  11/12/22 - Kamren KinchensJr/2024, Miami, 5-11, 203 (DS#5 FS) + More +

Kamren Kinchens had three of Miami's four interceptions and scored on a 99-yard pick-six, freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown filled in for Tyler Van Dyke and passed for three touchdowns, and the Hurricanes routed Georgia Tech 35-14 on Saturday. Jaylan Knighton ran 16 times for 118 yards and Brown added 87 yards rushing for Miami (5-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which broke out of its recent offensive doldrums to net 362 yards, 262 on the ground. Freshman quarterback Zach Pyron, starting in Jeff Sims' spot for the second straight game, was 12 of 21 passing for Georgia Tech (4-6, 3-4). Zach Gibson, a transfer from Akron, took charge of the offense on the first drive of the fourth quarter with Pyron injured late in the third and quickly threw a deep interception to Kinchens on his second pass that all but ended any remaining suspense in the game.

Brown took charge from there, directing an eight-play, 51-yard drive that ended with Colbie Young catching an 8-yard TD that made it 21-7 with 7:52 remaining. Brown finished 14 of 19 passing for 136 yards. Kinchens, a sophomore cornerback, ran back a pick of Gibson the distance late in the fourth to make it 35-7. It hardly mattered that the Hurricanes were without Van Dyke, the reigning ACC offensive rookie of the year who missed the game with a shoulder injury, and starting running back Henry Parrish Jr., who was didn't play because of an undisclosed injury. Miami had plenty of firepower to handle Georgia Tech. Making his first career collegiate start, Brown connected with Will Mallory on the right side for a 22-yard touchdown that made it 7-0 on the opening possession. It was the Hurricanes' first touchdown in nine-plus quarters, a span of 138 minutes. Tyrique Stevenson intercepted Pyron on a deep ball at the Miami 9 late in the third. Kinchens picked off Pyron at the Miami 3 midway through the first and one possession later, Jaleel Skinner caught a 4-yard pass on the right side to make it 14-0 with 9:26 to go in the second and end a 14-play, 93-yard drive that consumed 7:31. - Miami/AP College Football

  11/05/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami, 6-2, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Cameron Ward threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third, Nakia Watson rushed for 166 yards and a score and Washington State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 52-14 victory against Stanford on Saturday. The Cougars (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and then put the game away with two more TDs in the final 2:09 of the first half. Jaden Hicks also returned a fumble 17 yards for a score in the second quarter as Washington State used four takeaways and 306 yards rushing to get over the frustration of the losing streak. Ward threw for 176 yards with a 7-yard TD pass to Anderson Grover and a 9-yarder to Donovan Ollie on fourth-and-3. Ward also had a 15-yard TD run.

Tanner McKee threw for 236 yards and backup QB Ashton Daniels ran for two scores but Stanford (3-6, 1-6) kept giving the ball away and lost for the sixth straight time to the Cougars. Watson set the tone for Washington State, rushing for 65 yards on the second play from scrimmage to set up Leyton Smithson 3-yard TD run and then scoring on a 41-yard run on the Cougars final play of the half following a fumble by Benjamin Yurosek that made it 42-7. The Cardinal lost six of their first seven conference games for the first time since 2006 - the year before Jim Harbaugh arrived on The Farm to turn Stanford into a contender. But after a long run of success under Harbaugh and current coach David Shaw, things have turned in recent years and Stanford hasn't won more than four games in a season since going 9-4 in 2018. - Washington State/AP College Football

  10/25/22 - Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

The long-awaited debut of Tyler Harrell with Alabama football didn't come with much fanfare. He checked into the Mississippi State game late in the second half with the Crimson Tide holding a sizable lead. Harrell saw six snaps and caught one pass for 12 yards. Harrell, the transfer receiver from Louisville, started the season dealing with a lower-body injury. "It's unfortunate the guy missed a lot of time because of an injury," Nick Saban said Monday at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. "He is making a lot of progress. He does offer something with his speed. That is always something that can benefit you on offense. Want him to continue to improve and hopefully we can create roles for him down the road here that is going to be effective for him and for us."

His debut has been anticipated because of the speed Saban mentioned. Harrell averaged a whopping 29.1 yards per catch in 2021 with Louisville as he caught 18 passes for 523 yards and six touchdowns. The speed was on full display when Harrell ran a 4.24 40-yard dash at Louisville's pro day. That's not far off the NFL Combine record, which is 4.22. This year, Alabama hasn't had a player scare defenses with speed like Jameson Williams did a year ago as he caught 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. - Montgomery Advertiser

