  10/17/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

D'Eriq King threw four touchdown passes and No. 13 Miami beat Pittsburgh 31-19 on Saturday. Will Mallory caught two of King's scoring passes as the Hurricanes (4-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from a 42-17 loss at top-ranked Clemson last week. The Panthers (3-3, 2-3) lost their third straight and were without senior quarterback Kenny Pickett, who suffered an ankle injury against Boston College last week. Pickett leads the nation with 1,389 passing yards but didn't travel with the team to South Florida. Redshirt freshman Joey Yellen replaced Pickett, completing 22 of 46 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Kessman kicked four field goals for the Panthers and became Pitt's all-time leader with 57. Kessman surpassed Chris Blewitt, who had 55 field goals from 2013-16. Pitt rallied from a 21-6 deficit with 10 unanswered points on Kessman's record-setting third field goal and Yellen's 1-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Moraga early in the third quarter. Marcus Williams' 38-yard interception return to the Miami 1 set up Moraga's score. But Miami regained its double-digit advantage on King's 45-yard touchdown pass to Mallory. - Miami/AP College Football

  10/17/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Against Clemson, UM's D'Eriq King completed just 2 of 9 passes that were thrown at least 20 yards, with two interceptions. He's now 7 of 29 on those 20-plus-yard passes this season, and that must change significantly for NFL teams to have any interest in him as a quarterback. At this point, King might go undrafted, but it's unclear if he would consider returning for another season at UM - which is permitted because of the NCAA's COVID-19 rules. It's also unclear if he would consider switching positions as a pro, something broached by Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy. - Miami Herald

  10/17/20 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami, 6-2, 209 (DS#16 SS) + More +

Did you see the Hurricane with blood continually trickling down his face in the Clemson game? He's the one who was everywhere - blocking two field goals, forcing a fumble with his shoulder during a ferocious tackle of future first-round draft pick Trevor Lawrence and passionately, desperately screaming encouragement to his teammates to keep fighting. University of Miami safety Bubba Bolden resembled a prize fighter, his ring being the football field, his mantra being to "keep playing fast, keep playing hard, keep playing physical, run to the ball and tackle." "That's what we live by," Bolden, a 6-3, 200-pound redshirt junior, said immediately after No. 1 Clemson dominated then-No. 7 and now-No. 13 UM (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) Saturday night. "We're focused on Pitt. A lot of emotions. No one likes to lose especially not me. I'm not a loser."

The former USC Trojan and first-team Parade All-American, who transferred to UM last year, has certainly proven he's a winner in his first full season on the field for the Hurricanes. As UM prepares to face Pittsburgh (3-2, 2-2) at noon Saturday (ACC Network) at Hard Rock Stadium, Bolden vowed again Wednesday to take that same intensity against a Panthers team that lost its last two games by one point. "When you love a game so much, when you love something that you do and it's your job, you're going to give it your all," said Bolden, who leads UM with 27 tackles and has three forced fumbles, two blocked kicks, an interception, sack, three tackles for loss and a pass breakup in four games. "I've never been one to quit. I've never been one to back down from any fights. You just gotta have that mentality. I'm pretty sure our whole team has that, not only me." - Miami Herald

  10/17/20 - *Brevin JordanJr/2021, Miami, 6-3, 247 (DS#4 TE) + More +

The Miami Hurricanes, coming off their worst passing performance of the season, could be without their leading receiver Saturday when they host the Pittsburgh Panthers at Hard Rock Stadium. Brevin Jordan's status remains questionable Wednesday, Manny Diaz said, as No. 13 Miami prepares for Pittsburgh. "The only guy that'd be questionable is Brevin," the coach said. "I think everybody else has been practicing and has been good to go, so we'll see as the week goes on about Brevin, but everybody else has been out there running around, looking good." This means offensive lineman John Campbell Jr., who started at left tackle Saturday against the Clemson Tigers, should be good to go after exiting the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent right knee injury. Jordan's potential absence would be painful for the Hurricanes. The star tight end leads Miami (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast) with 18 catches for 243 yards and three touchdown this season. He was the Hurricanes' leading receiver in their 42-17 loss to No. 1 Clemson before he exited with an apparent right shoulder injury in the third quarter. - Miami Herald

