  11/27/20 - *Rashod BatemanJr/2021, Minnesota, 6-0, 190 (DS#6 WR) + More +

Fleck said in a statement he fully supports Bateman, who had two years of eligibility left, pursuing his dream. "It was a joy to watch Rashod develop into an All-American receiver on the field and a strong, positive advocate for social change off of it," Fleck said. "He is one of the best to ever represent Minnesota." The Gophers first announced a one-day halt to practice Monday night before formally shutting down the team the next day. The team announced 15 positive cases, nine players and six staff, with even more presumed positives just awaiting confirmation results.

Returning for the Northwestern game Dec. 5 is in focus, though Wisconsin and Maryland, the other Big Ten teams that have experienced outbreaks, both needed two weeks to control their spread. Beyond Northwestern, just Nebraska on Dec. 12 and a to-be-determined ninth game on Dec. 19, slated as an East-division matchup based on the standings, remain for the Gophers. The potential for a bowl game is nebulous, considering the pandemic has affected the number of games and the eligibility requirements. Last season, Bateman caught 60 passes for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns as part of a fierce receiver tandem with Tyler Johnson, now of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But in the offseason, a bout with COVID-19 gave him similar symptoms to a bad flu, with the addition of losing his sense of taste and smell. But in the six weeks Bateman was declared for the 2021 NFL draft, living off-campus in a downtown Minneapolis condo, he realized just how much he missed his team. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

  11/25/20 - *Rashod BatemanJr/2021, Minnesota, 6-0, 190 (DS#6 WR) + More +

Minnesota star wide receiver Rashod Bateman decided Wednesday to end his season early out of concern over COVID-19, the day after the Gophers canceled their game against Wisconsin due to a rise in cases within the program. Bateman, a widely projected first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft who was the Big Ten Receiver of the Year award winner in 2019, made his announcement on Twitter.

Bateman had COVID-19 this summer and initially opted out of his junior season in August, shortly before the Big Ten shelved fall sports. When the conference enhanced COVID-19 protocols and relaunched the schedule, Bateman rejoined the Gophers and had his eligibility restored by the NCAA. Bateman had 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 13 games last season, helping Minnesota go 11-2 and finish 10th in the final Associated Press poll. Bateman had 36 catches for 472 yards and two touchdowns in five games for the Gophers (2-3) this year. Chris Autman-Bell is next on the team with 14 receptions for 315 yards and one score. - AP College Football

After rushing 25 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns, Gophers running back Mo Ibrahim left Friday's game with an injury. Fleck said head trainer Mike Sypniak decided they needed to pull Ibrahim, "especially moving forward, if we want to be able to have him in the future. You have to be able to shut him down and those are hard decisions to make, especially with the way the game is going. We are going to need him." - Pioneer Press

Josh Aune's interception with 44 seconds left at the Minnesota 13-yard line after a disputed penalty on Purdue gave the beleaguered Gophers defense a big lift and preserved a 34-31 victory over the Boilermakers on Friday night. Jack Plummer completed 35 of 42 passes for 367 yards and three scores in his first start of the season for Purdue, which took the ball with 2:01 left at its 39. The Boilermakers, boosted by a career-high 15 receptions for 116 yards from Rondale Moore in his long-awaited return, moved in position for what they believed was a 19-yard touchdown catch by tight end Payne Durham in the final minute. Durham was flagged for offensive pass interference, angering the Purdue sideline after replays revealed scant evidence of a foul. Aune picked Plummer off on the next play. Mohamed Ibrahim, the FBS leader in rushing yards per game, scored his third touchdown of the game - and 13th of the season - early in the fourth quarter to give Minnesota a 34-24 lead before a missed extra point. - AP College Football

More and more Mo Ibrahim has been a great thing for the Gophers offense in the last two weeks. After a 41-carry, 202-yard and four-touchdown performance in the loss to Maryland last Friday, Ibrahim did more on fewer carries in a 41-14 win over Illinois at Memorial Stadium. Mo Ibrahim again tied a program record with four rushing touchdowns and tied his person best with 224 yards and did it on a relatively light load of 30 carries. With two touchdowns in the opener against Michigan, Ibrahim is the only Big Ten running back with 10 TDs in three games in the past 20 years, according to ESPN. And Ibrahim is first Big Ten player with at least 140 yards and two TDs in three games since Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott in 2014. "I think he's one of the most special backs in America," Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said. - Pioneer Press

  11/08/20 - *Rashod BatemanJr/2021, Minnesota, 6-0, 190 (DS#6 WR) + More +

Two games, and two losses, into the Gophers' 2020 football season. That's likely not what Rashod Bateman envisioned when he decided to return to the team after originally opting out in August. The reigning Big Ten receiver of the year put up solid numbers - nine catches for 101 yards - in the season-opening loss to Michigan, but he did not visit the end zone. He then had five receptions for 62 yards as the Gophers relied heavily on the run game in the overtime loss at Maryland. On a beautiful, sunny, 73-degree Saturday, however, that all changed as Bateman became the X factor of the Minnesota offense in a 41-14 victory over Illinois at Memorial Stadium. Sure, running back Mohamed Ibrahim had 30 rushes for 224 yards and four touchdowns, but it was Bateman who set the tone early, when the Gophers showed that this weekend would be different from the past two.

