 Mariano Sori-Marin, Minnesota, Player News

Mariano Sori-Marin knew he shouldn't touch the hot stove. Gophers coaches had warned of getting burned by being too curious and straying from discipline. Still, there Sori-Marin was, on a blitz against Maryland in 2020, trying to chase down Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. Problem was, Sori-Marin drifted too far inside on a twist with end Thomas Rush, enabling Tagovailoa to spin outside and scamper 39 yards for a touchdown in the Terrapins' 45-44 overtime win. Two years later, Sori-Marin, the Gophers fifth-year senior inside linebacker, has learned from such miscues to become a leader on a solid defense. Entering his third season as a starter, Sori-Marin and the Gophers will try to pick up where they left off last year in the Sept. 1 season opener against New Mexico State at Huntington Bank Stadium. "You can tell a kid that the stove is hot - and I got that coaching point countless times - but until you touch the stove, sometimes it has to be touched for you to truly learn what it takes,'' Sori-Marin said.

Sori-Marin embodies and embraces the "failure is growth'' mantra instilled by coach P.J. Fleck and the "attention to detail'' approach demanded by defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. The 6-3, 245-pounder from Mokena, Ill., helped the Gophers finish third nationally in total defense (fewest yards allowed) with 278.8 per game last year. Along the way, he ranked second on the team with 85 tackles and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention. He aims to keep building his game and help his team improve on last year's 9-4 record, a season in which the Gophers were a win over Iowa away from advancing to the Big Ten Championship Game. "When I look back at my early career, I didn't have as much success as I probably would have liked," Sori-Marin said from Big Ten Media Days in July, "but I understand now that it's part of the process and has made me into a better linebacker and the player I am now." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Judging by the schools that showed interest, Mariano Sori-Marin appeared bound for the Ivy League. The linebacker from Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill., caught the attention of Brown, Cornell, Harvard, Penn and Yale in 2017, and his cerebral approach looked like a good fit with any of those schools. "I like studying," Sori-Marin said. "People think of me as a little bit of a nerd sometimes in academics, and that translates over to football." One person's nerd is another person's student of the game, and that's what Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and his staff found when they recruited Sori-Marin. Three years later, the emerging leader will play a key role for a Minnesota defense hit hard by graduation. "We expect big things out of him, and I know he expects big things out of himself," said Fleck, whose 21st-ranked Gophers open their coronavirus-delayed season Saturday night against No. 18 Michigan at TCF Bank Stadium.

"If there's one person that's going to put more pressure on himself than me, it's going to be Mariano." With three-year starter Thomas Barber graduated and Kamal Martin off to the Green Bay Packers, the Gophers must replace a duo that combined for 429 tackles over the past three seasons. Sori-Marin, a 6-3, 245-pound junior, started seven games last year and showed the versatility to play the Mike (middle), Will (weakside) and Sam (strongside) positions. "Learning from guys like Thomas Barber and Kamal, who were exceptional students of the game - constantly doing film study, teaching me things - I was able to take that and help accelerate my game," said Sori-Marin, whose 42 tackles are most among any returning Gophers linebacker. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

As the Gophers prepare to start spring football next week, coach P.J. Fleck said the coaches know there will be some rebuilding, even as they carry the momentum from one of the best seasons in program history - an 11-2 finish, capped by a 31-24 victory over Auburn in the Outback Bowl. "We might even get a little younger on defense. As we have gotten older on offense, now we're coming back to be able to build that defense," Fleck said. "We may be a little younger, a little more inexperienced than we were last year. But as a whole, we have to find a way to be better."

The club lost 15 players to graduation last year, nine on defense. "That's where we're going to need a lot of guys to fill in depth," Fleck said. "The Carter Coughlins are not here anymore, the Kamal Martins and Blake Cashmans and Antoine Winfields are gone, Thomas Barber is gone," Fleck said. "Who are going to be the guys that fill in for those roles? A guy like [junior linebacker] Mariano Sori-Marin, who played last year, is going to have a huge role in what we're going to do. [Redshirt sophomore linebacker] Braelen Oliver, who played a lot last year, is going to have a huge role for us as we continue to go this year. He has matured and stepped up. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
