Asked to describe the football player Luther Burden III, Missouri receivers coach Jacob Peeler didn't describe Burden playing football. "We were doing a dodgeball tournament one day," Peeler said Sunday. "A team-development thing. Whether it's dodgeball or football, he just likes to compete...I think the one thing that I saw in the spring is just his competitive character." As for a scouting report on Burden's dodgeball acumen, Peeler described what stood out in a word: "Elusiveness."

Camp opens Monday and Burden, a freshman, will leap for passes both at practice and in the daydreams of alums in cubicles across the state. Mizzou has the No. 1 wide receiver in the class of 2022 - and he's from St. Louis, too - and there is this belief that the Tigers surely have college football's next D.K. Metcalf. Doesn't hurt that the Tigers already have Metcalf's collegiate receivers coach in, yep, Peeler (oh, and A.J. Brown's receivers coach, too). Burden was a consensus five-star recruit from East St. Louis High who was Rivals Illinois High School Player of the Yar. As a senior he caught 71 passes for 1,174 yards, 20 touchdowns and returned 21 punts for 852 yards with eight going for scores. - Post Dispatch

Missouri quarterback Brady Cook didn't flinch during his coach's offseason shopping trip through the QB market. Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz made it clear he wanted to add experience to the depth chart this offseason and eventually landed 24-year-old transfer Jack Abraham, adding the veteran to a group that returns Cook and redshirt freshman Tyler Macon. "I figured they were going to add another quarterback just with how many quarterbacks we had in the room," Cook said Sunday. "That was to be expected. I thought me and Tyler, we processed it well." Abraham's addition, plus the arrival of four-star prospect Sam Horn, ensured a four-man battle would command the spotlight for Drinkwitz's third preseason camp. - Post Dispatch

Last season as a junior at Stanford, Peat rushed for 404 yards on 79 attempts with three touchdowns - which was highlighted by a career night 115-yard performance on the road against a ranked USC team. - Rockmnation.com

Kris Abrams-Draine came to Missouri as a wide receiver in 2020, during which time he had three yards rushing in five games played. Before last season, he switched to defensive back. The move was successful, as the Spanish Fort (Ala.) product started 10 games and played in all 13 as the primary nickel back in then-defensive coordinator Steve Wilks' defensive scheme. He broke up seven passes to lead the team and also contributed three interceptions. Abrams-Draine also pitched in on kick returns in 2021, collecting 484 yards, including a 100-yard touchdown that was one of the few highlights of Missouri's loss to Tennessee. - Columbia Daily Tribune

His best season with the Bulls came in 2021 when he caught 15 passes, totaling 157 yards and a touchdown, which led all Buffalo tight ends. He redshirted his first season in 2019 and played sparingly in 2020. Stephens went to Buffalo after playing his high school football at LaBrae High School in Ohio.   Tyler Badie is gone. Now Missouri has to figure out what to do next. Of all the losses after the 2021 season, the SEC's leading rusher graduating and heading to the Baltimore Ravens might have hurt the most for the Tigers. Badie was the centerpiece of MU's offensive attack, and replacing him will be no easy feat. With fall camp and the season coming up fast, here's a look at the Missouri running backs group as it currently stands.

One of the leading contenders for Badie's spot is Nathaniel Peat, a Rock Bridge product who transferred to Missouri from Stanford during the offseason. Peat played in the Tigers' spring game, rushing for 30 yards and a touchdown. Last season with the Cardinal, he led the team in rushing yards with 404, also scoring three touchdowns on the ground. He also led the Pac-12 with 663 yards on kickoff returns. Peat left Rock Bridge as the program's leading rusher, with 4,448 total yards. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Luther Burden III has been in Columbia for several months now, adapting to his new surroundings. He'd be like every other college freshman, a little nervous to be away from his family. It's different for Burden, though. He's the hope of Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri football, the wide receiver from St. Louis who fans expect to become an all-time Tigers great after spurning Oklahoma, Georgia and Alabama for MU.

Burden said he doesn't go out much around Columbia, but when he does, he sometimes gets recognized by the public. For some, the attention could get stressful, but Burden said he's handling it well. "It's a good feeling," he said. "Just for you to go outside and someone knows you and recognizes who you are, everybody wants that. It's a good feeling." His name is already renowned as the anticipation grows toward his first collegiate football game on Sept. 1 at home against Louisiana Tech. Tigers fans understand the potential is limitless. Todd and Ashley Good were the first to arrive at Burden's signing event with their six-year-old son Breven in tow for a chance to meet Missouri's fourth-ever five-star recruit. "I'm looking forward to his career," Todd Good said. "Easy chance to meet a player, it's not every day you get to meet somebody who could be going in the NFL someday." - Columbia Daily Tribune

Ty'Ron Hopper transferred to Missouri from Florida this offseason, after being expected to earn a starting spot with the Gators for 2022. He joined his cousin Tyrone Hopper, a defensive lineman for the Tigers who transferred from North Carolina. Hopper made 65 tackles last season for Florida, starting four starts. Ten of the tackles were for loss. The 6'2", 220 pound senior from Shelby, North Carolina also had 3.5 sacks and forced a fumble. He will likely take over the middle spot of the Tiger linebacking corps. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Chad Bailey started eight games last year for the Tigers, earning more time on the field after Jamie Pettway transferred out of the program. Bailey showed an ability to shed blocks, an area where other Missouri players struggled last season. The senior from Missouri City, Texas finished the 2021 campaign with 46 total tackles, 5.5 of them for loss. He also contributed a sack and two fumble recoveries.

Bailey is expected to maintain his starting spot on the weak side. He and Ty'Ron Hopper will be key contributors as the Tigers look to improve their overall defensive performance under new coordinator Blake Baker, formerly Missouri's safeties coach. Bailey sat out the 2022 spring game, along with several other key defensive players. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri has added another Power 5 reinforcement from the NCAA transfer portal, securing a commitment Tuesday from former Oregon defensive tackle Kristian Williams. The 2019 recruit entered the portal in May and visited Mizzou's campus this past weekend. The Memphis native was a three-star prospect in 2019 and held a Mizzou scholarship offer from former coach Barry Odom's staff. He comes to MU with three years of remaining eligibility. He's the 12th FBS transfer to join the team this offseason. - Post-Dispatch
