WEEK 2 SEC CO-DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Gracen Halton, DT, Jr.,...Halton was a defensive standout in Oklahoma's narrow 16-12 victory over Houston. Halton registered two tackles for loss, including a sack for an 11-yard loss and a five-yard stop that resulted in a safety with 1:42 left in the game, preserving Oklahoma's slim lead. The safety was Oklahoma's only scoring play of the second half. Halton's efforts helped limit Houston to just 58 rushing yards and 1.7 yards per carry. Entering the season with only 3.5 career tackles for loss and no sacks, Halton now ranks second among SEC defensive linemen with 3.5 tackles for loss this season and has 2.5 sacks totaling 20 yards. - SEC Football

WEEK 1 SEC CO-SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tyler Keltner, PK, RS-Sr.,...In his Oklahoma debut, redshirt senior kicker Tyler Keltner made field goals of 50, 42, and 24 yards and all six PAT attempts to help the Sooners to a 51-3 win over Temple on Friday. The 50-yarder came on his first attempt of the game, was OU's first 50-yard field goal make since the 2021 season and just the fourth in a season opener in program history. Keltner became only the second OU kicker to convert a 50-yard field goal on his first attempt as a Sooner. The other occurrence came in 1973. Keltner's 15 points tied for the most by an SEC kicker on the week. Among the three SEC kickers who made three field goals, he was the only one with a 50-yarder. - SEC Football

  08/31/24 - Jaydn OttSr/2026, Oklahoma + More +

The California Golden Bears shook off a rusty start to open their inaugural ACC season with 31-13 win over UC Davis on Saturday, their 12th straight win over the Aggies to remain undefeated in 34 starts against the Big-Sky Conference. The Bears found their stride late in the game after a slow and messy start. Aggies new coach Tim Plough's offensive scheme was innovative enough to make the game competitive through the third quarter. Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza earned the start over Chandler Rogers after a contentious fall camp and threw for 158 yards and a touchdown, completing 15 of 22 attempts.

Running in shotgun formation without a huddle, Mendoza looked uncomfortable under center. Meanwhile Jadyn Ott, who averaged 92.2 rushing yards per game last season, was stifled with only six carries and 11 yards in the first two quarters. Cal was forced to punt three times. Ott finished the game with 49 rushing yards and two touchdowns but was sidelined with a late injury. The Aggies put up 14 points behind a fumble recovery by Porter Connors and a one-yard rushing touchdown from Lan Larison. - AP College Football

John Mateer threw five touchdown passes and Washington State began a season of dramatic change in big-play style with a 70-30 win over Portland State on Saturday. Left behind with Oregon State amid the ruins of the Pac-12 collapse, the Cougars are playing an independent schedule, facing mostly Mountain West schools. But Saturday they created 637 yards offense and eight offensive scoring plays of 30 yards or more against the FCS Vikings. It was the first time WSU reached 70 points since 1997 when it scored 77 against Southwestern Louisiana.

Mateer, who had appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons with just 19 total passing attempts, started for WSU, taking over for Cam Ward, who transferred to Miami. Mateer threw TD passes ranging from 30 to 59 yards, starting with Kris Hutson’s diving catch. Mateer added a 40-yard touchdown on a quarterback draw and WSU led 49-17 at halftime. The Cougars had nearly 400 yards offense in the first half. The defense also turned in a big play when Stephen Hall made an interception a few yards deep in the end zone and returned it for officially a school-record 100-yard pick-6. - AP College Football

Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson - who started most of last season for the Huskers - will be "limited" in NU's upcoming spring camp, coach Matt Rhule said Monday. Thompson is recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder after passing for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. "We're hoping he'll able to throw, but he'll be pretty limited," Rhule said. "And we'll err on the side of caution with all these guys, right? I don't see him being able to do very much other than potentially, at some point, being able to throw."

