  Oregon's defense began the game by giving up a 16-play touchdown drive. Justin Herbert then threw only his second interception since last November. The Ducks had barely survived back-to-back close games in the previous two weeks, and their winning streak appeared to be in peril again when they fell 10 points behind Southern California after the first quarter. A calming little chat on the Coliseum sideline kept Oregon firmly on track in the College Football Playoff race with another blowout win. Herbert passed for 225 yards and threw three touchdown passes to Juwan Johnson in the second half, and No. 7 Oregon recovered from a slow start to cruise to its eighth consecutive victory, 56-24 over USC on Saturday night.

Oregon (8-1, 6-0 Pac-12) obliterated that early deficit by scoring a touchdown after each of four turnovers by USC freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis during a 19-minute stretch spanning halftime. Freshman Mykael Wright also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown shortly after Brady Breeze returned an interception 32 yards for a score late in the second quarter. But the Ducks looked shaky in the opening quarter until they settled down and got to work. "We just looked at each other," Herbert said. "We knew that we're a special group, and we just needed to calm down and say, `This isn't us. We're going to do better.' And we addressed that and got to move the ball pretty well. We knew we were better than that. We just had to fix things." Herbert and receiver Jaylon Redd rushed for touchdowns in the first half for Oregon, which remained on track for the Pac-12 North title and a good shot at a playoff spot. - Oregon/AP College Football

  Auburn piled up yards, if not points, and the defense didn't permit many of either. Bo Nix passed for a career-high 340 yards and had a 1-yard touchdown run and the 11th-ranked Tigers withstood Mississippi's final drive to escape with a 20-14 victory Saturday night. Auburn (7-2, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) mostly dominated on the stat sheet but struggled to put the 19-point underdogs away after repeated stalled drives and three missed field goals. Anders Carlson's third miss, a 49-yarder with 1:14 to play, gave Ole Miss (3-6, 2-4) a shot at a winning drive. A defense that has kept Auburn in every game made one final stop. "When the game was on the line, I'm real proud of the offense flipping the field and real proud of the defense ending the game the way it did," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

The Tigers endured some harrowing moments along the way. The Rebels, who had no timeouts left, quickly moved from their 31 into Auburn territory. Plumlee hit Braylon Sanders for a 17-yard pass after a holding call negated a big gain and then ran 20 yards. Finally on fourth-and-3 from the 35, Plumlee scrambled around and made a desperation heave under pressure. Christian Tutt intercepted the ball and raced most of the way to the other end zone. And Auburn, which was coming off a 23-20 loss at No. 1 LSU, managed to survive. Nix completed 30 of 44 passes, including a 78-yarder to Harold Joiner that set up Auburn's first touchdown.   Dillon Gabriel passed for 298 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Tre Nixon, and ran for a score as Central Florida dominated the second half and beat Houston 44-29 on Saturday. Houston jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Mulbah Car's 37-yard TD run and a 45-yard field goal by Dalton Witherspoon. Gabriel hit Marlon Williams for a 6-yard score and, after Car scored on a 2-yard run, added a 32-yard scoring strike to Nixon to pull UCF (7-2, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) with 17-14 after one quarter. Gabriel scored on a 22-yard run midway through the second quarter to put the Knights up 21-17, but Witherspoon kicked two field goals in the final 4 minutes and Houston (3-6, 1-4) took a 23-21 lead into halftime. UCF put the game out of reach with three third-quarter touchdowns. Bentavious Thompson scored on a 43-yard run, Gabriel and Nixon hooked up for a 34-yard score and Thompson added a 2-yard TD run for a 42-23 lead heading into the final quarter. Gabriel hit 21 of 30 passes without an interception for the Knights. Nixon had six receptions for 123 yards. Clayton Tune completed 18 of 30 passes for 179 yards with one TD and one interception for the Cougars. Mar carried 26 times for 132 yards and two scores. - Central Florida/AP College Football

  Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert and Georgia kicker Rodrigo Blankenship were among the 12 finalists selected for the Campbell Trophy, given to the top scholar-athlete in college football. The finalists are selected from all levels college football by the National Football Foundation. The other finalists are: Eastern Washington's Spencer Blackburn; Ohio State's Jordan Fuller; Minnesota State's Alex Goettl; Kansas State's Adam Holtorf; Carnegie Mellon's Michael Lohmeier; Virginia's Jordan Mack; Montana's Dante Olson; Cornell's Jelani Taylor; Stanford's Casey Toohill; and Western Michigan's Jon Wassink. The finalists receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and the winner receives an additional $7,000 in scholarship money and the trophy named after former Columbia player and coach William V. Campbell. The winner will be announced Dec. 10 at the NFF's Hall of Fame induction in New York. - AP College Football

  In a lot of ways, CJ Verdell is like Oregon predecessor LaMichael James: What he lacks in size he makes up for with toughness and speed. The Ducks sophomore has emerged as a running back to watch with a record-setting performance against Washington State, joining Utah's Zack Moss and UCLA's Joshua Kelley among the Pac-12's top backs at this point of the season. The league returned six running backs this year who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season: Verdell, Moss, Kelley, as well as Arizona State's Eno Benjamin, Arizona's J.J. Taylor and Oregon State's Jermar Jefferson. Benjamin had 1,642 yards to set a single-season record for the Sun Devils while Jefferson set a Pac-12 record for freshmen with 1,380 yards. Verdell set some records of his own last Saturday when he rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns in No. 7 Oregon's 37-35 victory over the Cougars.

It was the most rushing yards ever for an Oregon player at Autzen Stadium and ranked fourth all-time for a Duck. It was also the first 200-yard rushing game by a Duck since Royce Freeman in 2016 and the first time an Oregon back has had 200 yards and three touchdowns since Kenjon Barner in 2012. Verdell, who is just 5-foot-9 but powerfully built, has rushed for 753 yards and five touchdowns this season. He burst on the scene last season as a redshirt freshman when he was the only player with at least 1,000 yards rushing and 300 yards receiving in the Power 5. - AP College Football

  Freshman kicker Camden Lewis flexed his muscles with a holler as teammates raised him on their shoulders. He had just nailed a 26-yard field goal as time expired, extending No. 11 Oregon's winning streak to seven games with a 37-35 victory over Washington State on Saturday night. He deserved that flex. CJ Verdell ran for a career-high 257 yards and three touchdowns for the Ducks (7-1, 5-0 Pac-12), who haven't lost since the season opener against Auburn.

Anthony Gordon's 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Brandon Arconado with a minute remaining gave Washington State a 35-34 lead. But then Justin Herbert completed four straight passes on the ensuing drive to get the Ducks close for Lewis' kick. "I want that kick so bad, that's just why you do it," Lewis said about his mindset as he watched Oregon march down the field. "I don't want them to score, I want to kick it." The loss snapped Washington State's four-game winning streak over Oregon. Gordon threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars (4-4, 1-4), while Arconado caught nine passes for 130 yards and two scores. Herbert threw for 222 yards but his streak of 35 straight games with a touchdown pass -- the longest active run in the nation -- was snapped. He threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns last week in a comeback victory over Washington to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. - Oregon/AP College Football
