  07/10/22 - Austin StognerrSr/2024, Oklahoma, 6-6, 254 (DS#22 TE) + More +

It's become a running gag, a tweet snarkily promised before every show that always ends up coming true. Shane Beamer, as did Will Muschamp and Steve Spurrier before him, holds his in-season Thursday radio call-in show and without fail, a caller will ask why South Carolina doesn't make better use of its tight ends. When they ask this season - and there is no "if" about it - the inquiries may be laced with more venom. That's because some of those callers may be NFL scouts, wondering the same as Sally Q. Fan: Why not use these guys if you have them? Jaheim Bell and Austin Stogner check into the 2022 season as the No. 12 and 16 NFL-ready tight ends in the country, according to Phil Steele's preseason Bible.

Bell caught more passes for more yards for USC than anyone not named Josh Vann last year, bustin' loose with a five-catch, 159-yard, two-touchdown day in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Stogner caught 37 passes for 654 yards and eight TDs in three seasons at Oklahoma, and brought a surprise gift with him to Columbia when he transferred: Quarterback Spencer Rattler. "He's just another weapon that we can use," Rattler said of Stogner, whose arrival at USC was delayed until this summer. "Just a complete mismatch, no matter what team we were playing. He was always the go-to guy in that third-down situation, or when we need to get the ball up to somebody, he was a big-time target for us." - The Post and Courier

  07/08/22 - Michael TurkrSr/2023, Oklahoma, 6-0, 227 (DS#4 P) + More +

Six Kansas State Wildcats made the 29-man preseason all-Big 12 football team. Five Baylor Bears joined them. And four West Virginia Mountaineers along with four Iowa State Cyclones. One Oklahoma Sooner was on the team. That's right. One. Punter Michael Turk. The OU masses are indignant and maybe they should be. Pushback over the Sooners' and Texas' eventual move to the Southeastern Conference? Maybe. Only three UT made the preseason team, and usually the squad is packed with Sooners and Longhorns. For all I know, the Sooners will be the pick to win the conference, when those same voters' opinions are revealed Thursday, and the league's best team ought to be represented by more than a punter. - Daily Oklahoman

  05/27/22 - *Marvin Mims Jr.Jr/2023, Oklahoma, 5-11, 183 (DS#9 WR) + More +

The first game of the Brent Venables era will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 3 and be televised on Fox, OU announced Thursday. The home game against UTEP is one of two Sooners' nonconference games that will be televised on the network, joining the Sept. 17 game at Nebraska, which will kick off at 11 a.m. on the network. OU's other non-conference game, at home against Kent State, will kick off at 6 p.m. and air on SoonerVision on ESPN Plus. While the kickoff time for the OU-Texas game Oct. 8 wasn't announced, the game will air on ABC. OU's game at Iowa State, originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 29 and will be televised on either Fox or FS1, with kickoff time to be determined. - Daily Oklahoman

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Junior wide receiver Marvin Mims is one of the best players who stayed after coach Lincoln Riley left for USC, and the speedster should be a primary target for transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Mims was one of the most electrifying players in the Big 12 last season, averaging 22 yards on 32 receptions. - AP College Football

  05/05/22 - Casey ThompsonrSr/2025, Oklahoma, 6-0, 205 (DS#56 QB) + More +

Thompson is the most notable transfer Nebraska has added so far because of the position he plays. He started 10 games for the Longhorns last year and led the Big 12 in touchdown passes with 24. He'll be considered the favorite to win NU's starting quarterback job under new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. He'll be on campus for this semester. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/04/22 - Perrion WinfreySr/2022, Oklahoma, 6-4, 290 (DS#4 DT) + More +

Former OU defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was the third player off the board on the final day of the draft, selected in Round 4 by the Cleveland Browns with the 108th overall pick. And when time came for Winfrey to acquaint himself with his new home, on a Zoom call with local Cleveland media, the two-time All-Big 12 tackle brought the energy as he answered questions while pacing around his Illinois home. "This is me - 100 percent concentrated. No smoke," Winfrey told reporters. "This is how I wake up. Juiced up. To be honest, I just woke up at 10:40 a.m. It is 11:30 a.m. and I am juiced. No coffee needed." After two seasons with the Sooners in Norman, Winfrey shot up draft boards with an eye-catching Senior Bowl showing in February.

But he slid in Rounds 2 and 3 Friday night and entered Saturday undrafted before the Browns came calling early on Day 3. By the time Winfrey spoke with reporters Saturday afternoon, he wasn't sweating that. "I expected to go early. But to be honest, I needed this," Winfrey said. "This was a wake-up call and this gave me all of the fuel and all of the fire I needed to come into the league and dominate. So I wouldn't change a thing." - Tulsa World

  04/23/22 - Brayden WillisrSr/2023, Oklahoma, 6-4, 241 (DS#15 TE) + More +

Brayden Willis hadn't been recruited in years. The 6-foot-4 tight end/halfback is all grown up as he enters his fifth season at OU. He arrived in 2018 as a 220-pound freshman with a baby face and a mustache that was just starting to grow. Nowadays, he's a 237-pound super senior with a beard thick enough to cushion the blow of a would-be tackler. Each step of Willis' journey to manhood has unfolded in Norman, which is why he didn't struggle with the dilemma he faced this past offseason. A wave of OU players entered the transfer portal following head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to leave for USC last November.

When the Sooners hired Brent Venables as their new coach, Willis found himself being recruited all over again by the Sooner coaching staff. Fortunately for OU, it wasn't a hard sell. "I never wanted to leave," Willis said. "Whenever there was the switch, I had no interest in transferring. It was either I was gonna go on to the next level or I was gonna stay at Oklahoma. This is a special place. I love it here, and I just wanted to be here with my team." Once an opportunity to move to the NFL didn't present itself, Willis shifted his focus to being the leader of an OU tight end room with plenty of young talent. - Daily Oklahoman
