Defending FCS National Champ North Dakota State has been tabbed as the league preseason favorite in a poll conducted by league coaches, media, and sports information directors. NDSU received 39 of a possible 41 first-place votes and 446 total points to edge South Dakota State, which earned 407 points and the remaining two first-place tallies. Missouri State was picked third in this year's preseason poll with 355 total points, while Southern Illinois (4th, 306 points) and UNI (5th, 304 points) were tightly bunched for the next two spots. A returning playoff participant from last season, South Dakota was picked 6th with 235 points. North Dakota (190), Illinois State (178), Youngstown State (132), Indiana State (109) and Western Illinois (44) round out the voting. In 2021, for the first time in Conference history, six Missouri Valley Football Conference teams earned bids into the 24-team FCS playoff field. Only one other conference in NCAA history has received six bids in a single playoff (CAA in 2018). The MVFC had received as many as five bids four times previously (2014, 2015, 2017, and in Spring 2021). - Missouri Valley Football

Hunter Luepke had touchdown receptions of 32 and 22 yards to bookend the scoring and added 106 yards rushing on 17 carries to help No. 2 seed North Dakota State beat James Madison 20-14 on Friday night in the semifinals of the FCS playoffs. North Dakota State (13-1) plays the winner between No. 8 seed Montana State and unseeded South Dakota State - which handed the Bison their only loss this season, 27-19 on Nov. 6 in Brookings, South Dakota - for the national championship in Frisco, Texas, on Jan. 8.

NDSU has won three straight, and four of its five all-time, meetings with the Dukes, all in the FCS playoffs, and is 31-1 at home in postseason - the lone loss coming against JMU, 27-17 in the 2016 semifinals. The Bison beat JMU for the 2017 and 2019 national titles, winning 17-13 and 28-20, respectively. Miller scrambled for an 11-yard gain on third-and-12 and then lunged forward on a QB sneak to convert on fourth-and-short on a 15-play, 74-yard drive that took more than 6 minutes off the clock but ultimately ended when Jake Reinholz made a 20-yard field goal that made it 13-0 with 2 seconds left in the second quarter. - North Dakota State/AP College Football

The Bison have reached the semifinals for the 10th time, third-most among FCS teams. ETSU (11-2) had watched a 55-yard field goal attempt fall short and to the left, giving the Bison possession at their own 38. Eight plays later, Williams barreled in from the 3. ETSU was forced to punt after a three-and-out and North Dakota State went 76 yards to score again in nine plays, Williams scoring from the 7. In the third quarter, Michael Tutsie stepped in front of the intended receiver to pick off Tyler Riddell near midfield and, four plays later, Miller scored from the 3. The interception came one play after the Buccaneers stopped North Dakota State on downs. Riddell was throwing under pressure. - North Dakota State/AP College Football
