It's as if Marshall University's football program traded wide receiver Broc Thompson to Purdue University for a player to be named later. As it turns out, the latter player is former Purdue defensive tackle Steven Faucheux, according to multiple sources. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Faucheux spent two years in the Boilermakers' program as a defensive tackle wearing No. 93, but he never played. In fact, it has been nearly three years since the last time the native of West Chester, Ohio, appeared in a football game. That's because Faucheux was playing strong-side defensive end for Lakota West High School when he was injured early during his senior year and missed the rest of the season. So, Faucheux has been somewhat idle during the last three years. - Charleston Gazette

The Herd got another big boost at the defensive end position recently when former consensus four-star prospect Shane Simmons announced he was going to transfer from Penn State and finish his college career at Marshall. The 6-3, 247-pound Simmons will be a sixth-year senior. The Laurel, Maryland native's decision to join the Herd is all about previous connections. New Marshall head coach Charles Huff actually was coaching at Penn State during two of Simmons' seasons with the Nittany Lions. So it comes as no surprise that Simmons would choose to join the Herd. Although Simmons was rather injury-plagued early in his career, he still managed to finish with 44 appearances (two starts), 59 overall tackles (24 solo), 10.5 tackles for loss, including four sacks, and one pass breakup. Simmons is a quality addition to Marshall's football program. - Charleston Gazette

Marshall football head coach Charles Huff is all about pressure. Whether on offense or defense, Huff wants the Thundering Herd to be the aggressor. While the scheme comes with applying pressure, it also puts the Herd in some pressure situations, especially at the cornerback position. With Huff and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry dialing up pressure on a more consistent basis in 2021, those cornerbacks for the Herd are going to be in many one-on-one scenarios, which makes the fundamentals learned this spring crucial to success in the fall. "It puts a little bit more emphasis on technique and fundamentals," Huff said. "When you're pressuring, you're a little bit on an island and you're probably a little tighter than you normally have [been]." For Marshall, there is a veteran returnee in cornerback Steven Gilmore, who has shined in his first three seasons with the Herd. Last season, Gilmore finished with 39 tackles and 12 pass breakups with one interception and two forced fumbles. Gilmore has played in 36 career games and he's been in one-on-one scenarios plenty of times with the Herd, but never with this frequency. That means his play has to step up on a more consistent basis. - Charleston Gazette

Heading into the 2020 season, Marshall wide receiver Talik Keaton was poised to become a breakout talent for the Thundering Herd offense. Keaton was already known as Conference USA's premier return man and had taken on a greater role in the passing game, shining in spring and the preseason. As the season got underway, though, Keaton could never get under good footing - literally. A rash of nagging injuries left the talented sophomore from Sarasota, Florida, limited throughout the 2020 season. With the year of frustration over, Keaton has taken to preparation for 2021 with a renewed vigor, according to new head coach Charles Huff. Huff's uptempo scheme is going to benefit the playmakers on offense, and Keaton is certainly among those, as Huff pointed out earlier this week. "Talik is probably the most consistent in that group right now," Huff said. Huff talked about there being plenty of flash among Marshall's playmakers, but he was looking for "consistent light," which Keaton is bringing to the table with his efforts each day. - Charleston Gazette

National Signing Day might have passed last week, but that hasn't stopped Marshall football head coach Charles Huff from pressing forward. As Huff stated previously, there are no days off in recruiting - something he showed on Wednesday as a high-major talent committed to the Thundering Herd out of the transfer portal. Clemson's LeAnthony Williams, a 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back, announced in a message on social media that he would spend his last two seasons with at Marshall. Williams was one of the nation's most sought-after recruits out of high school in the Class of 2017, ranking No. 203 in overall prospects, according to 247Sports. - Charleston Gazette

Marshall's football program has lost another key player to the NFL Draft. On Sunday afternoon, junior defensive end Darius Hodge took to social media to announce his intentions to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Hodge's left a message to those close to him below a post that said, "I'm not coming home till I can build my own!!" The junior from Wake Forest, N.C., came to Marshall as a linebacker, but made the transition to defensive end and became one of Conference USA's top pass-rushers. It was expected that he would be a key returnee for the Herd in 2021, but on Sunday, that tune changed as he became Marshall's fourth player to declare for next year's draft. In 2020, Hodge finished third on Marshall’s team in tackles with 63 while leading the team in tackles for loss (9.0) and sacks (6.5). - Herald-Dispatch