OCT 24 PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Damien Martinez, Fr., RB, Oregon State (Lewisville, Texas),...Topped 100 yards for the second consecutive game, totaling 178 rushing with 3 touchdowns to lead Oregon State to a win over Colorado, and giving the Beavers bowl eligibility. 178 yards mark the 3rd-best single-game total by a Pac-12 running back this season. Per PFF, 60 of his 178 yards came after contact. The 3 touchdowns, meanwhile, are tied for the single-game high in the conference in 2022. Had 3 carries of 20 or more yards, including a game-high 40-yard rush. Of his 22 carries in the game, 3 went for touchdowns and additional 10 went for first downs. Martinez has 372 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns over his last 3 games. He's carried the ball 41 times over that stretch, averaging 9.07 yards per carry. The freshman now has an OSU-best 517 rush yards on 79 carries this season, an average of 6.54 per rush. He's also scored five rushing touchdowns. Only the 2nd Oregon State player to win this award since it was created in 2019. LB Omar Speights brought it home in Week 10 of 2019.   Damien Martinez ran for a career-high 178 yards and three touchdowns, and Oregon State's defense turned in another strong performance Saturday night in a 42-9 victory over Colorado. The Beavers (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) have won three straight games and are bowl eligible for the second year in a row after ending a seven-year bowl hiatus last season. Colorado (1-6, 1-3 Pac-12), playing its second game under interim head coach Mike Sanford, was unable to build off the momentum of last week's overtime victory against California. Oregon State extended a 21-3 halftime lead to 28-3 on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Ben Gulbranson to tight end Jack Velling on the opening drive of the third quarter.

On Colorado's first offensive play of the second half, J.T. Shrout's pass intended for tight end Brady Russell was intercepted by cornerback Alex Austin and returned 42 yards for a touchdown. The pick 6 gave the Beavers a 35-3 advantage. The Buffaloes finally scored a touchdown on Jayle Stacks' 1-yard run late in the third quarter to culminate an 80-yard drive. Martinez, who was a workhorse with 22 carries, opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. - Oregon State/AP College Football

  10/20/22 - Javion CohenSr/2024, Miami, 6-4, 324 (DS#11 OG) + More +

The issue of mental health remains front and center within college football and one Alabama starter isn't afraid to discuss it. Offensive guard Javion Cohen over the summer was open about his visit to a rehabilitation center for what he called "mental health reasons" and he spoke more about it Wednesday. Making his first appearance this fall in the interview room, Cohen was asked about opening up about his journey. "It was wonderful," Cohen said. "It wasn't difficult that much because of the support system I had around me. I want to give a lot of props to Coach Saban and the entire staff that have supported me and allowed me to take that time off for my health. That was wonderful." Back in July, Cohen posted on Instagram about the month he spent at a Herren Wellness facility in July.

While sharing photos of the facility and the books he read, Cohen's caption began discussing "the pressure we feel as athletes is insurmountable and can be too much at times." Cohen was the second Alabama offensive lineman who spent time at Herren Wellness as freshmen Dayne Shor also posted about his struggles. Shor later transferred to UConn. Cohen, a junior from Phenix City, returned to Tuscaloosa and has started six of the seven games this season at left guard. There's no stigma surrounding mental health for Cohen. "It wasn't difficult at all sharing because I believe that's something that we all should pay attention to in our day-to-day lives," Cohen said. "It's important to pay attention to your mental health and put that first." - Birmingham News

Among the five Power 5 transfers Alabama landed, all but one have appeared in game action to date. The only who has yet to see the field is Tyler Harrell, a receiver who came from Louisville over the summer. So what's the latest on the speedy senior? Nick Saban was asked about his status on Wednesday's SEC media teleconference. "Yeah, he's been practicing and he actually was available for the last game," Saban said. "He's getting more and more reps, more and more comfortable with what he's doing. And there's the possibility he's getting to the point where we can get to use him some." Saban on Aug. 24 said Harrell was dealing with a sprained foot that limited his reps but was starting to see more practice time leading up to the season opener.

Harrell didn't dress for the first few games. "Look I'm not giving specific details on everybody's injuries but he was out," Saban said when asked Wednesday if the foot injury sidelined him the first seven games. "So what makes the difference?" Harrell was listed on the travel roster for the first time at Tennessee but didn't appear in the game. He warmed up before the Sept. 24 home date with Vanderbilt but didn't make the trip a week later to Arkansas. - Birmingham News

  10/01/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami, 6-2, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Cameron Ward threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State beat California 28-9 on Saturday, despite Ward being intercepted twice in the end zone. Renard Bell caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown for Washington State (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12), which played four of its first five games at home. Jack Plummer completed 23 of 33 passes for 273 yards for California (3-2, 1-1), which was coming off a big win over Arizona. Both teams scored over 40 points last weekend, but points were scarce for most of this game. After a scoreless first quarter, Washington State got a 34-yard punt return by Robert Ferrel, coupled with a personal foul on the Bears, to start a drive on the Cal 20-yard line. Jaylen Jenkins ran the ball in from the 2 for a 7-0 lead.

Cal drove to the WSU 24, but had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Dario Longhetto to pull within 7-3. On WSU's next drive, Ward was intercepted in the end zone by Cal safety Daniel Scott. The Golden Bears advanced to midfield, but Plummer was sacked on consecutive plays and they had to punt. Washington State kept the 7-3 lead at halftime in a defensive battle, with each team barely topping 100 yards of offense. Washington State had the first drive of the second half, and Ward quickly connected with Bell on a 47-yard completion to the Cal 17. Ferrel caught a 17-yard touchdown pass barely a minute into the half for a 14-3 lead. Cal went three-and-out, and Washington State advanced to the Bears' 21-yard line. But a scrambling Ward was intercepted in the end zone again, this time by Craig Woodson, to kill the drive. - Washington State/AP College Football
