After just two seasons with the Bears, sophomore receiver Makai Polk entered the transfer portal despite a breakout 2020 season. Should Polk decide to transfer, his presence will be sorely missed. Polk ranked behind only Kekoa Crawford in receiving yards this season, racking up 183 yards and a touchdown over the season's four games. He had multiple receptions in every contest this season and, between the end of the 2019 season and now, emerged as a deep target for quarterback Chase Garbers. Polk had the Bears' longest reception of the season, a 52-yard bomb against Oregon State, and filled out his lanky, 6'3" frame over the offseason to become a bigger, more physical threat on the outside. That came after a career-best 105-yard performance at the 2019 Redbox Bowl to end his freshman season. - Daily Californian

Mississippi State is losing another key cog in its defense. Senior defensive end Marquiss Spencer announced his intentions Wednesday night that he will forgo his extra year of eligibility to enter the 2021 NFL draft. Spencer is the second MSU defender to forgo their extra year of eligibility after senior linebacker Erroll Thompson did so on Tuesday. Spencer, who lost his junior year due to a season-ending injury, enjoyed massive outputs in 2019 and 2020 and briefly flirted with entering the draft a year ago. As a senior, the Greenwood native recorded 30 tackles, three sacks and an interception in nine games. Spencer also earned SEC Academic Fall Honor Roll honors in both 2017 and 2019. - The Dispatch

Former West Point product and Mississippi State safety Marcus Murphy is heading to the NFL. Murphy, who previously opted out of the season on Nov. 12, announced his decision to forgo his final two years of eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft Friday afternoon in a lengthy Twitter post. A former three-star recruit in the class of 2018, the former West Point quarterback switched from under center to the secondary upon his arrival in Starkville. In 16 career games, Murphy totaled 67 tackles and two interceptions - one of which he returned for a touchdown.   KJ Costello's future at Mississippi State remains murky Monday, the East-West Shrine Bowl announced MSU quarterback KJ Costello had received an honorary invite to the event, though the game will not be held due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The East-West Shrine Bowl is normally reserved for college seniors who are preparing for the NFL draft. Given the usual criterion, Costello's selection would presume that he will not be using his extra year of eligibility afforded by the NCAA this year. Asked if he had any indication Costello would not be back in Starkville next year, Leach said, "I think that's still in the works. Not sure yet."

In his first game at MSU after a four year career at Stanford, Costello broke a three-decade old SEC passing record as he torched defending national champion LSU for 623 passing yards and five touchdowns. Following the LSU game, the former Cardinal performed to mixed results and was twice pulled in favor of freshman backup Will Rogers. Costello has not appeared in a game since leaving an Oct. 31 contest against No. 1 Alabama with an undisclosed injury. - The Dispatch

Mississippi State added a talented player who has some baggage by way of the transfer portal Thursday. Former Central Florida defensive end Randy Charlton announced his commitment to Mississippi State via Twitter. Charlton had 18 tackles and two sacks in five games played as a starter on UCF's defensive line. Charlton's junior season was cut short a month ago after he was kicked off the team at UCF for his role in verbal harassment of UCF police officers, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

One of Charlton's teammates was arrested for driving without a license and carrying a firearm without a license. As officers detained him, Charlton and some of his other teammates arrived at the scene and started yelling at the officers. Charlton had 68 tackles, including 12.5 for a loss and 4.0 sacks, in 26 games played at UCF. He adds depth to a Mississippi State defensive line that might lose seniors Kobe Jones and Marquiss Spencer if they do not elect to come back with their extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - The Dispatch
