As James Madison makes its Sun Belt Conference debut at the league's annual Media Days in the Big Easy, the program continues to see an increase in its ticket sales. The Dukes have sold 7,455 season tickets, which is just 100 shy of an all-time record, JMU assistant athletic director for communications Kevin Warner told the Daily News-Record on Tuesday. "Great support keeps growing from JMU Nation!!" JMU Athletic Director Jeff Bourne tweeted after the DN-R reported the updated sales statistics. "Season tickets [are] still available, just over a month until kickoff!" JMU has seen an increase in sales since mid-May, when they had sold 6,626 season seats to that point. - Daily News-Record

He started all 13 games at left tackle in 2021, playing in nearly all offensive snaps (927).   07/25/22 - Zamari WaltonrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 188 (DS#41 CB) + More +

Georgia Tech running back Dontae Smith is not immune to venturing into the den of the unwashed - perusing Twitter to read users' comments about his football team. "I do see what they say, and I do take it into account," Smith said. "And I'm so ready to prove everybody wrong." After three consecutive three-win seasons, frustration is high within the Yellow Jackets fan base, and expressions of that animus - mostly with coach Geoff Collins - are perhaps most unshackled in the social-media sphere of Twitter.

It was revealed, too, in the home attendance (lowest since 1989) and in the sea of red that was the backdrop for Tech's final home game last season against Georgia. "I mean, obviously, there's going to be a lot of negativity when you have the past three seasons we have," tight end Dylan Leonard said. "When you have three wins (each) the past three seasons, you don't blame them. Crowds are going to show up when you're good, and they're not going to be there much when you're not doing as well. We realize that. I'm not stuck up about it or anything like that. I think that's with every fan base and every Twitter fan base you go to." But, as is perhaps the case with every team that is counting down the days to the start of the preseason, the Jackets believe better days are ahead this season. Leonard, Smith and cornerback Zamari Walton all shared different reasons for their belief at the ACC Kickoff media event Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. "I definitely feel like it's our time," Walton said. "Definitely why not Georgia Tech?" - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  07/24/22 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

JJ Pegues and safety Ladarius Tennison are two former Auburn players who transferred to Ole Miss this offseason. Pegues is an Oxford native getting to come home for his junior season and Tennison is coming to Mississippi after logging 43 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss in the last two seasons. Auburn defensive end Derick Hall, a Gulfport native, raved about his former teammates. "Ten is really good," Hall said. "He's smaller, he's shorter. But just the physique he plays with, his technique, the way he plays he's a weights player. Ten will light you up in a heartbeat and don't care nothing about it. And JJ, y'all saw the video of what he did to the guy freshman year at Ole Miss. It speaks for itself." Shenker said he stays in touch with Pegues. He said he and his teammates understand why players make decisions that are best for them but added Pegues and Tennison will be missed.

Hall says he "hates" that Pegues and Tennison left because of the unique aspect they added to the defense and the ways they helped Auburn grow. But as a Mississippi native, Hall gets to add Pegues and Tennison to the list of players he hears from after battling a home-state rival. "Those games do mean a lot to me just because of bragging rights," Hall said. "As soon as the game is over, you can call them and say 'I'm in the locker room and we just beat y'all.' And then it's the other way around. They'll call me and say 'Ah, you just lost.' So I'm mad at them and I'm blocking them for two or three weeks instead of them blocking me for two or three weeks. It's all fun and games, but obviously it comes down to winning a championship so we all love each other but at that time we're on the field, it's not the same." - The Clarion Ledger

  07/21/22 - Jonathan MingoSr/2023, Mississippi, 6-2, 220 (DS#11 WR) + More +

Alabama football defensive back Eli Ricks hasn't taken a snap with the Crimson Tide, but his conference peers still regard him as elite. On Day 1 of SEC Media Days, Ole Miss football wide receiver Jonathan Mingo said Ricks is the defensive back he wants to face the most. "A matchup (I'm) looking forward to is, probably, (Eli) Ricks from Alabama, a transfer from LSU," Mingo said. "I watched his game. He's a really good DB. We went to a couple of camps together back in high school, so definitely something I'm looking forward to." Mingo acknowledged he is ready to face any player after missing time last season because of a foot injury but has Nov. 12 circled on his calendar. He caught 22 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns in six games. - The Clarion Ledger

On pace to break a program record, James Madison continued to see a rise in football ticket sales as the calendar turned to July. But the Dukes also lagged a bit behind some of their new league rivals in the Sun Belt Conference. As of Tuesday, JMU had sold more than 7,300 season tickets for its debut season in the Sun Belt. The Dukes, longtime members of the Colonial Athletic Association, are making the transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

While the Dukes have easily led the CAA in attendance in recent years with multiple sellouts at Bridgeforth Stadium, which seats 24,877, JMU's record for season tickets sold in a single year is 7,500. The school remains on track to easily surpass that total. "We are currently at 7,368 season tickets sold," JMU assistant athletic director for communications Kevin Warner said earlier this week. "Last year, we sold 6,853 season tickets total. From a year-to-date comparison, we are 938 season tickets ahead of this point last year." That's a 14.5 percent increase from July of 2021. Single-game tickets also went on sale at the start of July, with the Dukes seeing a massive increase in that category over a year ago. - Daily News-Record

  07/17/22 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy offered up a new adjective to describe quarterback Spencer Sanders. "He has now become a magician in our offense," Gundy said from the stage on Wednesday at Big 12 Media Days at AT&T Stadium. Magician. Strong word, but not out of bounds for a guy who is entering his fourth year as the Cowboys' starting QB. It's also a bit of ammo for Sanders' vocal detractors, mostly from the social media realm - those who might believe Sanders disappears a little too often. Like, for instance, the last time he was in this stadium, when he threw four interceptions in the 21-16 loss to Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game. Such is life with Sanders, whose inconsistencies early in his career made him a polarizing figure among Cowboy fans. Many support their quarterback. Others find it hard to live with the mistakes.

