  WEEK 1 FCS NATIONAL FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Adam Jones, Montana State, RB, R-Fr., 6-1, 200, Missoula, Montana,...Jones has played a big role in his Big Sky team's 2-0 start. He carried the ball 17 times for 167 yards (including a 93-yard touchdown) in a 35-31 FBS win at New Mexico. He then rushed for 62 yards and a TD on 11 carries in a 31-7 triumph at Utah Tech.   Tommy Mellott threw a touchdown pass and ran for two more touchdowns to help FCS No. 4 Montana State beat Utah Tech 31-7 Saturday night. Mellott was 14-of-21 passing for 152 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown to Rohan Jones, and added 71 yards rushing on six carries for Montana State (2-0). Scottre Humphrey had 104 yards rushing on 20 carries. Taco Dowler returned a punt 53 yards to the 8, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Adam Jones that opened the scoring late in the first quarter and Mellott kept the ball on a zone-read play and raced 47 yards for a TD that made it 14-0 with 13:13 left in the second quarter.

Mellott connected with Rohan Jones for a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the third and Myles Sansted kicked a 27-yard field goal to make it 24-0 going into the fourth quarter.   Adam Jones scored on a 93-yard dash and Scottre Humphrey added a 4-yard run for the go-ahead score as Montana State scored twice in the final 4 1/2 minutes to stun New Mexico 35-31 in a season opener on Saturday. The Lobos, in the debut of Bronco Mendenhall as coach, led 17-0 early in the second quarter and 24-14 at halftime. A 13-yard fumble return by Noah Avinger - the Lobos' second scoop-and-score of the game - gave New Mexico a 31-14 lead three plays into the third quarter.

New Mexico had drives of 57 and 50 yards come up empty in the second half, but the Lobos still led 31-21 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining. At that point, Jones took a first-down hand off and was barely touched as he raced up the left sideline to make it 31-28. New Mexico punted with 1:59 remaining and Montana State drove 89 yards to Humphrey's go-ahead score with 10 seconds remaining. The Bobcats had 182 yards on their final two possessions and finished with 567 totals yards to 325 for New Mexico.   Tommy Mellott ran for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth and Isaiah Ifanse ran for 162 yards and two scores as Montana State drilled William & Mary, 55-7 in a Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinal game on a 17-degree Friday night. The Bobcats (12-1) advance to the semifinals and a potential rematch with South Dakota State, which faces Holy Cross in a quarterfinal match-up Saturday. Montana State knocked off the Jackrabbits, 31-17 in a semifinal matchup in 2021 and advanced to face North Dakota State for the national title before losing.

Mellott spearheaded an offense that posted 473 yards of total offense, 328 of it on the ground. Montana State's defense forced William & Mary to punt 10 times and the Bobcats' punt-return squad had 143 yards and a touchdown on a 79-yard return by Taco Dowler. Mellott scored the game's first touchdown on the final play of the first quarter, skirting the left end and racing 22 yards down the sideline to make it 10-0. After holding the Tribe to a three-and-out, Ifanse raced 68 yards untouched to the end zone to make it 17-0.   Sean Chambers threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, Blake Glessner kicked four field goals on a frozen field and Montana State defeated Weber State 33-25 in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday. Montana State (11-1), the fourth seed, earned its ninth straight win. The Bobcats, whose only loss this season was to FBS-member Oregon State 68-28, is home against fifth-seeded No. 5 William & Mary in the quarterfinals. Weber State (10-3) got a 39-yard field goal from Kyle Thompson on the opening possession to grab a 3-0 lead. Montana State answered with Chambers' 2-yard touchdown run for a 7-3 lead after one quarter. Glessner stretched the Bobcats lead to 10-3 with a 36-yard field goal, but Weber State (9-3) pulled even on Bronson Barron's 15-yard scoring strike to Ty MacPherson. Glessner kicked a 33-yard field goal with 2:47 left and another - from 31 yards out - on the final play of the half to give Montana State a 16-10 lead. The Bobcats gained separation in the third quarter. Glessner kicked a 32-yard field goal and Chambers connected with Derryk Snell for a 28-yard touchdown and a 26-10 Bobcats lead.

Chambers fired a 47-yard scoring strike to Willie Patterson 50 seconds into the final quarter on a double reverse and Montana State led 33-10. Kylan Weisser threw touchdown passes covering 31 yards to Jon Christensen and an 8-yarder to Hayden Meacham to get the Wildcats within eight points with 4:42 remaining. But the Bobcats used seven running plays - to pick up three first downs - and a kneel-down to run out the clock. Tommy Mellott completed 13 of 19 passes for 91 yards for the Bobcats, who play two quarterbacks. Chambers was 2-of-2 passing for 75 yards. Mellott carried 22 times for 158 of the Bobcats' 388 rushing yards. Chambers carried 13 times for 92 yards. MSU entered play second in the nation averaging 325.7 yards rushing per game. Isaiah Ifanse made his season debut for Montana State.
