  07/18/20 - Dicaprio BootlerSr/2021, Nebraska, 5-10, 180 (DS#44 CB) + More +

As Travis Fisher gave a quick breakdown of the top of his room, a trio of seniors and a junior in the Nebraska secondary, a similar theme quickly emerged. Simply put, the Huskers are primed to have a versatile, veteran secondary in 2020 and a group that Fisher has a deep trust in. Senior Dicaprio Bootle? "At this point, Dicaprio is a grown man," Fisher told the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program Thursday evening. "Everything he does, he handles it like a grown man." That, according to Fisher, includes leading the position group and working out sometimes three or four times per day. Not only that, but Fisher says he can play Bootle at any position in the secondary, something evidenced by the fact that he moved from corner to safety down the stretch in 2019. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/12/20 - Ethan PiperrSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-2, 305 (DS#999 OG) + More +

A redshirt freshman from Norfolk Catholic, Piper is among a handful of players who could be involved in August in an intense battle for the starting job at left guard. Senior Boe Wilson and junior Trent Hixson each have plenty of starting experience at guard. Junior Broc Bando could be prominent in the mix. But don't count out the 6-foot-4, 300-pound Piper, who may be the best athlete of the bunch. In fact, Piper arrived on campus last summer apparently set to begin his career as a defensive lineman. He had 103 tackles and eight sacks as a high school senior. But Husker coaches before preseason camp last summer moved him to offense. The initial plan was for him to compete at center. NU offensive line coach Greg Austin has described Piper as "a very, very cerebral kid." So, he's smart and extremely athletic for a human his size. Yes, intriguing. Iowa apparently thought the same. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/09/20 - Brenden JaimesSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-5, 298 (DS#24 OT) + More +

Jaimes is the first of several players on this list who would rank much higher were it ranking the most important on the roster rather than the most intriguing. Jaimes anchors what should be a deep Nebraska offensive line and is poised to become a member of a rare club as a four-year starter up front. The Austin, Texas, native stepped in as a true freshman in 2017, starting the fourth game of the season. He hasn't looked back since, cracking the lineup in each of Nebraska's past 33 games.

The intrigue, really, has nothing to do with the depth chart. Jaimes is anchored at left tackle and will be counted on there again this fall. Instead, the intrigue is more about how much Jaimes can make of his final collegiate season. He talked openly before the spring about wanting to take a bigger leadership role. In fact, it was one of the reasons he decided to return for his senior season. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/08/20 - Caleb TannorrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-3, 237 (DS#85 OLB) + More +

Nebraska coaches have been high on the athletic package the third-year player brings to the table, but he has not yet turned that into an every-down role. On the edge, Tannor doesn't have the ideal build for an every-down player at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, but he's shown flashes of disruptive ability. Part of the question is what his role will be. Will he be asked to hold up in run support often? Is he a pass-rush specialist? In addition, he'll be playing under first-year outside linebackers coach Mike Dawson, who before spring ball talked about Tannor and used the word that seems like it will be the most important indicator of where the Georgia native goes from here. "He's got to develop consistency in everything he's doing," Dawson said. "He's going to have to help us, and he's going to have to help us early," defensive coordinator Erik Chinander added. "And if he can't, you know, once you get to be that junior age, if you can't help anymore, some young guy has to get a shot." - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/16/20 - Matt FarniokrSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-5, 311 (DS#29 OG) + More +

At the outset of spring ball, Nebraska planned to give redshirt freshman tackle Bryce Benhart a good, long look at right tackle. The plan was to move senior Matt Farniok from that spot to left guard, giving NU a senior tandem on the left side with Farniok and left tackle Brenden Jaimes. With most of spring ball scuttled and fewer reps now standing between a young player like Benhart and a potential regular season, though, that plan has changed to some degree. Frost says 'invaluable' player leadership has Huskers in a good spot despite coronavirus disruption.

"Through talking during this time, I think we're going to probably start (Farniok) out at right guard, just expecting there to be a younger player at right tackle potentially," Nebraska coach Scott Frost said. "Having a veteran on the left side with Jaimes and a veteran with Matt on the right side of the line will help whoever's playing left guard and whoever's playing right tackle. "Also, it will give us the ability to move Matt back out to right tackle a lot easier if he's playing on the right side." - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/30/20 - Jared BubakrSr/2022, Nebraska, 6-5, 240 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Jared Bubak, a Lincoln Christian graduate and former Arizona State tight end, announced Saturday on Twitter that he's going to grad transfer to Nebraska as a tight end and for his final season. "I just didn't want to be living with that what-if," Bubak, who at one point was verbally committed to NU in high school before flipping to Arizona State. "What if I had gone to Nebraska? So I always knew for my last year I wanted to come back home and see what happens."

Bubak has been in Lincoln the past couple of months during the coronavirus pandemic, which has largely shut down college athletics, and he said he got in touch with Nebraska coaches about a month ago. "I literally just sent a (direct message) to one of the coaches and said I wanted to walk on," said Bubak, who didn't expect a scholarship and just was hoping for a spot. NU worked with him in recent weeks to get the paperwork done and now he's reporting on Monday, the first day campus is open for voluntary workouts. Bubak is the third known graduate transfer walk-on the Huskers have added this summer, joining South Dakota wide receiver Levi Falck and LSU kicker Connor Culp. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/15/20 - Connor CulprSr/2022, Nebraska, 5-11, 180 (DS#999 K) + More +

