Navy moved into The Associated Press college football poll at No. 25, giving the American Athletic Conference four ranked teams, more than all but the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference. With nine ranked teams off this weekend, including four of the top five, there was little movement throughout the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. LSU is No. 1 for a second consecutive week and Alabama is No. 2. The Tigers and Crimson Tide on Saturday will play the first regular-season 1-2 game since the same two did it in 2011.

Navy joins fellow AAC members No. 17 Cincinnati, No. 19 Memphis and No. 23 SMU in the Top 25. Four ranked teams matches a high for the 7-year-old American, which was born from the collapse of the Big East. "UCF was the top vote-getter outside the Top 25," AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said Sunday. "It think it validates what we've been trying to do. Our goal is depth." Aresco has pushed for the American to be considered along-side the Power Five, branding the AAC a P6 conference. "It shows that the conference continues to make progress," he said. - AP College Football

  11/01/19 - Malcolm PerrySr/2020, Navy + More +

Quarterback Malcolm Perry and Navy have inserted themselves into the mix for a New Year's Six bowl game. Perry ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 165 yards and another score Friday night in leading the Midshipmen to a 56-10 rout of UConn on national television. It was the fifth straight 100-yard rushing game for the senior, who eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for the third consecutive season. The win keeps the Midshipmen (7-1, 5-1 American) within striking distance of undefeated No. 15 SMU in the AAC West Division, with games against Notre Dame and the Mustangs on the horizon. "We haven't done much yet," said Perry. "We've got some great competitors coming up in a few weeks. All we've done so far is put ourselves in a great position."

Perry scored on his first carry, spinning past the line of scrimmage and going 58 yards down the numbers on the right side of the field. He also had a 58-yard touchdown pass in the first half, hitting sophomore receiver Mychal Cooper down the middle. It was one of just six passes thrown by Perry, who completed three of them, all for more than 30 yards. "He walks around like he's a plebe; the most humble kid," said Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. "But back to back to back thousand-yards rushing and we're not over yet. He's doing great things running our offense." - AP College Football

Navy senior quarterback Malcolm Perry has watched Bijan Nichols kick long field goals in practice ever since the freshman arrived at the academy over the summer. Still, he wasn't taking any chances when Nichols lined up for a game-winner Saturday against Tulane. "At the end of practice, everybody's screaming and everybody's trying to get in his head and try to emulate this situation on the field," Perry said. "I've seen him do it before, and I was really confident in him. But my eyes were closed. I was praying." Perry's prayers -- as well as the Midshipmen's -- were answered when Nichols connected on a 48-yarder as time expired to help Navy edge the Green Wave 41-38 on Saturday.

"I had a really good feeling that our offense was going to get me in range, if not score, so I needed to be ready," Nichols said. "I just went through my normal routine and practiced what I always practice doing." Nichols' kick -- a yard shy of a career long -- capped a seven-play drive to secure bowl eligibility for the Midshipmen (6-1, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) for the 15th time in 17 years. Navy, which squandered a 24-0 lead against the Green Wave (5-3, 2-2), has doubled its win total from 2018, when it went 3-10 and endured its worst season since 2002. "After last year, it's great to be bowl eligible," coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "I'm never going to take that for granted again." - AP College Football

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo knew his defense was poised for a break-out season during spring practice. The Midshipmen's high-octane triple-option sputtered against the defenders during team drills. The players also continued to improve each week under new defensive coordinator Brian Newberry. The Navy defense backed another dominant performance on the ground by senior quarterback Malcolm Perry in a 35-3 victory over South Florida on Saturday. It was the first time the Midshipmen did not allow a touchdown since 2013. "I've been in this stadium for 22 years, man, and that was as dominant as a defensive performance against a really good team that I've seen in a really long time," Niumatalolo said. "The kids are playing really, really hard on defense. I am pleased with what they did."

Perry finished with 188 yards on 22 carries with a pair of touchdowns. He surpassed more than 3,000 career yards rushing in his career, joining Keenan Reynolds, Napoleon McCallum and Chris McCoy as the only Navy players to accomplish that feat. "I think the defense did a great job tonight," Perry said. "Of course, they kept us in the game. They kept the momentum on our side." The Midshipmen have a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2017 when they won five straight to start the year. - Navy/AP College Football

Williams also scored rushing touchdowns for Navy (4-1, 2-1 American).   Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry had a 4-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds remaining to give the Midshipmen a stunning 34-25 victory over Air Force on Saturday. The Falcons had scored 16 consecutive points in the final quarter and took the lead on a 1-yard run by Taven Birdow with 3:15 left in the game. However, Perry led an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive to claim the victory in the first leg of the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy. Navy linebacker Tony Brown returned a fumble 7 yards in the closing seconds to round out the scoring. Perry finished with 111 yards on 23 carries with a pair of touchdowns. He also completed 5 of 7 passes for 144 yards.

A fumble by Navy fullback Nelson Smith gave Air Force the ball on the Midshipmen 37 midway through the fourth quarter. The Falcons capitalized on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback DJ Hammond III that pulled them within 21-19 with 7:38 left in the game. The Falcons (3-2) then put together a six-play, 72-yard scoring drive, capped by the scoring run by Birdow to take its first lead since the first quarter before the Midshipmen (2-2) rallied. Air Force kicker Jake Koehnke converted all four of his field-goal opportunities, including a career-long 49-yard kick that pulled the Falcons to within 14-9. Hammond had 71 yards on 12 carries. He also competed 10 of 25 pass attempts for 205 yards with an interception. - Navy/AP College Football

Nelson Smith ran for 96 yards with three touchdowns, Diego Fagot had nine tackles and Navy dominated Holy Cross 45-7 in the regular-season opener Saturday. After passing for just 12 yards through much of the first half, Malcolm Perry found Mychal Cooper for a 44-yard gain in the final minute. Two plays later Perry scored from the 1, boosting the lead to 24-7 and the Midshipmen were never threatened the rest of the way. Perry was 6 of 9 for 103 yards and a 162.8 quarterback rating. Despite some added focus on throwing the ball, Navy still builds its offense around the triple-option and amassed 428 yards on the ground against the Crusaders. - AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD CANDIDATE: QB Malcolm Perry, Navy,...Perry enters his senior campaign with 2,342 career rushing yards as a slot back and quarterback, which is the eighth most in school history. He trails seventh-place Cleveland Cooper (1972-74) by 240 yards, sixth-place Ricky Dobbs (2008-10) by 323 yards and fifth-place Kyle Eckel (2002-04) by 564 yards.

Perry needs 658 rushing yards in 2019 to become just the fourth player in program history to rush for 3,000 career yards, joining all-time leader Keenan Reynolds (4,559 yards, 2012-15), Napoleon McCallum (4,179 yards, 1981-85) and Chris McCoy (3,401 yards, 1995-97).
