  The fate of the college football season is still to be determined, but award watch season has arrived. On Monday two Oregon players, sophomore defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and junior defensive back Jevon Holland, were named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player. Thibodeaux was the Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year in 2019 after leading the Ducks with nine sacks. Holland, a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist, had 66 tackles and four interceptions last season.

Defensive coordinator Andy Avalos' unit, which ranked ninth in the FBS in points allowed (16.5 per game) and 22nd in yards allowed (329.1 per game) during his first season at Oregon, is expected to be even stronger in 2020. Both Thibodeaux and Holland are all-American candidates and projected first-round picks in the 2022 and 2021 NFL drafts, respectively. - Register Guard

  The Pac-12 Conference CEO Group announced today an adjustment of the 2020 schedules for Football, Volleyball and Soccer to a Conference-only model. This was done to safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes, coaches, staff and all associated with athletics events, and to provide the maximum flexibility in scheduling because of COVID-19. In addition, the Pac-12 announced it will delay the start of mandatory athletic activities, until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities. - Pac-12 Football

  Oregon's Justin Herbert and Satou Sabally each received a Tom Hansen Conference Medal from the Pac-12, an award given annually to the outstanding male and female graduating student-athletes from each school based on scholarship, athletics and leadership. Herbert, a general science major with a 4.01 grade point average, led Oregon to the Pac-12 football championship and Rose Bowl victory before being drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers with the sixth overall pick in April's NFL draft.   Gov. Kate Brown is ready for some football. Or at least for Oregon players and other athletes to begin preparing for the possibility of having a 2020 football season. During a news conference on Wednesday, Brown - who ordered the campus to remain closed through the remainder of the spring quarter, which ends June 12 - said Oregon athletes will be allowed to return to campus later this month. Last week, the Pac-12 announced that voluntary workouts for athletes at its member schools could begin on June 15. "I'm happy to say that our collegiate athletes will return to train by mid-June under specific health protocols to keep them safe and healthy and the staff healthy as well," Brown said. Coach Mario Cristobal said June 15 is the target date for some of his players to return. Oregon basketball coaches Dana Altman and Kelly Graves are targeting July to get their teams back together. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said all returning athletes in the conference will be tested for COVID-19 and for antibodies for the virus. - Register Guard

  As Brady Breeze ascended late in 2019, so too did Oregon's defense. If the redshirt-senior safety continues to produce at the level he did in the second half of last season, he'll be one of the most productive defensive backs in the Power 5 and an All-American candidate. It's been a remarkable rise for Breeze, who was buried on the depth chart entering the spring in 2019 and didn't even start until the USC game last season but is now among the Ducks' best players. By the end of last season there was little that could stop Breeze from making game-changing plays. He made 40 of by far his career-high 62 tackles in the final six games, both of his three interceptions, two of his three fumble returns including a touchdown in the Rose Bowl, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. Extrapolating that level of production of a full season leads to mind-blowing sorts of figures and ordinarily would be easily dismissed as unrealistic, but at this point there's nothing Breeze can do that would surprise anyone anymore. Having said all that, he can still develop and refine his game to become a sure-fire NFL draft pick. - The Oregonian

  05/21/20 - Deommodore Lenoir, Sr/2021, Oregon, 5-10, 199 (DS#29 CB) + More +

  Deommodore Lenoir took a big step forward in 2019 and will be a cornerstone of Oregon's defense in 2020. The senior is one of the better cover corners in the Pac-12 but still has room to grow and improve. If Lenoir is going to make the most of his final year before heading to the NFL, his situational awareness has to take a big leap and he's up front about that. DJ James got some early experience last season and could see more time in 2020 with the starting job open for the taking in 2021. Lenoir made 47 tackles with seven pass breakups, an interception and fumble return last season. Unfortunately for him, the touchdown he allowed to Brandon Aiyuk in the loss at Arizona State will be the play that most everyone remembers from the entire season but Lenoir made his fair share of plays as well. - The Oregonian

  The biggest hole Oregon has to fill on its defense this offseason is a spot where it had no doubts for the last four years thanks to Troy Dye: weak-side linebacker. Dye led the Ducks in tackles each of his four years and will go down as one of the best defenders in program history. For all Dye meant on the field, and that was a ton, everything else he brought to the program with intangibles like his leadership, accountability and personality might be the more difficult areas to replace in terms of his contributions. Sampson Niu will get the first shot to take over and Dru Mathis will also be in the mix, but as both are seniors the Ducks will be using 2020 as a stopgap to a long-term solution.

Niu is a violent downhill linebacker who plays bigger than his frame. At 6-1 and 215 pounds, which is up from 206 last season, Niu is more of a box safety in stature, but he hits like a freight train. He made 34 tackles with a sack and forced fumble last season and those could all see marked jumps if he gets the reps Dye did. "Sampson played a lot of football last year and he played some really good football," inside linebackers coach Ken Wilson said. "Whenever we had him on the field he did a nice job. So he's got the line right now of getting the reps with the ones. "But Dru Mathis played quite a bit last year. MJ Cunningham, you got the new guys that are coming in, Ge'mon Eaford getting back and into the mix on that side as a sophomore is going to be big." - The Oregonian

  On the edge of Oregon's defense it's Kayvon Thibodeaux's world and you don't want to get in his way. The former No. 1 recruit burst on the scene with 35 tackles, 14 for loss including nine sacks as a freshman and solidified his spot as Oregon's top pass rusher and one of the most disruptive defenders in the Pac-12. Considering the second half of the season is when Thibodeaux did most of his damage, the possibilities for his future production are seemingly limitless. The depth chart behind him is going to shuffle though, as Gus Cumberlander is gone and DJ Johnson moved to offense.

