Soon, Rashod Bateman will be catching passes from 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. The Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night selected Bateman, a highly productive wide receiver for the Gophers, with the 27th pick of the first round of the NFL draft. Bateman is the Gophers' first first-round draft pick since running back Laurence Maroney in 2006, and he'll join a team that has advanced to the AFC playoffs for three consecutive years. "I can't even put it into words right now," Bateman said during a video conference after he was picked. "Obviously, I look up to Lamar a lot. To be a teammate, I know I'll learn a lot from him. I'm just excited to get to work with him."

Bateman, the fifth receiver selected in the first round, believes he's ready to make an immediate impact with Baltimore. The Ravens were last in the NFL with 182.4 passing yards per game last season, and Bateman joins a team whose top receiving targets are Marquise Brown (58 catches, 769 yards, eight touchdowns last year) and free-agent signee Sammy Watkins (37 catches, 421 yards, two TDs with Kansas City last year). - Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Gophers football program's "Pro Day" has been scheduled for April 1 at the U's indoor facility in Minneapolis, the NFL said Thursday. This date is especially important for aspiring NFL players this year due to the league's pandemic-related decision to not host workouts at its scouting combine in Indianapolis. This will be the best chance for players - primarily receiver Rashod Bateman and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste - to display their speed, strength and agility in front of NFL front-office personnel. - Pioneer Press

Fleck said in a statement he fully supports Bateman, who had two years of eligibility left, pursuing his dream. "It was a joy to watch Rashod develop into an All-American receiver on the field and a strong, positive advocate for social change off of it," Fleck said. "He is one of the best to ever represent Minnesota." The Gophers first announced a one-day halt to practice Monday night before formally shutting down the team the next day. The team announced 15 positive cases, nine players and six staff, with even more presumed positives just awaiting confirmation results.

Returning for the Northwestern game Dec. 5 is in focus, though Wisconsin and Maryland, the other Big Ten teams that have experienced outbreaks, both needed two weeks to control their spread. Beyond Northwestern, just Nebraska on Dec. 12 and a to-be-determined ninth game on Dec. 19, slated as an East-division matchup based on the standings, remain for the Gophers. The potential for a bowl game is nebulous, considering the pandemic has affected the number of games and the eligibility requirements. Last season, Bateman caught 60 passes for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns as part of a fierce receiver tandem with Tyler Johnson, now of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But in the offseason, a bout with COVID-19 gave him similar symptoms to a bad flu, with the addition of losing his sense of taste and smell. But in the six weeks Bateman was declared for the 2021 NFL draft, living off-campus in a downtown Minneapolis condo, he realized just how much he missed his team. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota star wide receiver Rashod Bateman decided Wednesday to end his season early out of concern over COVID-19, the day after the Gophers canceled their game against Wisconsin due to a rise in cases within the program. Bateman, a widely projected first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft who was the Big Ten Receiver of the Year award winner in 2019, made his announcement on Twitter.

Bateman had COVID-19 this summer and initially opted out of his junior season in August, shortly before the Big Ten shelved fall sports. When the conference enhanced COVID-19 protocols and relaunched the schedule, Bateman rejoined the Gophers and had his eligibility restored by the NCAA. Bateman had 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 13 games last season, helping Minnesota go 11-2 and finish 10th in the final Associated Press poll. Bateman had 36 catches for 472 yards and two touchdowns in five games for the Gophers (2-3) this year. Chris Autman-Bell is next on the team with 14 receptions for 315 yards and one score. - AP College Football

Two games, and two losses, into the Gophers' 2020 football season. That's likely not what Rashod Bateman envisioned when he decided to return to the team after originally opting out in August. The reigning Big Ten receiver of the year put up solid numbers - nine catches for 101 yards - in the season-opening loss to Michigan, but he did not visit the end zone. He then had five receptions for 62 yards as the Gophers relied heavily on the run game in the overtime loss at Maryland. On a beautiful, sunny, 73-degree Saturday, however, that all changed as Bateman became the X factor of the Minnesota offense in a 41-14 victory over Illinois at Memorial Stadium. Sure, running back Mohamed Ibrahim had 30 rushes for 224 yards and four touchdowns, but it was Bateman who set the tone early, when the Gophers showed that this weekend would be different from the past two.

