  09/24/22 - Daniel DaviesSr/2023, Navy + More +

Daniel Davies, who came into the game without a field-goal attempt this season, made all three of his tries Saturday night, including a 36-yarder in the second overtime and Navy beat East Carolina 23-20. The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime before Davies connected again. Owen Daffer's 37-yard attempt went wide left. ECU (2-1, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) had the ball in the final minutes, but Tyler Fletcher intercepted Holton Ahlers at the Navy 35 with 25 seconds left to send the game to overtime. The score was 3-3 headed into the fourth quarter when both teams scored two touchdowns apiece.

ECU tied the game at 17-all with eight minutes left when a Navy defender tried to jump a route on a short pass but missed and Isaiah Winstead went down the left sideline for a 67-yard score. Right after ECU had taken at 10-3 lead, Tai Lavatai found Vincent Terrell II 15 yards down the middle and Terrell turned it into a 65-yard score with just under 12 minutes left. On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Eavan Gibbons recovered a fumble at the ECU 25. That turnover turned into a 7-yard TD by Anton Hall Jr. for a 17-10 lead. Ahlers threw a 14-yard TD pass to Ryan Jones for a 10-3 lead to complete an eight-play, 70-yard drive that began when Navy turned the ball over on downs. Ahlers, ECU's fifth-year starting quarterback, became the all-time total yards leader for the AAC with 12,617, passing Cincinnati's Desmond Rider at 12,418. Ahlers threw for 262 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Winstead had 138 yards receiving on 10 catches. - Navy/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Bijan Nichols, Navy, Sr., K,...Nichols was voted tri-captain by his teammates, which is the greatest honor a Navy student-athlete can receive. He is believed to be only the second kicker in school history to be a team captain and the first placekicker. Punter Bob Bowstrom was a team captain in 1930. Nichols has made 3 game-winning field goals during his career - 48 yards vs. Tulane in 2019, 23 yards vs. Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl in 2019 and 33 yards at Tulane in 2020.

He also scored the deciding points in the Mids' 2020 win over Temple with a career-long 50-yarder. Nichols is tied for third on Navy's all-time career extra points made list (105), second on the career field goals leader board (33) and second on the career list for most points scored by a kicker (204). Last year, Nichols garnered Second-Team All-AAC recognition, as well as All-East honors. He finished the season as the team's leading scorer with 73 points on 15 field goals (15 of 19) and 28 PATs (28 of 28). - Navy Football

  05/24/22 - Diego FagotSr/2022, Navy + More +

Ravens linebacker Diego Fagot is among four Naval Academy athletes who have received permission from the Department of Defense to pursue professional sports, the academy announced Sunday. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III issued the approval Saturday in accordance with Directive-Type Memorandum 19-011, which was issued Nov. 8, 2019. That policy, titled "Military Service Academy Graduates Seeking to Participate in Professional Sports," allowed service academy graduates to pursue employment in professional sports immediately following graduation.

Athletes approved for the policy are allowed to graduate from their respective service academies but are not commissioned as officers. Whenever their professional careers are complete, those individuals are commissioned and must serve their mandatory military requirement of at least five years. Football player Michael McMorris, women's basketball player Jennifer Coleman and men's soccer player Matt Nocita join Fagot as the Naval Academy athletes approved to pursue professional sports. All four athletes will now enlist in either the Navy or Marine Corps' "Individual Ready Reserve" following graduation from the academy Friday. - Capital Times

  12/11/21 - Tai LavataiSr/2024, Navy + More +

Quarterback Tai Lavatai ran for two touchdowns and Navy's defense limited Army to 57-second-half yards and a season-low 232 overall in a 17-13 victory Saturday in a game played at the Meadowlands to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Navy (4-8) played a complete game, outgaining Army (8-4) on the ground and overall, controlling the clock and converting three big plays, two on fourth-down, that led to all its points. The Navy defense made the big play at the end, stopping Army quarterback Christian Anderson a yard short at the Navy 46 on fourth down with 91 seconds left.