"Rashod played really well. The rest of the receivers played really well," Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said. "When we're balanced like that, that's who we are when we're at our best." The junior would collect a career-high 10 receptions for 154 yards - including eight catches for 125 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Gophers built a 28-7 lead. Both the production of Bateman and the threat he presented helped the Gophers average 7.5 yards per play. "He's a huge playmaker, and we had opportunities to get him the ball," quarterback Tanner Morgan said. "He did a great job of getting open and making plays." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

  11/07/20 - Mohamed IbrahimrSr/2023, Minnesota, 5-08, 203 (DS#22 RB) + More +

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for four touchdowns and Tanner Morgan threw for one more and Minnesota beat depleted Illinois 41-14 on Saturday. Ibrahim now has back-to-back games in which he has scored four rushing touchdowns for Minnesota (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten). Illinois (0-3, 0-3) had 12 players out due to COVID-19 protocols and was down to fourth-string QB Coran Taylor. Starter Brandon Peters and backup Isaiah Washington are out, and third-string QB Matt Robinson remains unavailable after suffering a leg injury early in the Purdue game last week.

Taylor wasn't awful, going 6 of 17 through the air for a touchdown and no interceptions. He suffered what appeared to be a hand injury on his throwing arm early in the second half but remained in the game despite obvious throwing difficulties. One bright spot for Illinois was often-injured running back Mike Epstein, who rushed for 108 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown. - AP College Football

Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim carried the ball 41 times in a 45-44 overtime loss at Maryland. That was the most attempts by a Gophers player since Laurence Maroney ran 43 times against Wisconsin in 2005 and most nationally since Air Force's Isaiah Sanders had 44 attempts against Utah State in 2017. Ibrahim finished with 207 yards. Maryland's Jake Funk had a game-high 221 yards on 21 carries. Those were the only 200-yard games of the week. - AP College Football

  10/28/20 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan blames himself first for the 49-24 loss to Michigan this past Saturday. Even though it was offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr.'s first game at the helm, even though starting offensive linemen Daniel Faalele and Curtis Dunlap Jr., were out for undisclosed reasons, even though it was the first game in a delayed-but-breakneck Big Ten season, Morgan would readily take sole responsibility for the disappointing show. "At the end of the day, things run through me," Morgan said Tuesday. "And I have to be better for our team to be successful, and I will be." Morgan completed 18-of-31 passes for 197 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The cobbled-together O-line allowed five sacks on Morgan, though the quarterback generously said he could have avoided some of those with better pocket movement. The Gophers' first series looked pretty strong, but the execution fell off after that. Consistently implementing plays at a high level will be Morgan's focus before facing Maryland on the road Friday night - giving the Gophers one less day than usual to correct mistakes. "Looking at what happened is not an opportunity of, 'Woe is me,' because failure is quitting, and that's something that we'll never do," Morgan said. "...We're looking at it as an opportunity to take it and say, 'OK, how can I do better?' What do I need to do better? And how am I going to be better in that aspect?" - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Judging by the schools that showed interest, Mariano Sori-Marin appeared bound for the Ivy League. The linebacker from Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill., caught the attention of Brown, Cornell, Harvard, Penn and Yale in 2017, and his cerebral approach looked like a good fit with any of those schools. "I like studying," Sori-Marin said. "People think of me as a little bit of a nerd sometimes in academics, and that translates over to football." One person's nerd is another person's student of the game, and that's what Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and his staff found when they recruited Sori-Marin. Three years later, the emerging leader will play a key role for a Minnesota defense hit hard by graduation. "We expect big things out of him, and I know he expects big things out of himself," said Fleck, whose 21st-ranked Gophers open their coronavirus-delayed season Saturday night against No. 18 Michigan at TCF Bank Stadium.

"If there's one person that's going to put more pressure on himself than me, it's going to be Mariano." With three-year starter Thomas Barber graduated and Kamal Martin off to the Green Bay Packers, the Gophers must replace a duo that combined for 429 tackles over the past three seasons. Sori-Marin, a 6-3, 245-pound junior, started seven games last year and showed the versatility to play the Mike (middle), Will (weakside) and Sam (strongside) positions. "Learning from guys like Thomas Barber and Kamal, who were exceptional students of the game - constantly doing film study, teaching me things - I was able to take that and help accelerate my game," said Sori-Marin, whose 42 tackles are most among any returning Gophers linebacker. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Playing Robin to Bateman's Batman will be Autman-Bell, a junior with a knack for big-game heroics. His incredible toe-tapping TD catch to force OT against Fresno State and his tunnel screen TD against Penn State were two of the most impactful plays for the Gophers in 2019. Look for an increase on his stats from last year (28 catches, 371 yards, five TDs). - Minneapolis Star Tribune

  10/19/20 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

For the second consecutive Gophers home game, the eyes of the college football world will be on TCF Bank Stadium. ESPN announced Saturday night that its "College GameDay" preview show will visit the University of Minnesota on Saturday for the season opener between the No. 24 Gophers and No. 19 Michigan, which will be a national broadcast on ABC (KSTP-Ch. 5) at 6:30 p.m. At stake for the Gophers and Wolverines will be the Little Brown Jug, a trophy that dates to 1903. "College GameDay," which will air from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, visited the university for the first time in last year's regular-season finale, a 38-17 loss to Wisconsin. There will be a much different feel for the visit this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Last Nov. 30, fans packed the Northrop Mall to see Rece Davis, Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, guest picker Eric Decker and Lee Corso break down the Gophers vs. Badgers. This year, fans won't be permitted to attend the show, and the set location inside TCF Bank Stadium won't allow for public viewing. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

With Carter Coughlin in the NFL, Mafe is poised to step in as the Gophers' top pass rusher. The athletic 6-4, 260-pounder has NFL-like attributes such as a 40½-inch vertical jump and a 4.57-second 40-yard dash. Mafe had 14 tackles, 3½ tackles for loss and three sacks last year, and those stats should increase in his junior season. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