  10/16/20 - Deandre JohnsonrSr/2022, Miami, 6-3, 252 (DS#44 DE) + More +

Vols senior outside linebacker Deandre Johnson's targeting penalty and subsequent ejection during the first quarter of Saturday's 44-21 loss to Georgia was earned, according to Pruitt. "It was a bad decision on his part," Pruitt said. "He took two-and-a-half steps. The whole thing, really, about any defenseless player is that if you can avoid contact, it's your job to do that. I've always felt that there is inconsistency in the rule but that it's a good rule because it helps our game and protects our players. "It is a tough rule to kind of enforce, and there have been some inconsistencies in my opinion over the years, but I think Deandre should have avoided the quarterback. It's pretty simple." Johnson, who leads the Vols with 3.5 sacks this season, was ineligible for the second half of Saturday's game but is good to go this week. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

  10/15/20 - Amari CarterrSr/2022, Miami, 6-0, 200 (DS#23 SS) + More +

Safety and senior team captain Amari Carter has had multiple targeting penalties in his career, and it just keeps happening. Saturday he was flagged for targeting in the first quarter on what appeared to be a late hit that he was once again trying to stop at the last second. "Look, Amari has got a reputation,'' Diaz said. "Everybody knows he's a big hitter. If a quarterback is running toward Amari Carter, the quarterback is going to slide. Trevor Lawrence loves his career and he loves his health and he's not going to run over Amari Carter. It's going to be a bad deal for him. So Amari just needs to know and needs to anticipate that guy is going to slide.

"It's unfair, and we all know this, what it looks like in slow motion as to what it is in real life. That is happening so fast. You see Amari getting off a block and getting pushed in the back and then all of a sudden.. If Amari wanted to hit him, he would have hit 'em, and it would have been a bad down. And so he's trying to pull out of it but there's still contact, and by the letter of the law, that's a flag. And I've said this before: I wish we had a Flagrant I, Flagrant II type system, you know, Targeting I, Targeting II. "We've taken the intent, you know, of that real nasty hit across the middle of the field. We've taken that out of the game in a good way. Amari is not trying to do that. But it's not the officials on the field that call that. That goes upstairs, and by the rules that they've been given by whoever makes the rules they've got to [go] from that." - Miami Herald

  10/10/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Clemson is once again led by a player who has been described as a generational talent in Trevor Lawrence, while the Tigers defense will have to deal with a dual-threat star in Miami's D'Eriq King. King, who is passing for 245 yards per game and rushing for 52 yards per game, has generated some Heisman buzz with his outstanding play over the first three weeks of the season. King currently has the third-best Heisman odds at 6-1, behind only Lawrence and Florida's Kyle Trask. Swinney believes it's easy to see why King is receiving so much attention nationally. "It's always a challenge to stop gifted, athletic quarterbacks," Swinney said. "When (King) takes off he's a running back, and that's the mindset he has. You better have your big boy pads on. He wants to throw it first. He's a very good thrower. He can throw the ball on the run. He can push the ball down the field. There's really nothing he can't do."

While there are some similarities between King and Jackson, there are also some differences. For one, King has accounted for seven touchdowns through three games. Jackson had 51 in 13 games in 2016, for an average of nearly four per game. "(King's) fast, but he's not Lamar Jackson fast. Lamar Jackson was probably the fastest guy on the field, either team," Swinney said. "But (King's) a very dangerous player. But they're different in some regards. But the similarities are they've got good people around them. They're well-coached, good schemes. And they challenge you because they can beat you with their mind, they can beat you with their arms, they can beat you with their legs. That's a three-phase quarterback." - The State

  10/09/20 - Charleston RamborSr/2022, Miami, 6-1, 177 (DS#27 WR) + More +

OU receiver Charleston Rambo doesn't want to be selfish. But he needs the football in his hands more. He needs to get in the end zone more. "Just being humble and trying to carry a team, that's some stuff I need to do," Rambo said. As OU prepares to face No. 22-ranked Texas in Saturday' annual Red River Showdown, the Sooners' star receiver wants to do more. Last season, he got off to a fast start. He caught four touchdowns and totaled 215 yards through the first three games. This season, he's only scored twice and amassed 171 receiving yards. But Rambo also wants to lead and help young, talented players like quarterback Spencer Rattler.

