  Justin Herbert has been connected with the Miami Dolphins and the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2020 NFL draft, which begins with the first round on Thursday. Most evaluators expect Herbert won't fall past the Dolphins, with the No. 5 pick or the Chargers with the No. 6 pick. However, Herbert may not make it to the No. 5 pick. The New York Giants, with the No. 4 pick, have "spent a lot of time researching" and done a "ton of work" on the former Oregon Ducks' quarterback, according to a report. "The Giants have done more than their share of homework on Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert," said Ian Rapoport, an NFL insider for the NFL Network. "Herbert has FaceTimed recently with (Giants) head coach Joe Judge."

If the report is true, it's an intriguing development. The Giants stunned the NFL when they used the No. 6 pick to select Daniel Jones in the 2019 NFL draft. Jones posted a solid rookie season, with 3,027 yards, 24 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions and 18 fumbles in 13 games played while posting a 3-9 record as the starter. Jones was far from a disappointment and expectations are positive going into his second season. - The Oregonian

  The NCAA doubled the amount of time athletics staffs can have with their players, but the moved didn't faze the Auburn football players at all. After allowing four hours a week for team meetings and film review, the NCAA Division I Council Coordination Committee announced Thursday that teams will be able to have eight hours of virtual contact per week. That amount is no different than what they'd be doing if they were at school participating in spring practice, linebacker Chandler Wooten said. At Auburn, even if they weren't in practice, they were talking ball. Unless they're talking to their families, those conversations have been reduced to texts and calls.

Besides, it's not like they have that much else to do soon, center Nick Brahms said. Auburn's classes will end soon and he expects everyone will have more time throughout the day and into the evenings. "I think, you know, if we get more done throughout the week, we might as well," Brahms said. "So, I'd rather be talking ball than playing XBOX." All things considered, Brahms feels the team has gotten a lot accomplished during the four hours they had together each week, especially with the installs. Doing it all over Zoom has been different, Wooten said, but the meetings have been informative. - Birmingham News

  Justin Herbert is expected to be selected by one of three teams in the 2020 NFL draft. However, a fourth team may be interested in Herbert. The Detroit Lions conducted a video conference Herbert, the former Oregon Ducks quarterback, according to a report on Monday. The Lions also reportedly conducted a video conference with former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Are the Lions, with the No. 3 pick in the draft, joining the Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers as the teams most often connected with Herbert or Tagvailoa? Or are they trying to drive up the price to make a trade?

The Lions have veteran Matthew Stafford and he was playing very well until a back injury forced him to the sideline for the final seven games of the season. Stafford is expected to be ready for training camp, and owner Martha Firestone Ford has issued a "win now" mandate to head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn. The Lions aren't likely to use the pick to select a quarterback who won't start in 2020 and they're expected to select a player who can help them on defense immediately. The Lions have been connected with Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah and they might believe he could still be available if they trade down. With the Bengals expected to select Joe Burrow with the top pick, the Dolphins (No. 5) and Chargers (No. 6) are most often associated with Herbert. - The Oregonian

  Bo Nix didn't want to spend his spring break like so many of his peers. Auburn's starting quarterback - instead of taking time off or relaxing for a week before what was supposed to be the start of spring practices - wanted to get better, so he booked a trip out to California and headed west for the week. Before the coronavirus pandemic restricted travel and grinded the sports world to a halt, Nix spent some time in Dana Point, Calif., with a trio of quarterbacks - a former pro, a current one and a soon-to-be one - working to hone their skills. There was Joe Burrow, the reigning Heisman winner, national champion and presumptive No. 1 overall pick in next week's NFL Draft.

There was Sam Darnold, the current New York Jets quarterback who was drafted third overall two years ago. There was also Jordan Palmer, the one-time NFL quarterback who has established a post-playing career as one of the most respected private quarterback coaches around. Then, among them all, was Nix, the rising-sophomore at Auburn. "It was just, obviously spring break, wanted to go out there and work with (Palmer) and just get fundamentally sound again," Nix said last week during a Zoom conference call with local reporters. "… Just going out there, obviously you can learn so much from them and you can soak up so much knowledge from them and how they play the game and just how to go about playing quarterback on a level like that." - Birmingham News

  The quarterback position was one of uncertainty heading into the 2019 season with a quartet of players vying for the chance to become the starter. That won't be the case this season as Dillon Gabriel appears set as the incumbent for the job in 2020. The quarterback position was on the biggest uncertainties facing UCF entering the 2019-20 football season. True freshman Dillon Gabriel wound up earning the starting job in Week 2, leading the Knights to a 9-3 record while passing for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns. Gabriel is expected to remain the starter in 2020 and build on his success once the coronavirus pandemic is contained enough to allow college football teams to resume workouts.

