After Missouri football lost the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa in December, Darius Robinson didn't know what he was going to do. He was noncommittal from the podium after the game, but embraced head coach Eli Drinkwitz in the hallway afterward, knowing he might have an NFL future starting in 2023. Robinson wasn't the only one. Kris Abrams-Draine, Ty'Ron Hopper, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Chad Bailey and more could have all gone to either the NFL, or entered the transfer portal for another school.

Instead, all those players are back. And Missouri's defense, now in coordinator Blake Baker's second season, will be expected to be even better than last year's unit. "We got to play really good ball," Robinson said. "The mistakes we made last year just can't happen anymore. I think he's made it very clear that this is a very experienced team so we have to take care of it." The Tigers return eight defensive starters from the 2022 squad. They also retained several key depth pieces and brought in veteran help at positions of need through the transfer portal. It's an experienced unit, and coaches are expecting it to act as such. Cornerbacks coach Al Pogue said the players are taking more of a leading role in Baker's second year. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri football defensive lineman will return to the Tigers for 2023, he announced in a social media post on Sunday. Robinson had said he was still undecided after playing in the Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 23. Robinson's post borrowed heavily from Michael Jordan's "I'm back" press release, where Jordan announced his return to the Chicago Bulls after his hiatus to play minor league baseball.

Robinson finished last season with 3.5 sacks and 35 total tackles. The 2022 campaign ended as a career season for him, and he blossomed into a dominant force on the interior, soaking up blocks to free up defensive end Isaiah McGuire and linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper. In the Gasparilla Bowl loss to Wake Forest, Robinson moved over to defensive end in McGuire's absence. His return provides stability for the 2023 Tigers, and could further help his NFL stock. - Columbia Daily Tribune

The defensive line is full of seniors, but if there's one underclassmen expected to crack the rotation it's the sophomore from Canton, Mich., who started with the first unit in the preseason's second major scrimmage. The 6-foot-6, 295-pounder, a converted defensive end, could prove to be one of Odom's best out-of-state recruits, especially considering Robinson didn't play high school football until 2017, his junior year.

Robinson attended a prep school for basketball, but when college offers never materialized, he transferred to Canton High and started playing football for the first time since sixth grade. Then, the offers poured in. He chose Mizzou over Colorado and Minnesota. "It's crazy," he added. "I was watching film of myself from high school to my freshman year to my sophomore year and I see things that I wasn't able to do before. Now it's my sophomore year, and I'm really starting to see it in the practice film. So, I just keep working and keep trusting my technique. I know my ceiling's really high, but right now I'm just working on the things I need to get done now to help this team win." - Post-Dispatch
