Marshall (7-4, 5-2) will face division leader Western Kentucky (7-4, 6-1) next Saturday with the winner earning a trip to the C-USA championship on Dec. 3. Ali's 4-yard score late in the third capped a string 28 unanswered points for a 42-14 lead. Sheldon Evans added 68 yards on the ground with two TDs for Marshall. Chris Reynolds was 19-of-34 passing for 176 yards and three scores for Charlotte (5-6, 3-4). Cameron Dollar caught two TD passes. - Marshall/AP College Football

Rasheen Ali ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns and Marshall shut out Florida International 38-0 on Saturday. The Thundering Herd ran for 246 yards and scored all five of their touchdowns on the ground and did not turn the ball over while the defense held the Panthers to just 288 yards of offense. Shane Ciucci kicked a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter to open the scoring and four different backs scored rushing touchdowns the rest of the way, including Sheldon Evans' 41-yard run to the end zone in the second quarter as Marshall ran for 246 yards. Grant Wells was 20 of 25 passing for 184 yards for Marshall (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA), which announced its intention to leave C-USA and join the Sun Belt before the game. Max Bortenschlager was 14 of 27 for 128 yards for Florida International (1-7, 0-4) and was intercepted once. D'Vonte Price ran for 51 of the Panthers' 108 rushing yards. - Marshall/AP College Football

Henry Colombi threw for a touchdown, ran for another as Texas Tech had four rushing touchdowns in a 41-14 win over Kansas on Saturday afternoon. Colombi was 14-for-20 passing for 124 yards and added 35 rushing yards while Jason Bean was 11-for-21 passing for 80 yards and one interception for Kansas. "I think it was important for us to come out here and execute today and we did it on both sides of the ball," Colombi said. "Every position played well today and I think we spread the ball around." Texas Tech (5-2, 2-2 Big 12 Conference) had three rushing touchdowns - by Colombi, Erik Ezukanma and Myles Price to lead 24-0 at halftime.

Donovan Smith added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter. "Proud of guys for coming on the road and playing a very disciplined football game," Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells said. "I think the key was starting fast and jumped out and played well on both sides." The past two seasons combined, this matchup had been decided by a total of six points. Texas Tech showed this year there's still a big difference between the programs. The Raiders held Kansas to 20 passing yards and only four first downs in the first half. Texas Tech had 438 yards with 244 of those coming on the ground. Sarodorick Thompson ran for 83 yards and Ezukanma had 76 receiving yards. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

The score was tied, Texas Tech was about to take over deep in its own territory with time running down in the fourth quarter, and quarterback Henry Colombi had one thing to say to running back SaRodorick Thompson. "I turned to SaRodorick and I said, "This is why I play college football," Colombi said. "It's for moments like these." Colombi drove the Red Raiders 70 yards to set up Jonathan Garibay's 32-yard field goal with 18 seconds left for a 23-20 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Garibay had three field goals in all and Thompson had two short touchdown runs for Texas Tech (4-1, 1-1 Big 12), which bounced back from a 70-35 loss at Texas. "We wanted to capitalize on our opportunities this week," Colombi said. "We had a great week of practice. And I'm real proud of the guys." Despite missing numerous starters, including key offensive playmakers, the Red Raiders beat the Mountaineers (2-3, 0-2) for the third straight time, all when using a backup quarterback.

Colombi staked Texas Tech to a 17-0 lead, then watched West Virginia come back. The Mountaineers were driving for a potential go-ahead score. On third-and-goal from the Texas Tech 6, Jarret Doege's pass toward an open Leddie Brown sailed out of the end zone, forcing a field goal with 4:34 left to tie the game at 20-20. "To kind of bend and then definitely not break, that was huge," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said. Colombi had plenty of time left. He threw 42 yards to Kaylon Geiger to put Texas Tech at the West Virginia 38. Thompson then ran 16 and 13 yards on the next two plays to put the Red Raiders in range for the winning field goal. West Virginia wasn't able to get past midfield on its final drive. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