But third-year UCF coach Josh Heupel has consistently said he isn't ready to name his Gabriel the starter just yet. "We've had great effort and guys are pushing to become their best," Heupel said of the quarterbacks. "And if you want to become a great player, you've got to separate yourself and every decision is a building block to take you where you want to be." New UCF quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle added, "Dillon is grinding harder than I've ever seen him. We had to pull him back and tell him, 'Hey, rest is important too.   Justin Herbert will virtually take part in the 2020 NFL Draft. The former Oregon quarterback is among 58 players who the NFL announced will take part in this year's draft, held April 23-25. This year's draft will also serve as a fundraiser for six charities battling with the spread of COVID-19. The American Red Cross, CDC Foundation's All of Us: Combat Coronavirus Campaign, Feeding America's COVID-19 Response Fund, Meals on Wheels America's COVID-19 Response Fund, Salvation Army and United Way's COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund will be featured as part of the "Draft-A-Thon" on ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes and NFL Network. - The Oregonian

  Justin Herbert may have overtaken Tua Tagovailoa in terms of which player will be the second quarterback selected in the 2020 NFL draft. The former Oregon Ducks' star quarterback seems to be gaining momentum as the quarterback who'll be selected after the Cincinnati Bengals do the expected and select former Louisiana State quarterback Joe Burrow with the No. 1 pick. The Miami Dolphins, currently with the No. 5 pick, had been connected with Tagovailoa and expected to select the former Alabama star in the draft. The Los Angeles Chargers, with the No. 6 pick, would select Herbert. However, because of Tagovailoa's injury history - a dislocated hip and two separate procedures on his ankles while at Alabama - and NFL teams' inability to conduct private workouts and physicals as a result of coronavirus pandemic, may have altered Dolphins' thinking on the two quarterbacks. There are reports the Dolphins might be getting antsy about taking on the risk of selecting Tagovailoa - who has been cleared for full contact - and leaning more toward Herbert. - The Oregonian

  Gus Malzahn isn't pontificating or speculating about the 2020 football season. Entering his eighth year at Auburn, Malzahn's focus is just now starting to shift back to football here amid Week 3 of everything being thrown out of whack due to the coronavirus outbreak. His focus, first and foremost, was with his team and making sure everyone is safe and healthy, and as remote instruction and installation of the offense and defense began this week, he has started to get his mind back fully to football mode-but he's not there just yet.

It's why, among other reasons, Malzahn hasn't even considered what will happen to the upcoming season - or if there will even be one, for that matter, as some have speculated in recent weeks - given the uncertain circumstances surrounding all of sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. "We're not speculating," Malzahn said Friday during a Zoom conference call with local reporters. "Really, as far as I've gotten to be honest with you is looking like if they report June 1, if they report June 15, if they report July 1, if they report July 15. To be honest with you, I've not gotten past July 15. So, really, my mindset is really just trying to stay positive and then to have the plan ready to go, specifically when they get back. I've not went anywhere in my mind past July the 15th." - Birmingham News

  A day after committing to the Oregon Ducks, Boston College graduate transfer quarterback Anthony Brown joined "Recruiting with Andrew Nemec" on 1080 The FAN to discuss his recruitment and decision to join the flock. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound signal-caller and three-year starter was forced to audible when it came to his visit plans due to the NCAA's recent enactment of an emergency recruiting dead period in response to growing concerns about the coronavirus. But Brown had already taken a trip to Oregon and was impressed by what he heard from Mario Cristobal and new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. He was also pleased that the trip didn't involve a sales pitch or a promise of playing time - just an opportunity to compete for the starting job vacated by graduating quarterback Justin Herbert. "I wasn't promised anything - and that's another thing that I really liked about the staff," Brown said. "No promises, no guarantees, no strings attached - just me coming in… and me coming in and competing with the other quarterbacks. And being able to bring experience to the table is a huge thing for me. I really appreciated the fact that they offered me the opportunity to come in and compete, especially with nothing guaranteed." The graduate transfer said the absence of a promise is "better for the team honestly… and better for the quarterback room." As a junior, Brown threw for 1,250 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions in six games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. - The Oregonian

  Anthony Brown Finally Makes Decision, Transfers to Oregon...Brown originally entered the transfer portal on Dec. 9 of last year. Early reports linked him to Miami, as the school was openly seeking a graduate transfer quarterback, but the Hurricanes eventually landed Houston transfer D'Eriq King. Brown also signaled that he was considering a potential return to the Eagles, retweeting several tweets that detailed how players who enter the transfer portal are still able to return to their original teams.

