Plummer will start his second straight game at quarterback Saturday when the Scarlet Knights make their first visit to Ross-Ade Stadium. Plummer replaced the injured Aidan O'Connell during the week. O'Connell started the first three games. "Jack came in and did a very good job," Brohm said. "Where Aidan is at with everything, we'll see how this week goes but I do feel like Jack competed very hard, did a very good job. Showed a lot of poise and composure (and) for three and a half or three quarters, he played at a high level." Plummer completed 35 of 42 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Plummer and O'Connell have completed better than 80% of their passes in two different games this season. - Journal and Courier

Tyler Shough threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns and No. 11 Oregon held off short-handed UCLA 38-35 on Saturday to remain undefeated. At 3-0, Oregon solidified its spot atop the Pac-12 North. Devon Williams had six catches for 123 yards, including a 19-yarder for a score and a 49-yard reception that helped set up a third-quarter score. UCLA (1-2) had several players out because of COVID-19 protocols and contact tracing, including starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Redshirt freshman Chase Griffin started. Griffin threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions. Demetric Felton rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including an 11-yard scoring run that got the Bruins within three with 3:43 left. Oregon's ensuing drive failed and UCLA got the ball back with 1:24 left. A penalty on the Ducks got the Bruins a first down on the Oregon 39. But Oregon went on to stop the Bruins on fourth-and-12 to end it. - Oregon/AP College Football

Javian Hawkins leaves Louisville with records within reach and plenty of life in his legs. Which, come to think of it, is a good reason to go. U of L's prolific running back has picked a relatively sweet spot to opt out of his remaining eligibility to prepare for the NFL Draft. He has established his credentials as a breakaway threat without incurring any status-threatening injuries, showing the scouts what they need to see while avoiding risks that could prove ruinous to his professional prospects. Much as his decision will disappoint Cardinals fans and could compromise U of L's chances in its three remaining games, Hawkins probably ought to cash in while he can. Because of the bumps ballcarriers accumulate (and the diminished speed that often results), the career of the average NFL running back lasts about 2 ½ seasons. Unlike players at some other positions, and much like new cars, they are viewed as depreciating, fungible assets.

"Everybody always talks about the shelf life of running backs; how many hits can they take?" U of L coach Scott Satterfield said Monday. "Maybe that goes through running backs' minds, the fact that you only have so many hits...I think that's probably part of the decision for (Hawkins)." Though Clemson's Travis Etienne is the only running back commonly projected as a first-round selection in 2021, no fewer than seven lower-rated backs have chosen to opt out this fall. Some of them may choose to return to campus for the 2021 season. Some of them won't get a sniff from the NFL. All of them are conscious, though, of the accumulated pounding their position entails and, presumably, mindful of the value of self-preservation. Hawkins is one who deserves a closer look. Small by NFL standards - U of L lists him at 5-foot-9, 196 pounds - he projects as a change-of-pace back with elite elusiveness at the next level. Despite missing Saturday's game at Virginia, Hawkins' 822 rushing yards rank seventh in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a healthy 6.2 yards per carry average. - Courier Journal

Atwell was the other big name left off the field in Saturday's loss to Virginia. The standout slot receiver has an injury that Satterfield would not disclose and is listed as questionable for Friday's game against Syracuse. The Miami native has tallied 528 receiving yards and five touchdowns this season and Satterfield said it will be close to see if he can play on Friday. "No specifics. Should know more this week I think he'll be really close to be able to come back. The negative is that it's a short week," Satterfield said. Satterfield stopped all rumors of Atwell wanting to opt out, like Hawkins. Satterfield said he and Atwell have not had a discussion about opting out this season. - Courier Journal

