  12/11/20 - Cam Taylor-BrittSr/2022, Nebraska, 5-11, 196 (DS#10 CB) + More +

Last week, Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said he thought teams had been mostly staying away from throwing the ball toward junior cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. On Saturday against Purdue, Taylor-Britt added another play to his highlight reel, rising high in one-on-one coverage against star sophomore receiver David Bell down the sideline to knock a pass away. It looked a lot like a similar play he made against the similarly talented Jahan Dotson of Penn State earlier this fall. Taylor-Britt, a Montgomery, Alabama, native, also was involved in Purdue's biggest play of the game when he and senior Marquel Dismuke collided while trying to play a deep attempt for Bell that turned into an 89-yard touchdown. And sure, he dropped an interception in the fourth quarter, too. But coaches and teammates alike say Taylor-Britt is playing at a high level on the edge for the Huskers.

"Cam is playing at an elite level," senior cornerback Dicaprio Bootle said Monday. "He's a heavy competitor. Somebody who, no matter what it is, we could be flipping a coin and he's going to want to get in on that coin flip and be able to call whether it's heads or tails. That's just a testament to the guy that he is. "He's took this year and took the time off to really help himself grow as a player. I always thought the highest of Cam and thought he was a great player, regardless of if he might have had some miscues in prior years. Who doesn't? But that guy right there, as somebody that's younger than me, I really admire his work and I really admire the things that he does on the field and just the player that he's evolved into over his time here. "Down the line, if he continues to do what he's doing, it'll pay off for him big time." - Lincoln Journal Star

  12/10/20 - Turner CorcoranrSr/2026, Nebraska, 6-6, 310 (DS#80 OT) + More +

Freshman left tackle Turner Corcoran hasn't played much this season, but that in and of itself is a good thing. He's behind steady veteran Brenden Jaimes, who on Saturday set a Nebraska offensive line record by starting his 39th consecutive game. Corcoran, the former four-star prospect from Lawrence, Kansas, is taking what amounts to an apprentice year. He's played in a pair of games, studied Jaimes' game, and will be in position to compete to take over as NU's blind-side protector in 2021 if Jaimes heads off to the NFL.

"Personally, I think he's more mature than I was when I was in his shoes," Jaimes said of Corcoran this week. "I think he'll be a great asset to the team next year, as he is this year. Whatever role he fills, I think he'll be able to do it to the best of his ability." Offensive line coach Greg Austin and head coach Scott Frost have both complimented Corcoran's work since he arrived on campus back in January. "Coach Austin likes him, Coach Frost likes him, along with all the other young guys," Jaimes said. "I think they're doing a great job competing every day in practice. But for him, I think if he has to take that left tackle next year, I'm going to do my best to kind of give him all the advice that the older guys gave me and just pass down a legacy of being a left tackle at Nebraska." - Lincoln Journal Star

  12/10/20 - Brenden JaimesSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-5, 298 (DS#24 OT) + More +

Jaimes is playing at a very high level, according to Dominic Raiola, an All-American at Nebraska in 2000 who was a starting center for the Detroit Lions from 2002-14. Retired and living in Fort Worth, Texas, Raiola started 203 games in the NFL. Consequently, he understands precisely what it takes to play in the trenches against the world's best linemen. Raiola watches Nebraska games closely and obviously pays close attention to the offensive line. He says Jaimes is "definitely" capable of playing in the NFL, in part because he likely could play either tackle or guard.

"You watch his tenacity, you see how big he is - and he's going to get stronger before the combine and the draft," Raiola said Monday during "Early Break" on 93.7 FM. "But the guy just dominates people. If you turn on the film, he shows up. I watch it close, and I watch him close. I definitely think he has what it takes to get in (the NFL). But it's all about opportunity and seizing your opportunity when you get in there. But I certainly think he's got a shot." - Lincoln Journal Star

  12/02/20 - *Cam JurgensrJr/2022, Nebraska, 6-3, 304 (DS#2 C) + More +

Scott Frost remains confident in sophomore center Cameron Jurgens and has no intentions of changing centers. The Husker football coach said he is not planning to move Jurgens despite the Beatrice graduate continuing to struggle with snaps during a 26-20 loss at Iowa on Friday. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Jurgens had five off-the-mark snaps in the first half and was pulled midway through a second-quarter drive before returning to the field for a clean second half.

"We need to get it fixed, so we're going to get as much help and as many ideas as we can to get it fixed," Frost said during Monday's Zoom media session. "He's too good a player not to have on the field, he's too good of a player to even consider moving him out of that role. "He's smart, he's extremely athletic and he's exceptionally explosive. He's got the skill set to be really special." But, Frost added, Jurgens can't continue to struggle. - Lincoln Journal Star

  11/26/20 - Zavier BettsrJr/2025, Nebraska, 6-2, 200 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Zavier Betts certainly made quite a splash in a win against Penn State when he took a fly sweep 45 yards for a touchdown. The freshman wide receiver from Bellevue West, though, has something else working for him through limited action in three games this fall: When the ball gets thrown his way, it turns into positive yards. The numbers are still small, but Betts has been targeted five times so far in his career and he has five catches for 80 yards. The yardage is good for third on the team, trailing only sophomore receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and junior tight end Austin Allen, both of whom have been targeted far more frequently. Betts is a big target, literally, at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, and he's given the quarterbacks safe, easy throws underneath so far, besides his star turn against PSU. - Lincoln Journal Star

