  10/02/19 - Khalil DavisrSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-1, 308 (DS#14 DT) + More +

Nebraska defensive lineman Khalil Davis has been suspended for the game against Northwestern on Saturday for striking an Ohio State player in violation of the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy. The Big Ten announced the suspension on Wednesday and also issued a public reprimand. The conference said Davis struck an Ohio State player near the 9:18 mark of the first quarter last Saturday. No penalty was called.

Big Ten policy says the conference “expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of the competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.” Nebraska coach Scott Frost said in a statement he supports the discipline. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Eric Lee Jr.rSr/2020, Nebraska, 5-10, 210 (DS#999 SS) + More +

As happy as he was with his defense, Scott Frost was in no mood to celebrate after Nebraska's opener against South Alabama. Frost's coaching resume is built on offense, and he didn't like what he saw in the No. 24 Cornhuskers' 35-21 victory Saturday. "That's as anemic an offensive effort I've been a part of in a long time," Frost said. "That's not the offense I've been seeing all fall camp. We have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what happened today. I give credit to South Alabama for the coaching job they did. Their kids came in and fought." Two defensive touchdowns and one on special teams bailed out an offense that generated only 276 yards, including just 66 in the second half, and never established a ground game against an opponent from the Sun Belt Conference that ranked 101st against the run last season.

"It's no secret we played very poor," quarterback Adrian Martinez said. "It's probably the worst we've played in a long time, and it's not acceptable. We're happy we got the win. Our defense played great, special teams made some plays, but offensively we need to be a lot better. It's pretty simple." The five-touchdown favorite Huskers led only 14-7 at halftime, and the anxiety at Memorial Stadium was palpable. But the defense had five takeaways, the biggest one Eric Lee Jr.'s 38-yard interception return for a touchdown, and JD Spielman ran back a punt 76 yards to make it a three-touchdown game early in the third quarter. - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - Oliver MartinrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-0, 199 (DS#113 WR) + More +

Michigan transfer receiver Oliver Martin has been cleared to play this season for Iowa, starting with Saturday's opener against Miami (Ohio). The 20th-ranked Hawkeyes said Wednesday that Martin has been approved for immediate eligibility by the NCAA and the Big Ten. Martin, a graduate of Iowa City West High, caught 11 passes for the Wolverines in 2018. But a change at offensive coordinator and a desire to return home led Martin to transfer to Iowa this summer. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said this week Martin would play if he was ruled eligible for this weekend's game. - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - Andre HuntrSo/2025, Nebraska, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Nebraska has suspended wide receiver Andre Hunt and tight end Katerian Legrone indefinitely. Offensive coordinator Troy Walters announced Wednesday that Hunt and Legrone are being held out of all team activities. Walters declined to comment on the reason for the suspensions. Hunt is a redshirt freshman from Palm Dale, California, who appeared in two games last season and went into preseason practice in line for significant playing time. Legrone is a redshirt freshman from Atlanta who played in three games last season and was expected to be a reserve tight end this year.   08/06/19 - Chase UrbachrSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-2, 212 (DS#22 LS) + More +

2019 PRESEASON INAUGURAL PATRICK MANNELLY LONG SNAPPER AWARD WATCH LIST: Chase Urbach, Nebraska,...The Mannelly Award was created this year to honor college football's top senior long snapper. It was named in honor of Patrick Mannelly, who played 16 seasons with the Chicago Bears and is the franchise's all-time leader with 245 games played.

Urbach moved into the starting long snapper role last season and handled the snapping duties for Nebraska's punt unit in each of the final 10 games of 2018. As the long snapper, he helped Isaac Armstrong post the ninth-best punting average (43.6) in school history in his first season as NU's punter. Urbach also tallied three tackles, including a pair of stops against nationally ranked Michigan and recovered a fumble in the victory over Illinois.

The semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 16 with the finalists being announced on Nov. 23. The winner and trophy presentation will be on Dec. 14. The Patrick Mannelly Award is proudly presented by Bernie's Book Bank, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing book ownership among at-risk children. - Nebraska Football

  08/05/19 - Dedrick MillsrSr/2021, Nebraska, 5-10, 217 (DS#40 RB) + More +

Dedrick Mills, the new Nebraska running back who already has NCAA Division I playing experience, continues to impress his teammates, and now it comes after four days of official fall practice. A transfer from Garden City (Kansas) Community College, Mills has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He rushed for 1,358 yards and 19 touchdowns last season at Garden City. He was the No. 1-ranked junior college running back according to 247Sports. In 2016, Mills rushed for 771 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games at Georgia Tech, capping the year with a 31-carry, 169-yard performance against Kentucky to earn MVP honors in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

Husker defensive lineman Darrion Daniels has been impressed with Mills. "Mills gets it done," Daniels said after practice on Monday morning. "I had a little pent-up aggression against him the first day because we were in helmets and that's it, and he was running through the hole like we got full pads on. That's the type of intensity we need for the defense to get better. And him running hard forces all the other running backs to run hard, and so when you got running backs running hard you got linebackers having to push harder, too, and it's like a domino effect every time somebody steps up their level of intensity." - Lincoln Journal Star

  08/03/19 - Lamar JacksonSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-2, 208 (DS#24 CB) + More +

Although Nebraska returns every corner from its 2018 roster, it loses three of the safeties from last season's four-man rotation in departed seniors Aaron Williams, Tre Neal and Antonio Reed. "Everybody's just trying to recreate their destiny in a positive way and just make sure they do everything they can do on this football field to improve the team and to help themselves when it comes to the next level," Jackson said. "A lot of guys have NFL dreams, so I feel like that's one of our biggest motivators - to push each other and really make sure we give our best."

A native of Elk Grove, California, Jackson's NFL dreams are realistic. That's essentially what he heard from Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and defensive coordinator Erik Chinander the Sunday morning following NU's 42-28 home loss to Purdue on Sept. 29. Jackson was benched during that game for talking trash to the Boilermaker sideline and drawing a flag. - Lincoln Journal Star

2019 PRESEASON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST: Mohamed Barry, Nebraska,...Barry, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker, returns to anchor the Huskers’ defense after an outstanding junior campaign. The Grayson, Ga., native led the Huskers and ranked second in the Big Ten with 112 tackles, including 55 solo tackles, and added 11 tackles for loss and two sacks from his inside linebacker position. His 112 tackles were the most by a Husker since NFL All-Pro Lavonte David totaled 133 stops in 2011.

Barry, a 2018 All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and media, led NU in tackles in nine of 12 games, including seven double-figure efforts. He posted a career-high 12 tackles against Colorado and had 11 stops six other times as a junior.   07/20/19 - Jack StollrSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-4, 247 (DS#13 TE) + More +

2019 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: Jack Stoll, JR, Nebraska,...Stoll led Nebraska’s tight ends with 21 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2018, setting career highs in each category. The Colorado native had a strong finish to the season, totaling 11 receptions, including two touchdown grabs, in the season’s final five games, including hauling in a career-long 37-yard catch against Bethune-Cookman and tying his career high with four receptions in the season finale at Iowa.

The 6-4, 260-pound Stoll also played a key role in a Husker rushing attack that ranked as the nation’s second-most improved unit in 2018. Overall, Stoll started all 12 games last season for a Husker offense that ranked 25th nationally in total offense, averaging 456.2 yards per game. - Nebraska