SEPT 6 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marshall LB Eli Neal recorded 11 tackles and a game-high three sacks in the Thundering Herd's 49-7 romp at Navy on Saturday. He also had a hand in a big special teams play as he scooped up T.J. Johnson's blocked field goal and got three more yards on the return. The Memphis native entered Saturday with just 1.5 sacks in his first 23 games. Neal's effort led a Thundering Herd defense that finished with nine sacks, the second most in a single game in program history (Record: 12, vs. Ohio, 1986). - Conference USA Football

Freshman Rasheen Ali scored the first four touchdowns of his collegiate career as Marshall dominated Navy 49-7 in Charles Huff's debut as head coach on Saturday. Huff was introduced as the Thundering Herd's coach nearly a year ago. While Marshall won a ninth-straight season opener, Huff broke a specific type of losing streak: the previous five first-year coaches had all lost season-opening road games. Ali scored his first TD from the 2, capping the game-opening drive. He added two more scoring runs - from the 3 and the 4 - staking Marshall to a 21-0 halftime lead. Ali scored a final touchdown with a plunge from the 1 midway through the fourth quarter.

Sheldon Evans scored Marshall's other two touchdowns with runs of 9 and 1 yards. Xavier Arline scored early in the fourth, crashing over from the 1, as Navy avoided the shutout thanks to 337 yards rushing. Marshall's defense recorded 126 total tackles - including 13 for a loss - to 66 by Navy's defense. Marshall held a 464-398 edge in total yards, largely thanks to Grant Wells completing 20 of 30 passes for 333 yards before being replaced by backup Luke Zban late in the game. Zban fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Horton with 2:01 remaining. Four Midshipmen combined to complete 5 of 16 passes for 61 yards. - Marshall/AP College Football

Marshall offensive lineman Billy Ross confirmed on Tuesday night he has chosen to give up football for personal reasons. "I can assure you that I'm going to hang them up," Ross said. "There's no way that I would sit this year out and enter the portal again. I'm done playing football." Ross said seeing an end to his football career - a game he's played since he was a little boy - was bittersweet. "It comes to an end at some point," Ross said. "I played for so long. It's definitely tough in that aspect, but there's also a time that it hits and you know [you're done] and it makes it easier. It's not all that bad for me." The 2021 season was slated to be Ross' return to the field after nearly two years. Ross entered the transfer portal in fall 2020 while at North Carolina and committed to the Thundering Herd and former offensive line coach Greg Adkins soon after. Ross then came to Marshall this summer after finishing his degree at North Carolina in the spring. The 6-foot-6, 294-pound local product was expected to start at either guard or tackle for the Herd in the 2021 season opener Sept. 4 at Navy. - Charleston Gazette

The number 200 has long been a target number for Marshall running back Sheldon Evans. It would be understandable if that was a target for the amount of carries he wanted to get in 2021. Given the load former running back Brenden Knox endured over the past two seasons, it would've even been realistic. Instead, it was a target weight for Evans to reach coming into the 2021 season - a goal it appears he has attained.

Evans reconditioned his body and is now listed at 192 pounds on the Thundering Herd's official camp roster, down more than 25 pounds from when he came to campus in 2017. Marshall head coach Charles Huff used Evans as an example of a guy who has seen summer conditioning results and is eager to see how those translate on the field this fall. "I know Sheldon was in the office a couple days ago and he was so fired up that he came here and he was like 218," Huff said. "Now he's down to like 205 and he can see a six-pack. He's just excited about his opportunity." - Charleston Gazette

Marshall linebacker Abraham Beauplan knows he's stepping into a bigger role within the Thundering Herd defense in 2021. As Beauplan gets ready for the new season, he's more intent on applying pressure instead of feeling the pressure of his new role with the Herd. "We're blitzing a lot this year," Beauplan said. "That's something we didn't do last season, so as a linebacker, you've got to love that. You've got to love the pressure." Pressure is something the members of the defense may feel for the Herd. Last season, they were among the nation's best in several categories, including total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense.