"Rashod played really well. The rest of the receivers played really well," Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said. "When we're balanced like that, that's who we are when we're at our best." The junior would collect a career-high 10 receptions for 154 yards - including eight catches for 125 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Gophers built a 28-7 lead. Both the production of Bateman and the threat he presented helped the Gophers average 7.5 yards per play. "He's a huge playmaker, and we had opportunities to get him the ball," quarterback Tanner Morgan said. "He did a great job of getting open and making plays." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

For nearly two weeks this summer, Rashod Bateman's head and body ached, altering between chills and night sweats. Like a bad flu, but with the disconcerting addition of losing his sense of taste and smell. The Gophers star receiver was one of the coronavirus pandemic's victims. He didn't know how he contracted COVID-19 because he'd tried to be cautious. But he had taken a California trip on a break from voluntary workouts, and a test later confirmed he and some others who traveled were positive. "Just being scared and not knowing what it can do to my body because nobody really had any answers," Bateman said Thursday. "And then I just felt like it wasn't safe to play football this year after going through that." Bateman has asthma, which made the experience even scarier. It took a couple of days after his sickness to begin feeling normal, and it was enough for him to decide to opt out of the 2020 football season Aug. 4. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

University of Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman's eligibility was restored by the NCAA and he is now able to compete for the Gophers this season. Bateman will wear No. 0 this season, becoming the first Gopher ever to do so. He is switching from No. 13 to No. 0 because there is zero tolerance for racism in Minnesota's culture and it is a call to action to end racism in our society. Bateman, who previously announced he was forgoing this season because of personal health concerns related to COVID-19, has played in 26 games for Minnesota and in two years has already established himself as one of the best receivers ever to wear the Maroon and Gold. He has 111 career catches (tied for 12th in school history) for 1,923 yards (tied for eighth in school history) and 17 touchdowns (tied for fifth in school history). - Minnesota Football

When Rashod Bateman told his Gophers teammates he was coming back to campus in hopes of playing this season, they thought he was joking. "I didn't think it was a possibility," running back Mohamed Ibrahim said in a Tuesday video news conference. "… So just understanding that he can come back, that was a big boost to the whole team." Can, but not necessarily will, as Bateman's second go at a collegiate career is still foggy. Much like the Big Ten Conference as a whole, Bateman changed his mind. The reigning Big Ten Receiver of the Year opted out of the 2020 season on Aug. 4, citing health concerns for playing during the coronavirus pandemic. The conference later canceled all fall sports Aug. 11 but then reversed that decision last week, setting up a delayed fall season to start Oct. 24.

New safety measures, including daily testing, influenced Bateman to decide to play instead of focusing on the 2021 NFL draft, where he is a projected first-round pick. But his path back to college football isn't as simple as just returning to the team. Bateman is one of several players across the country in the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement process to regain his remaining two years of eligibility. When he signed with an agent and accepted benefits - including money for housing, transportation and training the past six weeks - that terminated his amateur status, unless the NCAA grants him a special waiver. "There's going to be a lot of other things we have to do moving forward for him to be cleared, and that's down the road a little bit," Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said. "But he's doing everything he can to handle today, and that's all we told him to focus on. Just focus on today, continue to get better. And a lot of this is out of your control. But again, we know the right measures are being taken, that's for sure." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Former Gophers' receiver Rashod Bateman was one of 23 players who earned preseason All-America honors from the Associated Press despite not actually playing in the fall. Bateman opted out of what would have been his junior season in early August before the Big Ten ultimately called off fall competition a week later. The reigning Big Ten Receiver of the Year planned to focus on the 2021 NFL Draft, where he is a projected first-round pick, possible going in the top 10. The Georgia native was a third-team AP All-America selection last season, amassing 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 catches. He made the second team in this preseason vote from the media. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota star receiver Rashod Bateman has opted out of the 2020 college football season and will prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft, he announced Tuesday on Instagram. Bateman, the reigning Big Ten Receiver of the Year and a projected first-round draft pick, called it "the hardest decision" of his life. He joins a growing list of college players deciding not to play - if there is a season this fall - including Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley and Illinois running back Ra'Von Bonner. As a sophomore, Bateman helped lead the resurgence of Gophers football in 2019. He had 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns during Minnesota's 11-2 season, which was capped with a win over Auburn in the Outback Bowl. He said he wanted to bring a Big Ten championship to Minnesota, but the situation has changed. - Detroit News

The NFL draft is barely a week in the rearview mirror and is about the furthest thing away on annual sports calendars from happening again, so naturally we're talking now about … the NFL draft? Yes, I've largely ignored all the 2021 draft projections. But now more than ever, anything with a local angle and on-field focus tends to catch my eye. So here's something: The site Foxbet.com created a prop bet with odds on the most likely No. 1 overall pick in 2021. The clear favorite, of course, is Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

But 30 players are listed in all. And down toward the long shots, you'll find a very familiar name: Gophers wide receiver Rashod Bateman, at 100 to 1 odds. Wait, you might be thinking. Didn't Tyler Johnson, the Gophers' other star receiver in 2019, just get drafted in the fifth round? What gives? Well, Bateman has the size (6-2, 200-plus pounds), hands and big-play ability to attract more NFL chatter (even though I think Johnson was a steal for Tampa Bay and will be a very good pro). He's been termed a "dark horse" to be the first receiver taken next year and has shown up as a possible first-round selection on some of those "way-too-early" 2021 mock drafts I've been trying to avoid. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