Bijan Nichols added a 43-yard field goal for Navy, which struggled against a schedule that featured 11 bowl-bound teams. Navy ends the season with a rivalry win, while Army will face Missouri in the Armed Forces Bowl. Anderson scored on a 56-yard run on Army's fourth play from scrimmage and Cole Talley added field goals of 31 and 32 yards, all in the first half. The Black Knights generated little after that in seeing their four-game winning streak snapped and losing to Navy for only the second time in six games. - Navy/AP College Football

Isaac Ruoss ran for two touchdown, Chance Warren had two TD catches and Navy defeated Temple 38-14 on Saturday. The Midshipmen (3-8, 3-5 American Athletic Conference) threw just 12 passes for 72 yards but had touchdown tosses from both Tai Lavatai and Xavier Arline. Navy rolled up 219 yards on the ground. Navy plays Army to end its season Dec. 11. Temple’s season has ended. Tayvon Ruley and Ra’Von Bonner scored rushing touchdowns of 4 and 1 yards, respectively, for Temple (3-10, 1-7), which lost a seventh straight game. The two rushing scores ended a stretch where the Owls hadn’t scored more than 10 points in a game since Oct. 23. Redshirt freshman quarterback Mariano Valenti, a transfer from Northern Illinois, completed 10 of 14 passes for 73 yards. He led the 14-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Ruley’s TD run. - Navy/AP College Football

Tai Lavatai scored a game-winning touchdown from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter and Navy defeated Tulsa 20-17 on Friday night. Lavatai was 0-for-3 passing but gained a career-high 64 yards on the ground, giving him 242 rushing yards and five touchdowns in six starts. The Midshipmen gained 302 yards rushing, zero passing. The 15-play eight-minute drive in Navy's (2-6, 2-4 American Athletic Conference) come-from-behind win foiled a big night by Tulsa's Anthony Watkins, who scored the Golden Hurricanes first kickoff return for a touchdown in nearly a decade and compiled 178 yards in total offense. The win was Navy's first on the road this season and broke a three-game losing streak.

Watkins scored a 97-yard kickoff return to open the second half as Tulsa (3-5, 2-2) took a 10-3 lead. The last Golden Hurricane with a kickoff return for a TD was Trey Watts, 95-yards against Marshall on Oct. 6, 2012. Late in the first half, Zack Long kicked a 26-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead as Tulsa salvaged points from a five-play drive that began with a Watkins season-long 78-yard rush to the Navy 7-yard line. Watkins spun away from a tackler at the line of scrimmage and bolted straight downfield before he was caught. Watkins had 81 yards rushing on five carries. Bijan Nichols evened the score with a 29-yard field goal for Navy with three seconds left in the first half. - Navy/AP College Football

Tai Lavatai returned from a two-game injury absence to lead Navy back from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and a 34-30 win over UCF on Saturday for the Midshipmen's first victory this season. With Navy trailing 30-27, Diego Fabot knocked the ball out of Brandon Johnson's hands after a 20-yard reception and Taylor Robinson recovered at the Navy 47. Eleven plays and over five minutes later, Isaac Ruoss ran in from the 4-yard line to give the Midshipmen the lead with 3:09 left. UCF quickly went down the field down to the Navy 12, but Robinson, who dropped a would-be interception two plays earlier, came up with a pick in the end zone on fourth down with 24 seconds remaining.

The victory was the first for Navy (1-3, 1-1) in three meetings with the Knights (2-2, 0-1) since joining the American Athletic Conference in 2015, the final league team the Midshipmen were winless against. Bijan Nichols kicked his second field goal and Lavatai, who missed the previous two games, ran for his second touchdown of the game after Navy entered the fourth quarter trailing 30-17. Lavatai and Ruoss had 21 carries each as Navy ran for 348 yards led by 85 from Carlinos Acie. Daniel Taylor recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a Navy TD in the first half. UCF freshman Mikey Keene, making his first start in place of the injured Dillon Gabriel, was 16-of-26 passing for 178 yards and two TDs to Johnson. - Navy/AP College Football