With a new staff in place, the philosophies will change under new defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, but that doesn't mean Beauplan or the Marshall defense want their productivity to change, too. "It's been easy to adjust," Beauplan said. "It wasn't really too hard for us. It was just really easy, honestly." Under Guidry's guidance, Marshall's amped-up pressure gives Beauplan a chance to do what he does best - attack the football. Last season was Beauplan's first out of Navarro College, but he does not spare words when discussing his desire to play in the NFL. In 2020, Beauplan showed his abilities to not only get to the football but also force turnovers, finishing with three forced fumbles on the year, which led the team. "When you're watching guys in the league, one thing they focus on is getting the ball and making big plays," Beauplan said. "Just making the tackle, anybody can do that. If you are trying to get to the next level, you have to try to make a play on the ball. That's what I do every time I get to the ball." - Charleston Gazette

Johnson can help the Thundering Herd a lot. After all, he is the second-leading returning tackler behind only linebacker Eli Neal. In eight games in 2020, Johnson made 59 tackles (fourth on the team) along with two interceptions, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. It just took Johnson a while to wrap his mind around the fact that staying at Marshall was the best-case scenario for him. "I feel good about my decision now," he said. "I feel like I made the best decision for me and my future because I only can improve. I can't get worse. This off-season I feel like I've gotten bigger, faster and I'm actually understanding the game more. Last year, I believe, was just a glimpse of what my true potential really is. "I feel a lot more comfortable. Last year I was really comfortable, but this year...I've been here for five years and I've played for four years. Plenty of games. Plenty of ups and downs. "I think this is going to be one of my best seasons." - Charleston Gazette

Verdis Brown's first three seasons at Illinois have been spent on the offensive line. But the 6-foot-4, 330-pound Chicago native, who started eight games at right guard in 2020, found himself among defensive linemen on Monday. "Got great short-area quickness. Very powerful. I know out of high school they said he was kind of recruited both ways," Illini coach Bret Bielema said. "I just went to him about two weeks before summer camp was done. I said, 'This is kind of what I'm thinking. What do you think?' ... He quickly gravitated toward it. I thought (Monday) actually went pretty good. I know that the D-line room took him in with open arms, and I know (defensive line coach Terrance Jamison) was excited to get him." - News Gazette Tribune

Marshall cornerback Steven Gilmore has made a habit of locking down opposing receivers in his years in the Thundering Herd's defensive backfield. That effort helped him lock down a preseason accolade on Monday. Gilmore was announced as one of 40 individuals on the preseason watch list for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top college defensive back. Gilmore has seen significant action in all three seasons that he's been with the Herd. Last season, Gilmore started in all 10 games, earning All-Conference USA first-team honors at season's end following a year in which he had 39 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles. The brother of NFL standout Stephon Gilmore, Steven Gilmore also was one of Conference USA's top cover men with 12 pass breakups on the year. - Charleston Gazette

  07/26/21 - Eli NealrSr/2024, Marshall + More +

Marshall University linebacker Eli Neal has never been one to fear change. Coming from Memphis, Tennessee, to Huntington was a culture shock in itself when he made the decision to pursue a football career with the Thundering Herd, but Neal prides himself in rolling with the punches. With first-year coach Charles Huff now at the helm, Neal said the move has been taken in stride as the program's philosophies shift. "The transition hasn't been as hard as most people would probably think, changing head coaches," Neal said. "For the most part, we've been a player-led team for a while. We know where we want to go as a team. Coach Huff coming in with a new energy has helped us move even farther and just made the transition a whole lot smoother."

As Neal gets set for the 2021 season, his role will also be in transition as he takes on more of a focal point within the defense. Last season, linebacker Tavante Beckett was the unequivocal leader of the defense and one of the nation's top linebackers, finishing with 90 tackles in nine games, which led him to the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year award. With Beckett now gone, Neal steps into that leadership role as a player who has to be solid on every single down. - Charleston Gazette

Billy Ross has seen his college football career officially come full circle. As it stands, the first school to offer him out of Huntington High School will be the final place he plays in the college ranks. Ross, who completed his degree at North Carolina, has joined Marshall's program as a graduate transfer who can have immediate impact for the Thundering Herd's offensive line. For Ross, there was never any question of him playing for Marshall. It was just a matter of when. "Even when I was at North Carolina, I always rooted for Marshall to win their games," Ross said. "I knew when it came down to it, when I made my decision [to transfer], I'd end up back here." Just how serious was Ross about a return to Huntington to play for his hometown team? "There was no question," Ross said. "I didn't even talk to any other coaches when I hit the portal. It was only Marshall." During the 2020 season, Ross committed to Marshall, which was coached by Doc Holliday at the time. - Charleston Gazette
