Steven Gilmore returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and Khalan Labron ran for 163 yards as Marshall shocked No. 8 Notre Dame 26-21 on Saturday, making Marcus Freeman the first Fighting Irish coach to lose his first three games. Gilmore, the brother of Stephon Gilmore of the Indianapolis Colts, picked off a pass by Tyler Buchner with 4:35 left, raced to the end zone and then jumped into the stands where Marshall fans were already celebrating. Marshall (2-0), the first Sun Belt Conference team to play at Notre Dame Stadium, beat a team ranked in the top 10 for just the second time in school history. The Irish had a streak of 42 straight wins against unranked opponents snapped. Freeman, the 36-yeard-old first-time head coach who was promoted after Brian Kelly left for LSU, had lost a bowl game to Oklahoma State and also lost at Ohio State last week. - Marshall/AP College Football

Marshall cornerback Steven Gilmore has made a habit of locking down opposing receivers in his years in the Thundering Herd's defensive backfield. That effort helped him lock down a preseason accolade on Monday. Gilmore was announced as one of 40 individuals on the preseason watch list for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top college defensive back. Gilmore has seen significant action in all three seasons that he's been with the Herd. Last season, Gilmore started in all 10 games, earning All-Conference USA first-team honors at season's end following a year in which he had 39 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles. The brother of NFL standout Stephon Gilmore, Steven Gilmore also was one of Conference USA's top cover men with 12 pass breakups on the year. - Charleston Gazette

Marshall football head coach Charles Huff is all about pressure. Whether on offense or defense, Huff wants the Thundering Herd to be the aggressor. While the scheme comes with applying pressure, it also puts the Herd in some pressure situations, especially at the cornerback position. With Huff and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry dialing up pressure on a more consistent basis in 2021, those cornerbacks for the Herd are going to be in many one-on-one scenarios, which makes the fundamentals learned this spring crucial to success in the fall. "It puts a little bit more emphasis on technique and fundamentals," Huff said. "When you're pressuring, you're a little bit on an island and you're probably a little tighter than you normally have [been]." For Marshall, there is a veteran returnee in cornerback Steven Gilmore, who has shined in his first three seasons with the Herd. Last season, Gilmore finished with 39 tackles and 12 pass breakups with one interception and two forced fumbles. Gilmore has played in 36 career games and he's been in one-on-one scenarios plenty of times with the Herd, but never with this frequency. That means his play has to step up on a more consistent basis. - Charleston Gazette

2020 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB-Steven Gilmore, Jr., Marshall,...The Thundering Herd had a league-high nine on the C-USA first team, led by quarterback Grant Wells, running back Brenden Knox, offensive linemen Cain Madden and Josh Ball, tight end Xavier Gaines, defensive end Darius Hodge, linebacker Tavante Beckett, defensive back Steven Gilmore and punt returner Talik Keaton. Gilmore is tied for second in passes defended (10). - Marshall Football

Gilmore came on the scene as a freshman in spot duty, but last season made a leap as one of Marshall's most consistent defenders on the outside. In 2019, Gilmore finished with 50 tackles, which was sixth on the team, and led Marshall with two interceptions while adding four pass breakups and a forced fumble. That included a career-best performance when he notched 11 tackles in the win over Western Kentucky. He also had a game-clinching interception against Florida Atlantic in crunch time.

As 2020 approaches, Gilmore's snap numbers will increase and his production is expected to as well. The South Carolina native knows that being a lockdown corner is in his blood, with brother Stephon Gilmore being one of the NFL's best for the New England Patriots. However, Steven Gilmore wants to make his own name within the pass-happy ranks of Conference USA and he'll get that opportunity as one of the most veteran returning cornerbacks that the Herd features. - Charleston Gazette