  08/07/21 - Diego FagotSr/2022, Navy + More +

Navy football finished seventh in the American Athletic Conference standings last season. Apparently, media members covering the conference think the Midshipmen will fall further toward the cellar in 2021. Navy was predicted to finish in a tie for eighth place in the 11-team league in the preseason media poll that was released Wednesday morning, as the Midshipmen and East Carolina both received 85 votes. Cincinnati, which finished the 2020 season ranked No. 8 nationally, has been tabbed as the preseason favorite. "We're picked low pretty much every year. I don't worry too much about what people say," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said during Wednesday's virtual AAC Football Media Day. "Let people pick us where they want to pick us. We'll just keep our mouths quiet and grind."

Since joining the AAC in 2015, Navy has compiled an overall conference record of 30-17. The Midshipmen captured the West Division outright in 2016 and finished in a tie for first in 2015 and 2019. Navy ranks fourth behind Memphis (34-14), Temple (31-16) and Central Florida (31-17) for most wins over the last six seasons. "I'm not worried about preseason polls; I'm just worried about our preparation, and I like where we're at right now," he said. "We'll be ready Sept. 4 when the first game comes." - Capital Times

  06/06/21 - Cameron KinleySr/2021, Navy + More +

Recent Naval Academy graduate Cameron Kinley will not be allowed to pursue professional football as the current Secretary of the Navy is not adhering to a policy put in place by the Trump administration. Kinley signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent on May 1 and has been seeking permission to play in the National Football League ever since. The United States Navy approved Kinley's request to participate in Tampa Bay's rookie-free agent minicamp late last month.

However, Secretary of the Navy Thomas W. Harker has now denied Kinley's request to delay his commission and is requiring the Naval Academy Class of 2021 president to begin serving as an ensign. Ryan Williams-Jenkins, a former Navy football player who is Kinley's agent, made the announcement on Monday. Williams-Jenkins said the Navy will not allow Kinley to appeal the decision. Denying Cameron a fair process will also deny him the dream of playing in the NFL, Williams-Jenkins said in a press release issued Monday at noon. - Capital Times

  05/20/21 - Diego FagotSr/2022, Navy + More +

Kevin Brennan, Mychal Cooper, Diego Fagot and Chance Warren were almost unanimous selections as captains of the Navy football team. Those four rising seniors were also unanimous when asked what it means to be voted captain by teammates. To a man, they called it the highest honor they have received to date. "It's a great honor and one of the things I'll hold onto for the rest of my life because it's not something you did, it's your teammates voting you in and that humbles me," Fagot said. "We all feel blessed to be in the position to represent the team as a whole."

Warren and Cooper were chosen as the offensive captains with Brennan and Fagot as their defensive counterparts. They were voted as captains earlier this month, shortly after Navy spring camp concluded. "I'm very excited about our captains and I'm really excited about this team. These four have really made an effort during the spring to bring the team together and that's been a big priority for them," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "Also, nobody outworks these four on the field and when your best players are your hardest workers, you have a chance to be good." - Capital Times

  05/04/21 - Cameron KinleySr/2021, Navy + More +

Tears of disappointment quickly turned into tears of joy for former Navy football player Cameron Kinley on Saturday night. When the NFL Draft ended and Kinley had not been selected, he was down in the dumps. He took a walk around the block with a cousin who offered words of encouragement. After having a good cry and coming to grips with the possibility his dream of playing professional football might be over, Kinley received a series of phone calls from his agent. Ryan Williams-Jenkins, who played football at the Naval Academy and is a 2014 graduate, informed Kinley the Kansas City Chiefs were interested in signing him as a preferred free agent. Kinley was naturally elated and told Williams-Jenkins to make the deal.

Moments later, Williams-Jenkins called back to tell Kinley the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were also offering a free agent contract. "Let's go to Tampa," said Kinley, who knew a member of that team's coaching staff. Tampa Bay inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell played football at Middle Tennessee State University with Kinley's father, Richard. "I just felt more comfortable going down there knowing someone on coaching staff," Kinley said. - Capital Times
