  08/31/19 - Bo Nix, rSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 214 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Bo always knows at Auburn, even a true freshman quarterback by that name. After barely converting a fourth down with a gutsy run in the final minute, Bo Nix threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 9 seconds remaining as the 16th-ranked Tigers rallied for a 27-21 win over No. 11 Oregon on Saturday night. "He has some savviness to him, there's no doubt," coach Gus Malzahn said of the young quarterback. "When the game is on the line, you've got to make plays, and that's the one thing he showed." On fourth-and-3, Nix rolled to the right, then tucked and pushed forward. Only the nose of the ball, sitting at midfield, was past the chain when officials measured for a first down. "Play of the game," Malzahn said.

"When I saw him run and saw him scrambling, I thought he was going to throw the ball to me," running back JaTarvious Whitlow said. "And then I saw him stick those feet in the ground and cut up. I was like, 'You better get it. You better get it man!" And Nix wasn't done. On third-and-10 from the Oregon 39 and no timeouts, he hit Williams for 13 yards. The receiver got out of bounds with 16 seconds left, with Tigers already in field goal range. But the play-calling head coach wanted to give Williams the chance to make another play - and Nix delivered to put Auburn ahead for the first time. The Tigers, who trailed 21-6 late in the third quarter, delivered another early blow to the Pac-12. They beat the Pac-12's highest-ranked team in a season opener for the second year in a row - No. 6 Washington lost to them 21-16 in Atlanta last year. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Juwan Johnson, rSr/2020, Oregon, 6-4, 230 (DS#32 WR) + More +

Oregon's top receiver did not play in Saturday's season opening loss to Auburn.

Ducks starting X receiver Juwan Johnson, a graduate transfer from Penn State who Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said returned to practice last Sunday and was “100 percent healthy,” traveled to Dallas but was in street clothes on the sideline at AT&T Stadium as No. 11 Oregon lost to No. 16 Auburn 27-21.   08/31/19 - Anthony Brown Jr., rSr/2022, Oregon, 6-1, 217 (DS#18 QB) + More +

No cupcakes, no local rivals to open this season. Boston College jumped right into it with a victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. Anthony Brown threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Eagles to a 35-28 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday in the schools' opener. AJ Dillon and David Bailey each had a scoring run for BC, which posted a win over the Hokies for the second straight year. Kobay White (17 yards) and true freshman Zay Flowers (33-yarder) each had a TD catch.

</p>"Winning the opener is extremely important. It validates your offseason work and it gives you positive momentum. But winning your opener against a highly-quality football team, I think you get better from that," BC coach Steve Addazio said. "You can go out, win an opener against a team that maybe you're stronger than, but I don't think that it sometimes helps you because two weeks in, three weeks in you can get shocked at the speed of the game." - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - Bo Nix, rSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 214 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Bo Nix is getting thrust right into the fire as Auburn's new quarterback. Just like his father, nearly 26 years ago. The 16th-ranked Tigers' freshman is set to make his college debut Saturday against No. 11 Oregon in Arlington, Texas, in a nationally televised game with ESPN's College GameDay in town for the game. "I guess it's as good as you can write up, but College GameDay for a freshman walking in...some people view that as tough, but I kind of see it as fun just because it's what you prepare for," Nix said. "I mean, why else would you play if you can't play at the highest atmosphere, environment and all that stuff? It will be fun, and we'll be ready to go." At least he had significant warning before being thrust into such a high-stress situation. His dad and high school coach, Patrick Nix, came off the bench for Auburn in the 1993 Iron Bowl, facing fourth-and-15 after a knee injury to starter Stan White.

Patrick Nix responded with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Frank Sanders to spark a come-from-behind, 22-14 win over rival Alabama and complete an 11-0 season for an Auburn team that was ineligible for the postseason. He then took over the starting job the following season. This won't necessarily be quite so dramatic. Bo Nix arrived at Auburn as the nation's top-rated dual threat quarterback, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Then he beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood for the starting job in preseason camp. Auburn hasn't started a freshman quarterback in a season opener since Travis Tidwell in 1946. That streak will end against the Pac-12 North favorites. - AP College Football

  08/20/19 - Bo Nix, rSr/2024, Oregon, 6-2, 214 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Freshman Bo Nix will be Auburn's starting quarterback in the season opener. Auburn announced coach Gus Malzahn's decision on Twitter Tuesday, officially ending a battle with redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood. Nix will lead the 16th-ranked Tigers against Oregon on Aug. 31 in Arlington, Texas. He was a five-star prospect rated the nation's top dual threat quarterback in the 247Sports composite rankings. Nix's father, Patrick, played quarterback for the Tigers from 1992-95.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pound Bo Nix enrolled in January after leading his father's Pinson Valley High School team to consecutive Class 6A state titles. He set Alabama state career records with 12,000-plus yards of total offense and 161 touchdowns accounted for, including 127 passing and 34 rushing. - AP College Football

  08/08/19 - Justin Herbert, Sr/2020, Oregon, 6-6, 236 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Herbert, mentioned as a Heisman candidate heading into last season, threw for 3,153 yards with 29 touchdowns. He has thrown at least one touchdown in 28 straight games, the longest current streak in the nation. Over his 28 career starts, the Ducks have averaged 38.3 points a game. A local kid from Eugene's Sheldon High School, Herbert has thrown for 7,070 yards and 63 touchdowns in his three years so far.

While there was speculation he might bolt for the NFL after his junior season, Herbert announced shortly before Oregon's 7-6 victory over Michigan State in the RedBox Bowl that he would stay for his senior year. Barring disaster, he should be among the top quarterback prospects in next year's NFL draft. "I think it's a really special group of guys — all the guys sitting over there, they're great to be around, they're great teammates," Herbert said at Oregon's media day at the start of fall camp. "The coaching staff and all the staff, it's really special. It's really something I wanted to be around for another year." - AP College Football

  07/24/19 - Justin Herbert, Sr/2020, Oregon, 6-6, 236 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert remembers watching as a boy as Jeremiah Masoli, Darron Thomas and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota led the Ducks to conference titles. After deciding to return to school instead of declaring for the NFL draft, Herbert hopes to join that fraternity of quarterbacks as a senior. Herbert threw for 3,151 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior last season but Oregon still finished fourth in the Pac-12 North.

"We've been through the highest of highs and lowest of lows and we've seen all the success that's been at Oregon so we're capable of looking at it and realizing this isn't where we wanted to be," Herbert said. "There's a direction that we're heading and I think we need to keep going that way." - AP College Football
