Navy football's ongoing saga with the NCAA transfer portal has taken another turn as a second player in the span of a week has changed his mind about leaving the academy. Cornerback Michael McMorris has decided to pull his name out of the transfer portal and remain at the Naval Academy for the 2020-2021 school year. McMorris has been reinstated to Navy's official roster, and an athletic department spokesman confirmed he is part of the team. The Capital reported in mid-March that McMorris had entered the transfer portal and he seemingly confirmed the news himself by posting a link to the story to his Twitter feed. Having just completed his sophomore year of school, McMorris could have left the Naval Academy without penalty.

McMorris has completed the spring semester at the academy and the coaching staff is hopeful he will be eligible to play during the upcoming season, whenever that is held. "I think Mikey went through a rough patch and was struggling with some of the same things every midshipman struggles with," Navy defensive coordinator Brian Newberry said on Thursday. "I always thought there was a chance Mikey would stay, and I'm really glad he did. He's a really good football player and will help win football games." McMorris made the decision to remain at the academy one week after safety Chelen Garnes elected to leave. The Capital reported last week that Garnes, who played in all 13 games as a freshman, reentered the transfer portal. - Capital Times

Malcolm Perry has done everything in his power to position himself as a National Football League prospect. Unfortunately, due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, Navy's record-setting quarterback was not able to do as much as planned to impress scouts and general managers. Perry was supposed to audition for NFL teams during the Navy Pro Day on March 25. That was canceled after the Naval Academy announced the Brigade of Midshipmen would not be returning to campus following spring break. Perry, 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, had also been invited to attend combines held by the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans at each organization's respective facilities, and there were some other NFL franchises that planned to send scouts to the Naval Academy to conduct a private workout. All those sessions were canceled.

There is no telling how the inability to scrutinize Perry more closely will impact the decision-making of general managers going into the NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday. "It's definitely frustrating to miss out on opportunities to get in front of NFL teams and show what I can do," Perry told Baltimore Sun Media this week. "Hopefully, the scouts have seen enough to have a good idea of who I am and what I am capable of as a player." - Capital Times

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Malcolm Perry, RB, Navy,...Perry rushed for an Army-Navy Game record 304 yards and two touchdowns in Navy's 31-7 rout of Army as he helped bring the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy back to Annapolis for the 16th time in school history. Perry capped his career in the Liberty Bowl rushing for 213 yards and 28 carries in Navy's 20-17 win over Kansas State. Bijan Nichols kicked a 23-yard field goal with two seconds remaining and No. 21 Navy capitalized on a fourth-down gamble in the final minute to beat Kansas State 20-17 in the Liberty Bowl on Tuesday. A Navy team with the nation's top-ranked rushing attack set up the winning score by completing a halfback option pass with less than 30 seconds left. The Midshipmen snapped the ball on fourth-and-3 from the Kansas State 46. Quarterback Malcolm Perry pitched to C.J. Williams, and he threw downfield to a wide-open Chance Warren for a 41-yard gain. Perry, who rushed for 213 yards, spiked the ball with 5 seconds left to set up Nichols' field goal. Nichols had missed a 38-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter.

The victory enabled Navy (11-2) to tie a program record for wins and ensured the Midshipmen will finish a season in the AP Top 25 for just the third time in the last 56 years. Navy finished 18th in 2015 — when it also won 11 games - and was 24th in 2004. Navy went 3-10 last year and matched the second-biggest season-to-season improvement in win-loss record of any team in Football Bowl Subdivision history. Hawaii owns the record by going 9-4 in 1999 after finishing 0-12 in 1998. The Mids made that dramatic turnaround thanks largely to Perry, who capped a brilliant senior season with 28 carries and a touchdown pass. Perry ran for 2,017 yards this season to set a Football Bowl Subdivision record for yards rushing by quarterback. The record had been owned by Jordan Lynch, who ran for 1,920 yards for Northern Illinois in 2013. - AP College Football

Navy used a trick play to help reverse a rare losing streak against Army and Malcolm Perry ran for a career-high 304 yards and two touchdowns in front of President Donald Trump in the No. 21 Mids' 31-7 victory Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. Navy (9-2, No. 23, CFP) won the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for the 16th time and snapped a three-game losing streak to Army in the 120th game between the service academies. Navy leads the series 61-52-7. The Black Knights (5-8) were trying to win four straight games in the Army-Navy series for the first time since 1993 to 1996. Perry, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior quarterback, helped the fleet of foot Navy offense run away with the game with another game for the record book.

