When Austin Stogner entered the transfer portal on Dec. 5, he knew where he wanted to go. He just didn't know how to get the wheels in motion. The South Carolina tight end wanted to transfer to OU, where he spent the first three years of his college care er. A second stint with a program is rare, even in the unpredictable era of the transfer portal, which is why Stogner was hesitant to return to Norman. "I really want to go back to OU, but I think that'd be kinda weird," Brad Stogner recalls his son, Aus tin, telling him. But Stogner ultimately did commit to OU on Dec. 8, marking the return of the former All-Big 12 second-team honoree.It's a major addition for the Sooners, and it's one that materialized in a matter of fewer than 24 hours. The Plan o, Texas, native joined OU in 2019 as a four-star prospect. ESPN rated Stogner as the No. 2 tight end in his class, and it didn't take long for him to contribute. Stogner had 26 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2020, which hel ped him earn a spot on the All-Big 12 second team. Stogner likely would've put up even larger numbers had he not contracted a staph infection following a hit he took in a Week 10 game against Kansas. Thanks to the NCAA Transfer Portal, there will be a homecoming in Norman. South Carolina tight end Austin Stogner announced Thursday that he is transferring to Oklahoma after one season with the Gamecocks. The former OU tight end played for the Sooners f rom 2019-2021, recording 47 catches for 654 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season came in 2020, when he ranked third on the team in catches (26) and receiving yards (422) while adding three scores.Expectations were high for Stogner entering the 2021 season but he never found his footing, catching 14 passes for 166 yards. Stogner, along with former OU quarterback Spencer Rattler, transferred to South Carolina at the end of the regular season. Spencer Rattler threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score in South Carolina's 50-10 victory over South Carolina State in a game moved from Saturday to Thursday night because of Hurricane Ian. Rattler finished with 212 yards, completing 21 of 27 pass es including a 5-yard scoring strike to tailback MarShawn Lloyd and an 11-yarder to tight end Austin Stogner, his teammate at Oklahoma, to help South Carolina (3-2) rout the FCS Bulldogs (1-3). Administrators at both schools agreed to the change because of the hurricane's approach. Ian moved through Florida into the Atlantic and was expected to re-enter land in the Palmetto State as a Category 1 storm Friday.Many parking areas were half-filled at best and the normal, Southeastern Conference-style tailgating setups were absent for this one. South Carolina said 61,551 were at Williams-Brice Stadium, which lists a capacity of 77,559. But the upper decks were largely empty and it wasn't a stretch to think only about the announced crowd came out. The Gamecocks overcame a sluggish start, including two interceptions off Rattler's receivers' hands, to take control in the opening half. The Gamecocks broke through on Rattler's first-quarter TD toss to Lloyd, which was followed by a funky, "swinging gate" formation on a successful two-point conversion by defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway. South Carolina pulled out the wishbone on its next touchdown, a 1-yard handoff to versatile tight end Jaheim Bell. Rattler ran his way to a score from 6 yards out with 37 seconds left in the half to put Gamecocks up 22-0. It's become a running gag, a tweet snarkily promised before every show that always ends up coming true. Shane Beamer, as did Will Muschamp and Steve Spurrier before him, holds his in-season Thursday radio call-in show and without fail, a caller will ask why South Carolina doesn't make better use of its tight ends. When they ask this season - and there is no "if" about it - the inquiries may be laced with more venom. That's because some of those callers may be NFL scouts, wondering the same as Sally Q. F an: Why not use these guys if you have them? Jaheim Bell and Austin Stogner check into the 2022 season as the No. 12 and 16 NFL-ready tight ends in the country, according to Phil Steele's preseason Bible.Bell caught more passes for more yards for USC than anyone not named Josh Vann last year, bustin' loose with a five-catch, 159-yard, two-touchdown day in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Stogner caught 37 passes for 654 yards and eight TDs in three seasons at Oklahoma, and brought a surprise gift with him t o Columbia when he transferred: Quarterback Spencer Rattler. Austin Stogner was begging for relief. "You've got to knock me out," Stogner told doctors at Oklahoma City's McBride Orthopedic Hospital. "I'm going through it right now." Pain was nothing new for Stogner, OU's bruising tight end that was having a breako ut season before the helmet of Kansas safety Ricky Thomas collided with Stogner's thigh last Nov. 7, knocking him out of the game. But this? This was different. "It was excruciating," Stogner said Thursday at OU's Media Day, a day before the Sooners begi n preseason camp.In the days that followed the series of events that led him to McBride in early November, the focus became not about whether Stogner's football season would continue but whether he'd be able to recover from a strep infection that led him to lose about 35 pounds and struggle to do things that once seemed easy. But nearly nine months later, Stogner says he's back to being the player he was before Thomas' helmet met his legs. "I feel 100%," Stogner said. "I feel the best I've felt s ince being injured - since I've been here." Stogner missed the Sooners' last two regular-season games and the Big 12 title game before returning to have a 12-yard reception in the Cotton Bowl win over Florida. Even missing that time, Stogner finished as OU's third-leading receiver with 26 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns. Stogner was having a terrific season when an injury against Kansas derailed it, and threatened his football future. But Stogner figures to be a major weapon for the Sooners once again as he's worked back close to full strength. Stogner had plenty of chem istry with Spencer Rattler, averaging 16.2 yards per catch with three touchdowns. After a breakout season in 2020, Austin Stogner is another Sooners play to watch this fall. The junior tight end was announced as a player on the John Mackey Award watch list Friday, the award given to the nation's top tight end. It's the second consecut ive year Stogner has landed on the watch list, and will look to be the Sooners first recipient of the ward since Mark Andrews in 2017. After recording seven catches during his freshman campaign, Stogner finished his sophomore season as a reliable target for quarterback Spencer Rattler.
