Arizona State's Michael Turk has been named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award which goes annually to the nation's top punter. Turk, the nephew of former NFL punter Matt Turk, only had 14 punts for an average of 47.21 yards in the shortened 2020 season but still earned first-team All-Pac 12 honors. He was a semifinalist for the award in 2019, finishing first in the Pac-12 and 11th in the nation in punting (46.0 ypp). Turk's high and booming kicks enabled ASU's punt coverage unit to finish 12th in the nation in net punting (41.6). - Arizona Republic

The Sooners landed several players on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy watch lists Tuesday. The watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player, included OU linebacker Nik Bonitto, defensive end Isaiah Thomas and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. All three players were also named to the preseason All-Big 12 team earlier this month, as the trio have inserted themselves as key defensive players to watch this season. Binitto was also named to the Butkus Award watch list earlier this week, which is given to the nation's top linebacker. Winfrey was also named to the Outland Trophy watch list, along with OU guards Marquis Hayes and Tyrese Robinson. Bonitto enters his senior year as a leader for the Sooners' improved defensive squad. Last season, the senior outside linebacker recorded 18 solo tackles and led the team with 8.5 sacks.   After a breakout season in 2020, Austin Stogner is another Sooners play to watch this fall. The junior tight end was announced as a player on the John Mackey Award watch list Friday, the award given to the nation's top tight end. It's the second consecutive year Stogner has landed on the watch list, and will look to be the Sooners first recipient of the ward since Mark Andrews in 2017. After recording seven catches during his freshman campaign, Stogner finished his sophomore season as a reliable target for quarterback Spencer Rattler. He was the third-leading receiver on the team, recording 26 receptions for 426 yards and three touchdowns. - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma and Texas took the first formal step Monday toward moving to the Southeastern Conference and leaving the Big 12 behind. The only schools to win college football national championships during the Big 12's 27-year history notified the conference they would not be renewing an agreement that binds its members through 2025. In a joint statement, the schools made no mention of the SEC and said “the universities intend to honor their existing grant of rights agreements."

"However, both universities will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape as they consider how best to position their athletics programs in the future," the schools said. Texas and Oklahoma have been in discussions with the SEC about joining the league, though neither school nor the powerhouse conference has acknowledged that publicly. The "grant of rights" gives the conference control of the school’s media rights and runs concurrent with the Big 12's television contracts with ESPN and Fox, which expire in 2025. - AP College Football

As the Sooners have risen, so has Bonitto, and that's no accident. "His turnaround has just been fantastic," OU coach Lincoln Riley said. "It's a great story to see where he was, and I think it's great for a lot of young athletes out there. They ought to read his story. Everybody thinks, 'Well, I get highly recruited and I'm gonna roll into OU or any of these other places and I'm gonna be this (star) and it's just gonna happen.' And Nik was extremely highly recruited, came out of one of the best high schools in the country and was extremely successful coming in and then, man, it was rough. "A lot of dudes would've quit. A lot of dudes would've transferred. A lot of guys would've went and done something else. He's reaping the rewards right now. Three years ago, to think that we would bring Nik Bonitto to Big 12 Media Days is … at that point I would've said, 'No way." - Daily Oklahoman

Redmond has been an intriguing player since his arrival from Midwest City, but his playing time has been drastically limited after health issues limited him to just three games as a freshman in 2018 and then he opted out last season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, though, Redmond looked like he was ready to fulfill those high expectations, with a team-leading 6.5 sacks and was third on the team with 11.0 tackles. Redmond has spent time both on the interior and edge for the Sooners, though the interior figures to be his preeminent spot in 2021, teaming with Perrion Winfrey to form a formidable duo on the inside. But with Redmond and Isaiah Thomas, OU has plenty of versatility up front and could mix and match things up there to take advantage of favorable matchups. - Daily Oklahoman

On Tuesday, the Big 12 announced its media-voted preseason all-conference teams, as well as its preseason offensive, defensive and newcomer players of the year. Nine Sooners were selected to the all-conference teams and Eric Gray, a junior running back transfer from Tennessee, was honored as newcomer of the year. Given Tuesday's dismissal of running back Mikey Henderson, the Sooners are bound to be counting on Gray to stay healthy, produce and carry a heavier load than previously figured. Henderson carried nine times for 81 yards and a touchdown last season from the H-back position. It was during spring drills he began the transition to running back. He is the second running back to be dismissed from the team since May, the other being Seth McGowan. - Norman Transcript

  05/29/21 - Phil PaearSr/2024, Oklahoma + More +

It didn't take long for Blake Anderson to start convincing former players from high profile college football conferences to transfer to Utah State. Shortly after Anderson was named USU's head coach last December, players from Power 5 conferences started announcing their intent to move to Cache Valley. In February alone, the Aggies signed six transfers from P5 programs in defensive ends Byron Hobbs-Vaughns (Texas) and Patrick Joyner Jr. (Miami), defensive tackle Jahaziel Lee (Georgia Tech), cornerback Kyle Mayberry (Kansas), running back Calvin Tyler Jr. (Oregon State) and offensive lineman Quazzel White (TCU).

That trend has continued into the spring as three former Big 10 Conference athletes have verbally committed to Anderson and the Aggies during the past seven weeks - two of whom were teammates at the University of Michigan. USU's latest verbal commit is former Michigan defensive tackle Phillip Paea, who announced his decision Wednesday on Instagram. Paea is following in the footsteps of Hunter Reynolds, who pledged his commitment to the Aggies in mid-April. Paea and Reynolds were both part of Michigan's 2017 recruiting class. - Herald Journal Tribune

Drake Stoops got a scholarship. Finally. All the OU walk-on receiver did last season was catch pretty much anything thrown at him, including the biggest touchdown of them all in overtime against Texas. He blocked with relentlessness. He ran pre-snap motion with abandon. He earned the scholarship Sooner coach Lincoln Riley awarded him after the spring game a couple weeks ago. Now, did Stoops need it? Not financially. Stoops, of course, is the son of legendary OU coach Bob Stoops. People who portend they know such things have estimated the net worth of the elder Stoops to be somewhere between $10 million and $20 million. Jeff Bezos, he's not, but Stoops probably isn't clipping coupons or hitting yard sales. Drake getting a scholarship doesn't change his family's finances a ton - but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve it. "I know it meant a great deal to him," Riley said on Thursday on a Zoom call. "There's occasionally families that are fortunate and well off and maybe the monetary aspect of it is not a big deal. "But it was a big, big deal to that kid, no question." - Daily Oklahoman