He ran for a 55-yard TD in the first half, added a 44-yard scamper and set Navy season records in yards rushing and total 100-yard games. But his most GIF-worthy play didn't end up with his name on the scoring sheet. He took the snap at the 1-yard line, ran to his left and handed off the ball to receiver Chance Warren who threw to Jamale Carothers for the score and a 14-7 lead. It was Navy's twist on the Philly Special - the Naval Special? - at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles. It was Navy's only yard passing of the game. Perry was the game's MVP. Perry did not attempt a pass attempt and Army surprise starter Christian Anderson threw just one pass. At one point in a tight game against No. 21 SMU Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry approached coach Ken Niumatalolo about giving someone else the ball. Not a chance. Perry found a seam and scampered 70 yards with just over six minutes remaining to break a tie and Navy beat the Mustangs 35-28 on Saturday. It was the culmination of a banner day for Perry, who generated 357 yards of total offense. He finished with 195 yards rushing on 38 carries with two touchdowns and completed 9 of 15 passes for 162 yards and another score. "He actually told me at one time, `Coach, you have to give me a break, man. Give somebody else the ball,' " Niumatalolo said. "I was like, `Suck it up, we need you.' I didn't realize he carried the ball 38 times. . All I could see was (Perry) in my head. He was going to carry us."

The Midshipmen still have a shot at winning the West Division crown of the American Athletic Conference outright should No. 18 Memphis falter in the regular-season finale against No. 17 Cincinnati. The Tigers own the tiebreaker by virtue of their 35-23 victory over Navy on Sept. 26. CJ Sanders had a 100-yard kickoff return for SMU (9-2, 5-2), tied for the longest in the 60-year history of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. After trailing 21-10 at the half, the Midshipmen (8-2, 6-1) cut into the margin on a 1-yard plunge by Perry and a 25-yard field goal by Bijan Nichols on their first two possessions of the third quarter. Navy moved into The Associated Press college football poll at No. 25, giving the American Athletic Conference four ranked teams, more than all but the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference. With nine ranked teams off this weekend, including four of the top five, there was little movement throughout the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. LSU is No. 1 for a second consecutive week and Alabama is No. 2. The Tigers and Crimson Tide on Saturday will play the first regular-season 1-2 game since the same two did it in 2011.

Navy joins fellow AAC members No. 17 Cincinnati, No. 19 Memphis and No. 23 SMU in the Top 25. Four ranked teams matches a high for the 7-year-old American, which was born from the collapse of the Big East. "UCF was the top vote-getter outside the Top 25," AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said Sunday. "It think it validates what we've been trying to do. Our goal is depth." Aresco has pushed for the American to be considered along-side the Power Five, branding the AAC a P6 conference. Quarterback Malcolm Perry and Navy have inserted themselves into the mix for a New Year's Six bowl game. Perry ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 165 yards and another score Friday night in leading the Midshipmen to a 56-10 rout of UConn on national television. It was the fifth straight 100-yard rushing game for the senior, who eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for the third consecutive season. The win keeps the Midshipmen (7-1, 5-1 American) within striking distance of undefeated No. 15 SMU in the AAC West Division, with games against Notre Dame and the Mustangs on the horizon. "We haven't done much yet," said Perry. "We've got some great competitors coming up in a few weeks. All we've done so far is put ourselves in a great position."

Perry scored on his first carry, spinning past the line of scrimmage and going 58 yards down the numbers on the right side of the field. He also had a 58-yard touchdown pass in the first half, hitting sophomore receiver Mychal Cooper down the middle. It was one of just six passes thrown by Perry, who completed three of them, all for more than 30 yards. "He walks around like he's a plebe; the most humble kid," said Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo.