"I know he's young," Rambo said. "I need to be there more for him, talk through things. And bring up our O-line, talk to our running backs. Just try to key in our offensive people, get everybody locked in. Rambo and offensive lineman Creed Humphrey have become the offense's vocal leaders. They're often the ones loudest in adversity. "We need to start keying things together and get these Ws," Rambo said. - Daily Oklahoman

The Miami Hurricanes didn't even have to play this past weekend to rise in the polls. Miami rose one spot to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 Poll and Amway Coaches Poll to make that top-10 matchup Saturday at the No. 1 Clemson Tigers (7:30 p.m., ABC) even juicier. This will be the highest ranked Hurricanes team (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) to face a No. 1 opponent since the Canes faced none other than Clemson (3-0, 2-0) on Dec. 2, 2017 in the ACC Championship Game. The Tigers squashed the then-No 7 Canes 38-3 in that game. Late Saturday, ESPN's popular College GameDay announced it will be on site for the UM-Clemson game. It is the second consecutive game for Miami at which College GameDay has set up shop. GameDay came to Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 26 for Miami's 52-10 victory over Florida State. This season, the Canes have victories over Alabama-Birmingham (3-1), then-No. 18 Louisville (1-2, 0-2) and FSU (1-2, 0-2). - Miami Herald

  10/02/20 - Cam McCormickrSr/2025, Miami, 6-5, 248 (DS#58 TE) + More +

Replacing Jake Breeland is easier than it should be only because he unfortunately missed the second half of last season, but his production capability was second to none at the position. Ryan Bay did yeoman's work and his loss will be more significant than some might believe. Hunter Kampmoyer returns, but how much the Ducks utilize the tight end in the receiving game hinges most on Cam McCormick's health and Spencer Webb. McCormick hasn't played in over two years but he has by far the greatest upside. It's been said before and it'll be said again, if he can stay healthy, he could be a massive weapon for Oregon's offense and a major contributor. His receiving prowess is most notable but McCormick is also the most well rounded of Oregon's tight ends, so he can stay on the field in uptempo situations and limit offensive personnel options. - The Oregonian

  10/02/20 - Deandre JohnsonrSr/2022, Miami, 6-3, 252 (DS#44 DE) + More +

Several minutes after Tennessee opened its 2020 football season with a 31-27 win at South Carolina last Saturday night, Volunteers coach Jeremy Pruitt praised the dedication of senior edge rusher Deandre Johnson. Pruitt said Johnson chose to move into a campus dorm this past summer, and the 6-foot-3, 255-pound senior from Miami explained this week the several reasons why. "Well, the biggest thing was I didn't have to pay rent, so that was a big lift off my shoulders," a smiling Johnson said on a Zoom call. "I was just able to focus on myself and just kind of dial in and settle down. I had a lot of things going on around me, so it just helped me settle down.

"I'm just more focused. Now that I'm back off (campus), I kind of used some of the things that I learned in the summer, and they're helping me now. I'm just even-keeled right now and focused on the things that I need to be focused on." Not exactly the first Tennessee defender who rolled off the tongue before the season, Johnson erupted inside Williams-Brice Stadium for a career-high six tackles, a career-best 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. The forced fumble was the fourth of his career, but his 2.5 sacks matched last year's total, which was a single-season best. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

  09/30/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Because of D'Eriq King's size (5-9), scouts want to see exceptional accuracy from UM's quarterback. Without that, he will remain a fringe NFL prospect, according to two scouts. And that's why it would be helpful if King improves his deep passing game. He made a terrific throw to Dee Wiggins for a touchdown Saturday, but for the season, he's just 5 for 20 on passes thrown at least 20 yards in the air, with two touchdowns. But here's the good news, which NFL people should not overlook: No quarterback in FBS has thrown as many passes (94) without an interception … Overall, King is 22nd in the country in passing efficiency...His 66.7 percent completion percentage (63 for 94) is 20th in the country and better than his 63.5 in his great year for Houston in 2018 and enormously better than his 52.7 in four games last season. - Miami Herald