  10/23/20 - Travis VokolekrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-6, 259 (DS#27 TE) + More +

Travis Vokolek's long wait is nearly over. The last time the Nebraska junior tight end played in a football game that counted, he hauled in four catches for a career-best 69 yards and a touchdown for Rutgers against Michigan State. That was Nov. 24, 2018. On Saturday, 23 months to the day later, he will finally be back in action. This time, it will be as a member of the Cornhuskers' veteran tight end group. "It means a lot to finally be able to get out there with the guys and take on Ohio State," Vokolek said Tuesday. The Springfield, Missouri, native chatted with reporters for the first time since he signed with NU last summer. When he first verbally committed to the Huskers over Iowa and others, he said he wanted to be recruited by Nebraska out of high school, but wasn't and eventually signed with the Scarlet Knights.

Now he's got a chance to make an impact in Lincoln even though NU has senior Jack Stoll and fellow juniors Austin Allen and Kurt Rafdal back, too. "We're expecting him to come in and be a dominant force in the run game and a dominant force in the pass game, just like Jack Stoll and Austin Allen performed last year," tight ends coach Sean Beckton said earlier this month. Vokolek is listed at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds and was known previously as mostly a receiving threat at the position, which the Huskers have been looking for more of essentially since Scott Frost took over the program. "When I first got here, knowing I was going to have to sit out, one of my goals was to really learn a lot over that year and not waste that year on the scout team," he said. "So I was still doing the drills, footwork and stuff, really working on blocking and then route running as well. I think I've learned a lot over the last year and gained a lot from it." - Lincoln Journal Star

  10/23/20 - Dicaprio BootlerSr/2021, Nebraska, 5-10, 180 (DS#44 CB) + More +

Dicaprio Bootle didn't know why he was a "nobody." Maybe it was his height. Maybe it was his weight. But he wasn't getting the big-time scholarship offers he wanted as a high schooler growing up in Miami. "I don't really know why that was," the Nebraska cornerback said Monday. "I just knew that I was gonna keep working and let it happen, put it all in God's hands and let it work for me." Bootle was discovered at a satellite camp in Miami. He went because Rutgers coaches were attending it, and they had expressed interest in him. Bootle clocked a 4.3-second 40-yard dash, which turned the heads of more than just Rutgers' coaches. A flurry of offers came in for Bootle, but one rose to the top. Nebraska. "I was nobody," he said. "I mean, I came in 2016, nobody really gave me a chance... I had to wait my turn, I had to sit down and understand that there were guys that were here before me. There are guys that were a little more seasoned before me." - Omaha World Herald

  10/23/20 - Nick HenrichrSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Changing positions on the fly is never a simple proposition. Nebraska redshirt freshman linebacker Nick Henrich is doing just that as camp proceeds and game preparations take shape for Saturday's season opener against Ohio State. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder has been working at outside linebacker for a couple of weeks at least and, according to his coaches, he's picking it up quickly. The reason for the late switch is two-fold: NU has question marks outside and is a little bit more settled inside with seniors Collin Miller and Will Honas, and sophomore Luke Reimer forming a likely three-man rotation. Not only that, but the staff feels like it needs Henrich involved, plain and simple.

"I think, first off, he's a smart kid that can take coaching, and just overall he's a football player," defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said. "No matter where you put him, no matter what position you're going to put him in, he's a football player. He understands spacing, he understands leverage, he understands assignment and he's a tough kid. "He loves Nebraska, first and foremost, he loves the game of football, so he's going to do whatever he has to do to get on the field. Whether that's learn a new position midweek or study it from the day he got here. Inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud said that Henrich was on pace to have a significant role last year as a true freshman before he was bit by the injury bug. The Omaha Burke graduate was limited to one game - he played primarily special teams against Wisconsin in November - and continued to deal with some injury issues this offseason. - Lincoln Journal Star

  10/23/20 - Matt FarniokrSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-5, 311 (DS#29 OG) + More +

Two-time captain Matt Farniok likes his new position at guard. "The biggest adjustment was everything kind of happens faster," he said. "There's not quite as much space between you and a (defensive) tackle versus you and a D-end, and I enjoy it, personally. Everything happens faster, and it's a lot more of a power type of game, which is a lot more fun to me." Like two of the other captains, Farniok sat on the scout team his first year, but then quickly saw time, appearing in seven games and starting four games his redshirt freshman year. In those four starts, two were at right tackle and two were at right guard. During his sophomore and junior seasons, he only saw time at right tackle, but, for this season, NU coaches moved him back to right guard. His right tackle replacement, Bryce Benhart, will also be expected to play solid minutes his second year on campus. "He has all the tools and all - everything you need to get the job done," Farniok said of Benhart. "And I mean, especially being a young guy, you just kind of got to build that confidence up and understand that you're there for a reason, you've earned that spot." - Omaha World Herald