As the Eagles' day-one starter for the last three years, Brown notched 40 touchdown passes, 20 interceptions, and 4,738 passing yards during his tenure on the Heights. He improved significantly across his seasons, as his passer rating jumped from a 103.5 as a freshman to a 134.8 as a sophomore, and then to a 154.5 during the 2019 campaign. Brown was plagued by his injuries throughout his career, however, and he never played a full slate of games in any of his three seasons as starter. A tear to his right ACL ended his rookie season-after he redshirted as a first-year-and he only threw three passes in the Eagles' 2018 College Gameday matchup against then-No. 2 Clemson before exiting with an internal body injury. - Boston Globe

  Rece Davis is "more optimistic" than his ESPN colleague about the 2020 college football season in terms of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, "GameDay" analyst Kirk Herbstreit made headlines when he questioned whether there would be a college football season in the wake of COVID-19. On Monday, Davis joined "First Take" and was asked about Herbstreit's opinion. "I'm far more optimistic and more hopeful than Kirk's quote there at this point," Davis said Monday. "I just think that's a little bit premature at this juncture while offering the caveat that there is so much unknown out there. Kirk's right based on everything I've read in terms of medical experts, in terms of the vaccine. I'm hopeful and optimistic that with so many people working on this that we're going to have, at least, some kind of treatment, some type of break over the next several weeks that will, perhaps, make it far more feasible to have football. At this point, I'm far more optimistic. Might there be adjustments in the schedule? Might things change a little bit in terms of how the business is conducted? Sure."

Last week, Herbstreit said he would be "shocked" if there would be football this fall. "I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Herbstreit said. "Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a (coronavirus) vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it." - Birmingham News

  The cancelation of the remainder of spring sports and an uncertain timeline for a return to competition amid the coronavirus pandemic isn't stopping Auburn from moving forward with its plans for a standalone football facility. "Right now we are full steam ahead on the football facility," athletics director Allen Greene said Friday during a conference call with reporters. "Obviously, as things change on our campus and in our country and around the world, we will audible as we see fit, but we have been given the directive to move forward full steam ahead." Auburn's Board of Trustees in September approved the initiation of the program's "Football Performance Center" project, and during an emergency meeting in October, the board voted to approve the architects for the project, selecting the architecture firms of Goodwyn, Mills, Cawood of Montgomery and HOK Architects of Kansas City, Mo. - Birmingham News

  UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel will remain on campus while his classmates enjoy spring break next week. He wouldn't have it any other way. Instead of hitting the beach or going to parties, Gabriel's days will consist of a grind of workouts and film room sessions. Because in the end, an undefeated football season is worth more to the sophomore than a few days off. Why the relentless pursuit of perfection? "Obviously, not doing what I wanted, which is going undefeated," Gabriel said when asked why he felt the need to push himself during the spring. "That was our goal. We didn't meet that and when you don't meet a goal, you're disappointed.

"Personally, I'm going to do whatever it takes to get back to where we should be." UCF posted a 10-3 record in 2019, the program's third consecutive double-digit win season, but the three losses were the most since the 2016 campaign. Gabriel, who took over the starting job in Week 2, set a school record for passing yards in a season by a freshman with 3,653 yards. His 29 touchdown passes were the third-most in a season by a Knights quarterback and his passer rating (156.92) was the fifth-best in school history. But there were growing pains for the true freshman. All seven of Gabriel's interceptions took place during the team's three losses: Pittsburgh (2), Cincinnati (3) and Tulsa (2). - Orlando Sentinel

  Nix had a solid freshman season, setting Auburn freshman records for completions, passing yards, touchdowns and consecutive pass attempts without an interception (191 in a row to close the season) while earning the SEC's top rookie honor, but his first year on the field also left plenty to be desired. Nix's completion percentage (57.6 percent) was 10th among 12 qualifying SEC passers last season, while his 6.7 yards per pass attempt ranked ninth, as did his 125.03 passer rating. Among freshman quarterbacks nationally who appeared in at least half of their team's games, Nix tied for eighth in touchdowns, was 13th in completion rate, sixth in passing yards, tied for 13th in yards per attempt 11th in passer rating.

The arrival of the former Arkansas head coach as Auburn's new offensive coordinator and play-caller this offseason is expected to do wonders for Nix's development. Morris has a track record of developing quarterbacks-a list that includes former Texas high school standouts Jevan Snead and Garrett Gilbert, who both went on to sign at Texas; former Tulsa standout G.J. Kinne (3,650 yards and 30 touchdowns in one year with Morris); and former Clemson star Tajh Boyd, who won ACC Player of the Year during his second season working under Morris and totaled 11,575 yards, 103 passing touchdowns and 25 rushing scores in three seasons being coached by Morris. Morris, whose system comes from the same roots as Malzahn's while putting more emphasis on the passing game, will work hand in hand with Nix this offseason in hopes of making the sophomore his next star pupil. It's something one of Morris' former proteges, Boyd, is confident will happen, tweeting back in January that he expects Nix to throw for 3,800 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2020. - Birmingham News
