl, facing fourth-and-15 after a knee injury to starter Stan White.

Patrick Nix responded with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Frank Sanders to spark a come-from-behind, 22-14 win over rival Alabama and complete an 11-0 season for an Auburn team that was ineligible for the postseason. He then took over the starting job the following season. This won't necessarily be quite so dramatic. Bo Nix arrived at Auburn as the nation's top-rated dual threat quarterback, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Then he beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood for the starting job in preseason camp. Auburn hasn't started a freshman quarterback in a season opener since Travis Tidwell in 1946. That streak will end against the Pac-12 North favorites. - AP College Football