Thompson has participated in parts of offseason conditioning, and is part of a large quarterback room that includes Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims and four more scholarship players in Chubba Purdy, Logan Smothers, Heinrich Haarberg and Richard Torres. Rhule said Monday that Purdy and Haarberg are among the fastest players on the team according to GPS tracking software. The 6-foot, 195-pound Thompson has a history of injuries - and playing through them. At Texas, he toiled through a broken throwing thumb that didn't fully heal until summer 2022 surgery. During the 2022 season, he suffered elbow nerve damage that kept him out of 2½ games. The shoulder was its own problem. - Lincoln Journal Star

When Austin Stogner entered the transfer portal on Dec. 5, he knew where he wanted to go. He just didn't know how to get the wheels in motion. The South Carolina tight end wanted to transfer to OU, where he spent the first three years of his college career. A second stint with a program is rare, even in the unpredictable era of the transfer portal, which is why Stogner was hesitant to return to Norman. "I really want to go back to OU, but I think that'd be kinda weird," Brad Stogner recalls his son, Austin, telling him. But Stogner ultimately did commit to OU on Dec. 8, marking the return of the former All-Big 12 second-team honoree.

It's a major addition for the Sooners, and it's one that materialized in a matter of fewer than 24 hours. The Plano, Texas, native joined OU in 2019 as a four-star prospect. ESPN rated Stogner as the No. 2 tight end in his class, and it didn't take long for him to contribute. Stogner had 26 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2020, which helped him earn a spot on the All-Big 12 second team. Stogner likely would've put up even larger numbers had he not contracted a staph infection following a hit he took in a Week 10 game against Kansas. He lost about 35 pounds and missed all but one of OU's last five games as a result. - Daily Oklahoman

Walter Rouse was a big late win in the portal, as the Sooners secured his commitment after Rouse had already committed to Nebraska. Bill Bedenbaugh had plenty of success last season in the portal, grabbing McKade Mettauer from Cal and Tyler Guyton from TCU. Rouse fits that mold, and with Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris making the move to the NFL, there will be plenty of opportunity to make a quick impact. - Daily Oklahoman

  01/22/23 - Phil PaearSr/2024, Oklahoma + More +

At the current rate of departures, Utah State might struggle to field a defensive line next season. Since the conclusion of 2022 college football season, seven Aggies defensive lineman have entered the transfer portal, the latest becoming official Wednesday afternoon. One-time Michigan Wolverine Phillip Paea announced on social media that he has entered the transfer portal, following in the footsteps of Tavian Coleman, Daniel Grzesiak (Cincinnati), Patrick Joyner Jr. (Kansas), Aurion Peoples, Addison Trupp and Byron Vaughns.

Paea was a starter at defensive tackle for Utah State to begin last season, though his year was cut short after he tore his ACL in the Aggies' loss to Weber State in early September. In two games played (with a smattering of time against the Wildcats too), Paea recorded two tackles and an interception. As a junior in 2021, the 6-foot-4, 305 pound Paea played in all 14 games for the Mountain West Conference champion Aggies, and finished with 14 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Prior to arriving at Utah State, Paea spent four years at Michigan, where he appeared in three total games, while playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. - Deseret News

The transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh away - sometimes with the same player in the span of three days. Walter Rouse, the Stanford offensive tackle who committed to Nebraska on Wednesday, flipped to Oklahoma by Saturday. The 6-foot-6, 318-pounder said this week that NU would "shock the world" in 2023. By the weekend, he'd pulled a shocker himself. "I never knew how the power of one's faith and gut intuition could so forcefully persuade a decision," Rouse wrote on Twitter. "That happened to me this week." - Lincoln Journal Star

OU suffered one of its biggest losses of the offseason Friday. Junior wide receiver Marvin Mims announced his decision to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. He finishes his three-year college career with 2,398 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns on 123 receptions. Mims is ranked in the top 15 in program history for receiving yards (eighth), receiving touchdowns (10th) and receptions (15th). "To my brothers and coaches, thank you for pouring into me and pushing me every day to be the best person I can be on and off the field," Mims said via a statement on Twitter. "Sooner Nation, thank you for making a 17-year-old boy's dreams come true! The endless support and love will never be taken for granted."

Mims has been an impact player for OU since his first season in 2020. The former four-star prospect out of Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, racked up a team-high 610 yards on 37 receptions and tied the Big 12 true freshman record of nine touchdowns catches. Mims served as the driving force in OU's passing game this season. He recorded career-highs of 54 receptions and 1,083 receiving yards to go along with six touchdowns. - Daily Oklahoman
