  The Southeastern Conference's most-improved defense is putting the band back together for 2023. Junior linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper became the latest player to confirm he's coming back next season, the team announced Tuesday on social media. The second-team All-SEC selection led the Tigers (6-7) with 14 tackles for loss and 23 hurries this past season, his first at Mizzou since transferring from Florida last year. Hopper, who started all 13 games, finished second on the team with 78 tackles and 32 pressures and added 2.5 sacks and an interception.

Hopper is one of eight regular starters from the 2022 defense positioned to return next season, along with defensive tackles Darius Robinson and Kristian Williams, linebacker Chad Bailey, cornerbacks Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Kris Abrams-Draine and safeties Jaylon Carlies and Joseph Charleston. The only regular starters from the end of the regular season not coming back are senior defensive ends Isaiah McGuire and D.J. Coleman and senior safety Martez Manuel. - Post-Dispatch

  Louisville football signed three wide receivers from the Class of 2023 last month during the early National Signing Day but will have one more coming this fall. Former Jackson State receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. committed to Louisville on Thursday evening, adding to head coach Jeff Brohm's first signing class with the Cardinals. Coleman, who was the SWAC Freshman of the Year last season, played for coach Deion Sanders at JSU before he left to become Colorado's head football coach. The group of incoming wide receivers includes William Fowles, Jahlil McClain and Cataurus Hicks, all of whom are three-star recruits. Jimmy Calloway and Jadon Thompson add to the mix after opting to transfer in from Tennessee and Cincinnati, respectively.

In his collegiate debut, Coleman, deemed a top-20 transfer prospect by Rivals, was the Tigers' third-leading receiver, totaling 475 yards and 13 touchdowns on 32 catches in 13 games played as JSU ended the season with a 12-1 record and the program's first perfect regular season. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver added special teams duties, averaging a team-high 23.3 yards per kickoff return in addition to 8.7 yards per punt return. Prior to coming to Jackson State, a historically Black university, Coleman was a four-star recruit, the No. 6 wide receiver in the Class of 2021, ranked 54th nationally and the top-rated recruit in Missouri, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings. - Courier Journal

  Missouri football defensive lineman will return to the Tigers for 2023, he announced in a social media post on Sunday. Robinson had said he was still undecided after playing in the Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 23. Robinson's post borrowed heavily from Michael Jordan's "I'm back" press release, where Jordan announced his return to the Chicago Bulls after his hiatus to play minor league baseball.

Robinson finished last season with 3.5 sacks and 35 total tackles. The 2022 campaign ended as a career season for him, and he blossomed into a dominant force on the interior, soaking up blocks to free up defensive end Isaiah McGuire and linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper. In the Gasparilla Bowl loss to Wake Forest, Robinson moved over to defensive end in McGuire's absence. His return provides stability for the 2023 Tigers, and could further help his NFL stock. - Columbia Daily Tribune

  Make that two standout cornerbacks returning to the Missouri defense in 2023. Last week Kris Abrams-Draine announced plans to come back to the Tigers next season. On Sunday, it was Ennis Rakestraw Jr.'s turn. MU and Rakestraw both announced his return plans on social media. Rakestraw and Abrams-Draine formed one of the Southeastern Conference's best cornerback tandems this season, combining for 25 pass break-ups - the most by any pair of teammates in the conference. Abrams-Draine leads the league with 13 breakups heading into Mizzou's bowl game on Friday, while Rakestraw is tied for second with 12. Both were eligible for the 2023 NFL draft and could have considered entering the NCAA transfer portal. - Post-Dispatch

  Brady Cook threw for 242 yards and a touchdown while running for 138 yards and another score, and Missouri's defense stuffed Arkansas when it mattered in the fourth quarter, allowing the Tigers to become bowl-eligible with a 29-27 victory over the Razorbacks on Saturday. Cody Schrader added 97 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Tigers (6-6, 3-5 SEC), who avenged a loss to their border rival last year and have now qualified for a bowl game in each of coach Eli Drinkwitz's first three seasons Arkansas (6-6, 4-4) had the ball twice with less than 8 minutes left and a chance to drive for a go-ahead field goal, but the Tigers forced three-and-outs both times and all but ran out the clock on their first league win in a month. The Razorbacks' KJ Jefferson threw for 205 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while also running for a score, though he was constantly harassed by Missouri's defensive front. Raheim Sanders, the league's second-leading rusher, was held to just 47 yards with a touchdown reception.