Mario Cristobal's take: "He's a different body type already. Last year he was in the 230s he's hitting 250s and plus over there. He takes a lot of pride in what he does. Not just playing the game and getting sacks, but technique, using his hands playing the run, knocking back tight ends, knocking back tackles, getting signals from the sideline and passing down calls, making adjustments. Your tells and your tips. The guy's hungry to be an elite football player and he's going to do everything he can to get there. I think it starts with playing the big bodies now that he has become a big body as well." - The Oregonian

  Sporting events in Oregon are likely to be without large crowds through at least the end of September. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Thursday the steps the state will take as it begins reopening next week. Brown asked those planning large gatherings, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events and conventions, to cancel or significantly modify plans for anything scheduled through at least September. That is likely to impact the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, the Portland Timbers of the MLS, and Oregon and Oregon State college football. While the NBA and MLS have no firm plans of a restart yet, Oregon and Oregon State both have three home games scheduled in September. - AP College Football

  The University of Oregon offensive line recently participated in a Zoom meeting. Former Ducks offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was invited to join, and the current UO lineman had a chance to ask questions to a guy who played eight NFL seasons. Penei Sewell had questions, of course. I'm told he usually does. But what's surprised me, and some others, is that Sewell also has some critics. In fact, when I told Oregon coach Mario Cristobal about a recent discussion about it he said, "Critics? Last I checked, he's projected No. 2 overall." Cristobal was talking about the 2021 NFL Draft.

I realized some point early last season that Cristobal isn't wired like most football coaches. I told anyone who would listen that Oregon's coach might be thrilled, for example, if one of his players won the Heisman Trophy. But he'd be even more jazzed about a Ducks' offensive lineman bringing home the Outland Trophy. By the end of the season, most of us knew Sewell was going to win the award annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. "The No. 1 thing," Schwartz told me after that virtual meeting, "he wants to be better. He wants to be great." - The Oregonian

  Not only is Johnny Johnson III coming off a junior season in which he led the Ducks in almost every receiving statistic, he's the No. 3 returning receiver in the Pac-12. That's a credit to Johnson, but also underscores the scale of overhaul Oregon and the Pac-12 at large will be going through this offseason. Johnson led the Ducks with 57 catches for 836 yards and seven touchdowns last season. That's third among returning Pac-12 receivers in yards and tied for second in touchdowns. In other words: Johnson is firmly in the conversation for preseason all-Pac-12 honors. For a player who entered last season with questions as to reliability due to drops in 2018, that's a huge jump. If Johnson is going to take the next step both for the Ducks and to improve his NFL prospects, he's going to have to become a 1,000-yard receiver. - The Oregonian

  Troy Dye has been losing sleep. But not over the NFL draft. Oregon's highly productive linebacker - the only player in program history to lead the team in tackles four consecutive seasons - was finally selected on the third day of the NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings with the 132nd overall pick in the fourth round. Getting a new job continues a life-changing month for Dye, who became a father on April 7 when his girlfriend, Oregon track standout Makenzie Dunmore, delivered their son.

"This whole month has been a whole new adventure, and I'm looking forward to it because that's what life's about - it's an adventure, a new journey," Dye said during a Zoom call with the media shortly after being drafted on Saturday. "I'm just looking forward to the new things that I have coming forward to me in life." Dye, who played for three defensive coordinators at Oregon, finished third on the school's career tackles list with 397 and is tied for fourth in tackles for loss with 44. - Register Guard

  Justin Herbert is staying on the West Coast. Oregon's star quarterback, who led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl victory in his final collegiate game, also will begin his professional career in Los Angeles. Herbert was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the sixth pick in Thursday's NFL draft. "Words can't describe how excited and thrilled and fired up I am for this opportunity," Herbert said on a Zoom video call with members of the media. "To be able to spend it in Eugene with my family … it's years of hard work. "I'm going to do everything I can to be the best quarterback I can be and do everything I can for the city of Los Angeles." NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the pick from his home in New York while Herbert, a three-sport star during his Sheldon High days, participated in the draft from his childhood home in Eugene. The draft was originally scheduled to be held in front of an estimated crowd of 600,000 in Las Vegas before the COVID-19 health crisis forced the event to be conducted virtually. - Register Guard

  The Los Angeles Chargers selected Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the first round of Thursday's 2020 NFL Draft. Herbert (6-foot-6, 236 pounds) is the first quarterback selected by the Chargers in the first round since 2004. The Eugene, Ore. native appeared in 43 career games (42 starts) for the Ducks, amassing 10,541 passing yards and 95 touchdowns to 23 interceptions. In his final college game, Herbert led the Ducks to a 28-27 win over Wisconsin in the 2020 Rose Bowl Game. He was named the game's Offensive MVP after scoring three rushing touchdowns, including a 30-yard, go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. In January, Herbert participated in the 2020 Senior Bowl as a member of the South Team. He went 9-of-12 for 83 yards and a touchdown in the game, good enough for MVP honors. - Chargers.com