Nebraska is adding another walk-on kicker to its ranks, but this one has some high-level Division I experience. Former LSU kicker Connor Culp is set to join the Huskers as a graduate transfer, he confirmed to the Journal Star on Friday. Culp is expected to be a walk-on for the fall semester. Culp was the Tigers' starting kicker in 2017 and made 11-of-16 field goals and 20-of-23 extra points, a freshman season highlighted by a 42-yard game-winner against Auburn. He split duties late in the year, though, and then lost the job to a pair of standouts in Cole Tracy (2018) and Cade York (2019). Rivals first mentioned that Culp was planning to walk on at Nebraska. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/11/20 - Dicaprio BootlerSr/2021, Nebraska, 5-10, 180 (DS#44 CB) + More +

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost recently added a pair of defensive analysts to his football staff. The Huskers have added former NFL assistant Bill McGovern and college assistant Bobby Maffei as analysts. Both are listed on the school website's staff directory, though it was not immediately clear how long either has been on staff. McGovern spent 2016-19 with the New York Giants, working last year alongside NU outside linebackers coach Mike Dawson. Before that, Dawson and McGovern also spent three seasons together on the Philadelphia Eagles staff, and coached together at Boston College.

Overall, McGovern has spent the past seven seasons as a full-time position coach in the NFL between New York and Philadelphia, but was not retained when the Giants fired Pat Shurmur and hired Joe Judge. Clearly, though, he and Dawson have several years of history together. Maffei spent the 2019 season at Richmond, where he was the Spiders' special teams coordinator and a defensive assistant coach. - Lincoln Journal Star

  04/13/20 - Darrion DanielsSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-3, 311 (DS#32 DT) + More +

Former Nebraska defensive lineman Darrion Daniels, who's currently in his hometown of Dallas awaiting the April 23-25 NFL Draft, has comforting words for Husker fans concerned about a drop-off along the line. "I feel that being with coach (Tony) Tuioti, it's going to help those guys reach a level of football that they didn't even know they have," Daniels said Monday. "I've worked out with every single one of the returning linemen and have seen what they're good at and what they're not good at. "I just feel like they're going to shock a lot of people." He said his brother, junior Damion Daniels, is training in Lincoln. In doing some pre-NFL Draft work last week, I was told 13 teams have been in contact with the 6-foot-4, 340-pound Darrion Daniels, who had 34 tackles, including 1½ sacks last season. He had dinner with the Ravens after NU's March 12 Pro Day. He's had FaceTime meetings with the Cardinals, Bears and Jaguars. - Lincoln Journal Star

  03/15/20 - Khalil DavisrSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-1, 308 (DS#14 DT) + More +

Nebraska's football program essentially failed defensive linemen Khalil Davis and Carlos Davis. NU did them a disservice. Can anybody really dispute that? They played for four different position coaches and three defensive coordinators at Nebraska. Who would sign up for that? How could anyone have expected them to reach their collegiate potential in that scenario? It's why I find myself cheering for them to make it in the NFL -- and it appears they're making a nice push in that regard. Do NFL scouts and front-office types ask the twins about the ridiculous amount of coaching turnover they experienced in college? "Some of them don't really know," Khalil Davis said Thursday after turning in an impressive performance during Nebraska's Pro Day. "Some ask, and then they're surprised by it. I don't tell them unless they ask. But I'm sure if they do their research on us, they probably know about it." - Lincoln Journal Star

  03/12/20 - Carlos DavisrSr/2020, Nebraska, 6-2, 313 (DS#20 DT) + More +

Former Nebraska defensive lineman Carlos Davis had a simple, albeit sensible, plan for Nebraska's Pro Day. "I really just wanted coaches to see me do drills," he told reporters Thursday. "That's really the main thing." Two weeks ago at the NFL Combine, Davis and twin brother Khalil Davis opened eyes with impressive 40-yard dash times. The 6-foot-1, 308-pound Khalil Davis ran the 40 in 4.75 seconds in Indianapolis, the sixth-best time recorded by a defensive lineman. According to ESPN, Davis' time was the fastest at the combine by a D-lineman weighing more than 300 pounds since at least 2006.

Meanwhile, Carlos Davis ran a 04.82, placing him in a tie for ninth among defensive linemen. The 6-2, 313-pound Carlos Davis also recorded 27 reps in the bench at the combine, tying for 10th. In other words, much of his heavy lifting was finished entering Nebraska's Pro day, held in front of 28 scouts from 22 NFL teams. "Although we ran good (at the combine), it taxed me," Carlos Davis said. "I kind of strained myself a little trying to run that fast, so I took it easy at the combine and didn't do a few of the drills." Neither Carlos Davis nor his brother ran the 40 Thursday. It simply wasn't necessary. "We were trying to get healthy and come out here and do drills," Carlos Davis said. - Lincoln Journal Star

  03/12/20 - JoJo DomannrSr/2022, Nebraska, 6-1, 230 (DS#7 OLB) + More +

Nebraska outside linebacker JoJo Domann's explosiveness on the field has become evident to anyone who's watched him play in college. He's a ball of energy and often brings it full-force, sometimes resulting in big plays. But his coaches want more production from the 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior. "I think he can be a lot better, and that's something I've talked to him about," Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said earlier this week as the Huskers' spring practice season started. Since Matt Lubick joined the Huskers in early January, head coach Scott Frost has consistently used the words "organization" and "detail."

A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Domann was among the most productive players for Nebraska's defense last season, ranking second on the team in tackles for loss (11), pass breakups (six) and forced fumbles (two). His 52 tackles were fifth-best on the squad. One could say Domann's switch to outside linebacker - after playing primarily safety during his first three years on campus - was a success in an individual sense. Now that Domann has reached his senior year, and has a stronger handle on his role, Chinander will ask more of him. Chinander wants Domann to be more verbal in helping position teammates. What's more, the coach wants fewer mental errors. - Lincoln Journal Star
