Fullback Daba Fonfana rushed for 114 yards, and Navy beat No. 17 UCF 17-14 on Saturday without completing a pass. Navy (4-7, 4-4 American Athletic) dominated possession of the ball and gained 248 yards, all on the ground. Xavier Arline threw incomplete on the team's only passing attempt. The loss dropped UCF (8-3, 5-2) out of first place in the AAC. Mikey Keene replaced quarterback John Rhys Plumlee in the second half and immediately led the Knights to their only touchdown of the game. Keene completed his first three passes for 79 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Javon Baker. Plumlee then passed to Baker for the 2-point conversion, tying it at 14 early in the third quarter.

John Marshall forced Keene's fumble on the Knights' next possession. It was recovered by Colin Ramos at the UCF 34, and Bijan Nichols' 45-yard field goal lifted Navy to a 17-14 lead with 8:22 left in the third. Navy had a 14-6 halftime lead after two long touchdown drives. The Midshipmen took a 7-0 lead on Arline's quarterback sneak with 8:20 left in the first quarter, completing a 75-yard drive. Field goals of 21 and 31 yards by Colton Boomer made it 7-6, but Navy drove 84 yards to another touchdown late in the first half. Vincent Terrell Jr. ran it in from the 8 with 1:33 left. Plumlee, a senior who had led UCF's ninth-ranked offense for most of the season, completed 11 of 18 passes for 107 yards and threw a long interception on the final play of the half. Quarterback Xavier Arline scored on a 23-yard run in overtime and Navy outlasted Temple 27-20 on Saturday. Dashaun Peele then intercepted E.J. Warner in the end zone on fourth-and-11 from the 13 to wrap up the game. Daniel Davies sandwiched two field goals around a 15-yard touchdown run by Daba Fofana to give Navy (3-5, 3-3 American Athletic Conference) a 13-0 lead after one quarter. Temple (2-6, 0-4) closed to within 13-10 when Layton Jordan forced and recovered a fumble by Arline in the end zone for a touchdown just 1:11 into the third quarter.

Anton Hall answered with a 16-yard scoring run and the Midshipmen took a 20-10 lead into the final quarter. Warner, a freshman and the son of Hall-of-Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, hit Amad Anderson Jr. for a 20-yard score and Camden Price kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:08 left to play to send it to overtime. Navy, which attempted just two passes (both incomplete), rushed for 224 yards on 70 carries, led by the 63 of Fofana. Daba Fofana ran for 113 of his 159 yards and three touchdowns in the first half to help Navy cruise to a 53-21 victory over Tulsa on Saturday. Freshman Nathan Kent broke loose off a reverse for a 70-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for Navy. It was Kent's first collegiate play. Fofana added scoring runs from 47, 15, and 11 yards in the second quarter as Navy built a 36-14 lead at halftime.

Navy (2-3, 2-1 American Athletic Conference) rushed 69 times for 455 yards and completed just 2 of 8 passes for 35 yards. Vincent Terrell Jr. added 93 yards rushing and a score. Kent finished with 70 yards. Davis Brin tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the first half that included a 76-yarder to Keylon Stokes for Tulsa (2-4, 0-2). Malachai Jones also made a leaping, two-handed grab between two defenders while falling into the end zone in the first quarter. Brin was 20-of-31 passing for 284 yards. Daniel Davies, who came into the game without a field-goal attempt this season, made all three of his tries Saturday night, including a 36-yarder in the second overtime and Navy beat East Carolina 23-20. The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime before Davies connected again. Owen Daffer's 37-yard attempt went wide left. ECU (2-1, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) had the ball in the final minutes, but Tyler Fletcher intercepted Holton Ahlers at the Navy 35 with 25 seconds left to send the game to overtime. The score was 3-3 headed into the fourth quarter when both teams scored two touchdowns apiece.

ECU tied the game at 17-all with eight minutes left when a Navy defender tried to jump a route on a short pass but missed and Isaiah Winstead went down the left sideline for a 67-yard score. Right after ECU had taken at 10-3 lead, Tai Lavatai found Vincent Terrell II 15 yards down the middle and Terrell turned it into a 65-yard score with just under 12 minutes left. On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Eavan Gibbons recovered a fumble at the ECU 25. That turnover turned into a 7-yard TD by Anton Hall Jr. for a 17-10 lead. Ahlers threw a 14-yard TD pass to Ryan Jones for a 10-3 lead to complete an eight-play, 70-yard drive that began when Navy turned the ball over on downs. Ahlers, ECU's fifth-year starting quarterback, became the all-time total yards leader for the AAC with 12,617, passing Cincinnati's Desmond Rider at 12,418. 2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Bijan Nichols, Navy, Sr., K,...Nichols was voted tri-captain by his teammates, which is the greatest honor a Navy student-athlete can receive. He is believed to be only the second kicker in school history to be a team captain and the first placekicker. Punter Bob Bowstrom was a team captain in 1930. Nichols has made 3 game-winning field goals during his career - 48 yards vs. Tulane in 2019, 23 yards vs. Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl in 2019 and 33 yards at Tulane in 2020.

He also scored the deciding points in the Mids' 2020 win over Temple with a career-long 50-yarder. Nichols is tied for third on Navy's all-time career extra points made list (105), second on the career field goals leader board (33) and second on the career list for most points scored by a kicker (204). Last year, Nichols garnered Second-Team All-AAC recognition, as well as All-East honors. He finished the season as the team's leading scorer with 73 points on 15 field goals (15 of 19) and 28 PATs (28 of 28). - Navy Football

Ravens linebacker Diego Fagot is among four Naval Academy athletes who have received permission from the Department of Defense to pursue professional sports, the academy announced Sunday. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III issued the approval Saturday in accordance with Directive-Type Memorandum 19-011, which was issued Nov. 8, 2019. That policy, titled "Military Service Academy Graduates Seeking to Participate in Professional Sports," allowed service academy graduates to pursue employment in professional sports immediately following graduation.

Athletes approved for the policy are allowed to graduate from their respective service academies but are not commissioned as officers. Whenever their professional careers are complete, those individuals are commissioned and must serve their mandatory military requirement of at least five years. Football player Michael McMorris, women's basketball player Jennifer Coleman and men's soccer player Matt Nocita join Fagot as the Naval Academy athletes approved to pursue professional sports. All four athletes will now enlist in either the Navy or Marine Corps' "Individual Ready Reserve" following graduation from the academy Friday. - Capital Times