Missouri actually scored on each of its first four drives yet still trailed at halftime. That's because the Razorbacks were better at reaching the end zone. While the Tigers got touchdown runs from Schrader and Cook to cap long drives, they also had to settle for a pair of field goals from Harrison Mevis, including a chipshot after a drive stalled at the Arkansas 10 late in the first half. The Razorbacks were forced to punt twice, thanks to Missouri's ferocious pass rush, but they also got a short TD run from Jefferson and his touchdown pass to Matt Landers. And when the Razorbacks got the ball back with 5 1/2 minutes before the break, they breezed 75 yards down field and Jefferson hit Sanders out of the backfield for a 21-20 lead. The Razorbacks had a chance to retake the lead in the fourth quarter, after they'd closed to within 29-24, but they couldn't get into the end zone after first-and-goal at the Missouri 2 and coach Sam Pittman settled for another field goal.   Freezing temperatures couldn't chill Missouri on Saturday night. Brady Cook tossed three touchdown passes, Luther Burden and Cody Schrader both scored twice and the Tigers rolled to a 45-14 victory over New Mexico State. The Aggies (4-6) showed spark on their opening drive with quarterback Diego Pavia completing his first three passes for 30 yards and running back Jamoni Jones chipping in 9 yards on the ground. But the New Mexico State drive stalled at the Missouri 36 as the Tigers' defense began to impose its will, forcing seven consecutive incompletions before Pavia completed his next pass. The Tigers' offense, for a change, clicked from the opening drive. Cook led an 11-play scoring drive capped off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Burden. The freshman receiver took the tunnel screen from Cook and hurdled a defender in reaching the end zone, putting the Tigers (5-6) on top 7-0. Cook and the offense used a more methodical approach on the team's next possession, embarking on a 17-play, 81-yard drive that ended with Cody Schrader's 2-yard touchdown run. Schrader, a senior transfer from Division II Truman State, rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries and caught four passes for 47 yards.

Cook connected with tight end Ryan Hoerstkamp for a 32-yard touchdown with 4:28 left in the second quarter and the Tigers led 21-0. The Aggies scored in the third quarter thanks to a big play from backup freshman quarterback Gavin Frakes. After an injury briefly knocked Pavia out of the game, Frakes found Eric Marsh for 21 yards on fourth-and-2 from the Missouri 40-yard line. Pavia returned to the game and two plays later he tossed a pitch on the option to tailback Star Thomas for a 10-yard touchdown run. Burden scored his second touchdown late in the third quarter, taking a pop pass on a jet sweep from Cook and weaving 14 yards into the end zone to put the Tigers on top 35-7. Cook contributed three catches for 35 yards and two scores. He also ran three times for 12 yards. Receiver Barrett Banister paced the Tigers with seven catches for 91 yards, both career highs for the senior in his sixth season with Missouri. Cook completed 19 of 27 passes for 251 yards with three touchdowns, while leading the Tigers with 71 yards rushing on seven carries. Missouri's defense even got involved in the scoring action when sophomore defensive back Daylan Carnell intercepted a pass from Pavia and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 42-7. - Missouri/AP College Football

  Marcus Carroll ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns to lead Georgia State to a 42-14 rout of Southern Miss on Saturday. Georgia State (4-5, 3-2 Sun Belt Conference) has won four of its last five games while Southern Miss (5-4, 3-2) ended a three-game win streak. Carroll scored on an 18-yard run and twice more from short yardage. Darren Grainger threw for 133 yards and two touchdown passes and added 143 yards on the ground on 13 carries. Jamari Thrash made two touchdown catches and had 60 yards receiving. Frank Gore Jr. had a 43-yard touchdown run that pulled Southern Miss to 28-14 late in the third quarter and finished with 87 yards rushing. Trey Lowe threw for 84 yards and a score.   Brady Cook ran for a touchdown and directed three long, first-half scoring drives as Missouri built a 17-0 lead on the way to its fourth straight win over No. 25 South Carolina, 23-10, on Saturday night. Receiver Dominic Lovett had career highs with 10 catches for 148 yards while the Tigers' defense had 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and held the Gamecocks (5-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) to 203 total yards. The Tigers (4-4, 2-3) won their second straight after starting league play 0-3. Missouri beat a ranked opponent for the first time since its 45-41 win over No. 17 LSU on Oct. 10, 2020. It ended the Gamecocks four-game win streak - and also ended their stay in the national rankings after getting in this past week for the first time in four years.

Cook proved a steady hand against a South Carolina defense that was active and opportunistic in beating No. 19 Kentucky on Oct. 8 and Texas A&M last week. Cook led a 15-play, 96-yard scoring drive that took up most of the first quarter and which he ended with his 3-yard burst to the end zone. The Tigers went on another lengthy drive on their next possession, this one going 84 yards in 10 plays and finishing with Cody Schrader's 1-yard run. Missouri looked to make it three-straight touchdown drives as it had a first-and-goal on the South Carolina 3. But the Gamecocks forced Cook into a couple of incompletes before settling for Harrison Mevis' 19-yard field goal and a 17-0 lead. The Gamecocks could not dig themselves out of that hole and finished with its fewest points since losing to No. 1 Georgia 48-7 on Sept. 17.
