  10/01/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Cameron Ward threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State beat California 28-9 on Saturday, despite Ward being intercepted twice in the end zone. Renard Bell caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown for Washington State (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12), which played four of its first five games at home. Jack Plummer completed 23 of 33 passes for 273 yards for California (3-2, 1-1), which was coming off a big win over Arizona. Both teams scored over 40 points last weekend, but points were scarce for most of this game. After a scoreless first quarter, Washington State got a 34-yard punt return by Robert Ferrel, coupled with a personal foul on the Bears, to start a drive on the Cal 20-yard line. Jaylen Jenkins ran the ball in from the 2 for a 7-0 lead.

Cal drove to the WSU 24, but had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Dario Longhetto to pull within 7-3. On WSU's next drive, Ward was intercepted in the end zone by Cal safety Daniel Scott. The Golden Bears advanced to midfield, but Plummer was sacked on consecutive plays and they had to punt. Washington State kept the 7-3 lead at halftime in a defensive battle, with each team barely topping 100 yards of offense. Washington State had the first drive of the second half, and Ward quickly connected with Bell on a 47-yard completion to the Cal 17. Ferrel caught a 17-yard touchdown pass barely a minute into the half for a 14-3 lead. Cal went three-and-out, and Washington State advanced to the Bears' 21-yard line. But a scrambling Ward was intercepted in the end zone again, this time by Craig Woodson, to kill the drive. - Washington State/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Cameron Ward threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as Washington State pounded Colorado State 38-7. Washington State (3-0) scored on its first four possessions to put this game away early. Ward completed 26 of 36 passes and was intercepted once. Donovan Ollie and De'Zhaun Stribling each caught two touchdown passes. Freshman quarterback Clay Millen completed 24 of 34 passes for 211 yards for Colorado State (0-3), which has lost eight consecutive games dating to last season. Washington State sacked Millen seven times and limited Colorado State to 37 rushing yards on 30 carries.

The Cougars marched 46 yards in four plays on their first possession, with Ward throwing a 17-yard touchdown pass to Ollie for a 7-0 lead. The Cougars took over at midfield again on their second series and Ward fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to Stribling for a 14-0 lead just five minutes into the game. Cayden Camper missed a 44-yard field-goal attempt for Colorado State and WSU marched 73 yards, with Ward hitting Stribling for a 19-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead with more than 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Ward found Ollie for a 2-yard touchdown pass to cap an 82-yard drive that gave WSU to a 28-0 lead at halftime. Washington State went into the locker room with a 255-82 advantage in yards gained, along with four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Colorado State rushed 18 times in the first half, for just 4 net yards. - Washington State/AP College Football

Miami defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor looked good in practice Wednesday. Coaches expect him to be a full-speed player on Saturday. The sophomore, who spent the last two years with the West Virginia Mountaineers before transferring to Miami in April, logged four tackles, a sack and a pass defended in his debut for the Hurricanes in Week 1 before sitting out Week 2 with a lower-leg injury.   During his appearance on the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, Nick Saban provided an update on injured receiver Tyler Harrell, stating the Louisville transfer is still dealing with a sprained foot and will not be available for Saturday's 3 p.m. CT kickoff against Louisiana Monroe inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. "He has not been able to practice this week," Saban said. "He will not play in this game. He's kind of day-to-day with this foot [injury] that he has. Hopefully, he'll be back sometime soon." Harrell has yet to make his Alabama debut since joining the team this offseason.

He was seen in a walking boot before the season opener against Utah State on Sept. 3 and did not make the trip to Texas with the team last weekend. Harrell led Louisville averaging 29.06 yards per catch last season, pulling in 18 receptions for 523 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. According to Louisville Report, Cardinals head coach Scott Satterfield said the 6-foot, 194-pound receiver recorded a hand-timed 4.19 time in the 40-yard dash last offseason. - Rivals Alabama

It certainly got a little misty in the end zone early in the third quarter in Oregon's resounding 70-14 victory against Eastern Washington. Cam McCormick, the Ducks' seventh-year tight end who has been beset by injuries since 2018, scored his first touchdown in six years by ramrodding his way into the end zone following a 2-yard catch on a pass from quarterback Bo Nix. And he did it while wearing the No. 18 jersey that once belonged to teammate Spencer Webb, who died in July during an outing at Triangle Lake. "This night is one that I'll always remember," McCormick said. "It was an unreal moment." - Register Guard

  09/04/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Transfer quarterback Cameron Ward threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as Washington State beat scrappy Idaho 24-17 in a season opener to win its 10th consecutive game in a long-running series between two schools whose campuses are located just eight miles apart. Ward completed 25 of 40 passes for Washington State, a Pac-12 team which leads the Battle of the Palouse series 72-17-3. But the Cougars had trouble putting away Idaho, an FCS team from the Big Sky Conference.

It was not until Ward threw a touchdown pass to Jaylen Jenkins with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter, putting Washington State up 24-10, that the Cougars appeared to take control. But Idaho freshman quarterback Gevani McCoy replied with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Dwyer with 6:05 left in the game, cutting the WSU lead to 24-17. Washington State's ensuing drive ate up the clock, but Dean Janikowski missed a 23-yard field-goal attempt wide left with 53 seconds left. McCoy led Idaho down the field, but was intercepted at the goal line by Daiyan Henley to end the threat. - Washington State/AP College Football

The transfer portal has been kind to Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal and defensive line coaches Joe Salave'a and Rod Wright. Cristobal and his staff quickly bolstered the strength of their defensive line thanks to key transfers who will quickly play large roles in the rotation. The combination of newcomers and returnees should make UM's defensive line a formidable unit. "I could definitely say that I've never played on a D-line so deep before," Southern California transfer Jake Lichtenstein said. "It's so much competition and we're all really progressing and pushing each other to get better. It's a lot of fun when you have that many guys that can get the job done."

Lichtenstein is one of five defensive linemen who transferred to Miami this offseason, joining Mitchell Agude, Darrell Jackson, Akheem Mesidor and Antonio Moultrie. Lichtenstein, Jackson and Moultrie are primarily interior defensive linemen, while Agude and Mesidor will line up on the edge. A benefit for the Hurricanes will be the experience all of the linemen have. Agude (who transferred from UCLA), Lichtenstein (USC) and Moultrie (Alabama-Birmingham) are all sixth-year redshirt seniors. Mesidor is a third-year sophomore who received plenty of playing time at West Virginia, and Jackson played in 13 games for Maryland last season. "It's not like a bunch of dudes who never played came and transferred here," Lichtenstein said. "We all have experience." - Sun Sentinel