Sanders knows the haters are out there. "There's gonna be people that still hate me to this day because of that game," Sanders said. "I carry the chip on my shoulder, I put a smile on my face. I wake up and call my mom every day, and I go to work." Sanders made strides in his level of consistency last year. He set career highs for passing yards (2,839), passing touchdowns (20) and rushing yards (668), plus a career low for missed games, sitting out only the opener because of COVID-19 protocols. Prior to last season, he had never gone two consecutive games without a turnover, but did it three times. And he had just two turnovers during a six-game stretch from mid-October to late November when the Cowboys thrust themselves into the College Football Playoff race. "Spencer has been fantastic for us," Gundy said. "He knows (the offense). He can run it fast. He understands. The middle toward the end of last year he started to make really quality decisions in a short amount of time, which is very important in quarterback play in our opinion." - Daily Oklahoman

Between the creation of the transfer portal and the ability to play immediately, players across college athletics have been able to leave situations they didn't believe to be beneficial to them in recent years and suit up for a new team the following season. That increased level of movement hit a high mark this offseason as several high-profile quarterbacks have departed the Big 12 - and several others have replaced them. Oklahoma lost Caleb Williams to USC, where he rejoined former coach Lincoln Riley, and watched Spencer Rattler head to South Carolina, but new coach Brent Venables replaced them with UCF's Dillon Gabriel. Texas added Ohio State's Quinn Ewers, the No. 1-ranked high school prospect last season, to compete with Hudson Card for the starting role after Casey Thompson headed to Nebraska.

Former Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is at West Virginia, Kansas State added Nebraska's Adrian Martinez and Gerry Bohanon landed at USF after Blake Shapen won Baylor's spring quarterback competition. With Iowa State's Brock Purdy drafted in the seventh round by the San Francisco 49ers, only four teams still have a quarterback who finished last season for them: Oklahoma State and Spencer Sanders, who led the Big 12 in total offense last season; TCU and Max Duggan; Texas Tech and Tyler Shough; and Kansas and Jalon Daniels. - Lawrence Journal World

Oklahoma State football isn't the preseason front-runner, but the Cowboys are considered contenders near the top of the conference. The Big 12 Conference released its media-selected preseason football poll Thursday afternoon, and Oklahoma State checked in at third place, trailing Baylor and Oklahoma. Of 41 ballots, nine first-place votes went to the Cowboys. After securing the No. 1 spot for six consecutive years, the Sooners are no longer the preseason favorite. For the first time, that spot belongs to Baylor, the defending conference champion that kept OSU a few inches away from a Big 12 title. The Bears collected 17 first-place votes, and OU stands at No. 2 with 12 first-place votes.

Baylor garnered 365 points in the poll, OU had 354 and OSU received 342. There is a significant drop-off between OSU and the No. 4 team - Texas, which picked up 289 points. The first-place votes were spread among five teams. No. 4 Texas received two first-place votes, and a single vote went to No. 6 Iowa State. The Cowboys advanced one spot from their preseason standing in the 2021 poll, which showed more agreement among voters than this year's poll did. In 2021, Oklahoma picked up 35 of the 39 first-place votes, and all others went to Iowa State. - Stillwater Press

  07/07/22 - Jaxson DartSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-2, 223 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Quarterbacks across college football hit the transfer portal harder than anyone this offseason, with big names across the country finding new homes. On3's J.D. PicKell decided to name his top five transfer portal quarterbacks recently on an episode of "The Hard Count with J.D. PicKell," and Ole Miss Rebels' signal-caller Jaxson Dart checks in at the No. 3 spot in the countdown. Dart was one of the most celebrated high school quarterbacks in America coming out of high school. According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2021 cycle, the Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) product was ranked as the No. 7 quarterback prospect in America.

While he was at USC last year in his freshman year, he flashed that same mesmerizing ability, but also showed the propensity to make too many high-risk throws-tossing five interceptions. After the Trojans brought in Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams to be their trigger man in the offseason, Dart hit the transfer portal and ended up at Ole Miss. Dart struggled mightily in the Ole Miss spring game behind their second-string offensive line, throwing two interceptions, one of which was a horrible pick six. - On3.com

DeShawn Gaddie has been a consistently productive player for UNT in each of the last two seasons and has seen time at cornerback and safety. The junior finished with 57 tackles and 6 pass breakups last season. Gaddie has started 20 games over the last two years and emerged from spring practice projected to start at cornerback. Gaddie is one of UNT's most experienced players on defense and should be in for a big season. - Denton Record

  05/23/22 - Jordan SmartrSr/2026, Mississippi, 5-10, 185 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Jordan Smart was intrigued by the idea of playing for North Texas all the way back to his days as a star wide receiver for Round Rock. Smart took a bit of a detour but will finally get the chance to play for UNT after committing to the Mean Green this week. The 5-foot-11 speedster signed with UT-Permian Basin and spent two years at the Division II school. He entered the transfer portal after a standout season last fall in the hope that he could make the jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision level. "This was the opportunity I've been seeking," Smart said Friday afternoon of committing to UNT. "I'm glad God put it on the table for me." Smart elected to transfer after catching 45 passes for 587 yards and eight touchdowns last season at UTPB. He posted 14 catches for 294 yards in his final two games of the season. That late surge led UNT, Texas State and UNLV as well as a host of schools that compete on the Football Championship Subdivision level to offer Smart a scholarship after he entered the portal. - Denton Record