Malik Cunningham accounted for two touchdowns to offset three first-half turnovers, and Louisville held Syracuse to a season-low 137 yards with three takeaways for a 30-0 victory on Friday night. All of the turnovers occurred before the break, though Cunningham's two interceptions around a fumble in Syracuse territory weren't as costly. That's because the Cardinals' replenished defense created just as many opportunities, two of which the offense converted into 10 points for a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. Cunningham added a 4-yard TD run with 29 seconds remaining in the half before connecting with Tutu Atwell for a 19-yard score midway through the third. The junior quarterback finished 19-of-28 passing for 219 yards as the Cardinals (3-6, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended a two-game losing streak. Jalen Mitchell rushed 11 times for 46 yards with a 2-yard TD while Maurice Burkley had 56 yards on 10 carries. Syracuse (1-8, 1-7) never got going in losing its sixth consecutive game. Freshman JaCobian Morgan completed 5-of-12 passes for 40 yards in his second start and the ground game managed just 92 yards. - AP College Football

Running back Travis Dye of No. 11 Oregon recalled the bitter feeling after the Ducks lost at Washington State in 2018, and he didn't plan to experience it again Saturday night. Dye caught a pair of second-half touchdown passes and Oregon came back to beat Washington State 43-29. "I remember every little detail of 2018," Dye said. "It stuck in my mind ever since we left that field." He called Saturday's win "a thirst quencher." Tyler Shough threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns for Oregon. The Ducks improved to 2-0, piling up 582 yards of total offense.

Freshman Jayden de Laura threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns for Washington State (1-1), which led at halftime but could not stop the Ducks in the second half. Freshman defensive back Ayden Hector recovered three Oregon turnovers in the first half. "We're looking like a real great offense right now," Dye said. "We are moving and grooving way better than we have in the past." Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said the touchdown Oregon scored in the closing seconds of the second quarter was key. It cut Washington State's halftime lead from 12 to five points. "Certainly a huge momentum swing," he said. "Guys went into the locker room with a lot of juice, a lot of energy." Shough played well, especially in the second half, Cristobal said. "He made some great plays and some great decisions. Great job with protections, used this feet to get out of stuff," Cristobal said. "Just showing tremendous maturity in just a second start, so big days ahead for Tyler." - AP College Football

Shai Werts ran for three touchdowns and passed for another, Alex Raynor kicked four field goals and Georgia Southern held off Texas State 40-38 in a shootout on Saturday. The Eagles (6-2, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) racked up 386 yards rushing as Werts (21 carries for 120) and Logan Wright (14-103) each topped 100 yards. Texas State (1-9, 1-5), despite being outgained 437-299 in total yards, put together back-to-back TDs to scrap into a 21-20 lead before halftime, then twice came within two points after halftime before falling.

The Bobcats' Tyler Vitt passed for 114 yards and a TD and Brady McBride passed for 155 more with two scores, including a late touchdown to Jah'marae Sheread that made it 40-38 with 2:50 left in the game. Georgia Southern ran out the clock by twice converting on third down. Matt LaRoche tore off a 27-yard run on a third-and-4 deep in his own territory. Werts pounded out five yards to convert a final first down to wind down the final seconds. - AP College Football

Quarterback Tyler Shough was handed the keys to Joe Moorhead's new offensive system on Saturday after playing behind Justin Herbert for two seasons. After a slow start, the redshirt sophomore settled in and made several big plays. Shough completed 17-of-26 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 85 yards with a 9-yard scoring run on 11 carries, which no doubt thrilled the fan base watching from home. A common criticism of the Oregon offense the last two seasons under former offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo was his failure to utilize Herbert as a runner. Shough's start was far from perfect, with an interception early in the second quarter. But he also completed long passes to Mycah Pittman (44 yards) and Johnny Johnson III (38 yards) and threaded a pass between three defenders to Jaylon Redd for a nice gain. - Register Guard

Tyler Shough picked up where Justin Herbert left off, throwing for 227 yards and a touchdown and running for another score to lead No. 12 Oregon to a 35-14 victory over short-handed Stanford on Saturday night in the opener for both teams. Stanford was hurt before game even kicked off when it was announced that starting quarterback Davis Mills was unavailable. Receiver Connor Wedington and defensive end Trey LaBounty were also listed as unavailable because of COVID-19 testing results and contact tracing protocols. Stanford did not specify whether the players had tested positive, but Wedington said on Twitter that he tested negative.

Shough completed 17 of 26 passes with one interception, and ran for 85 yards, as he assumed the starter's role now that Herbert has moved on to the NFL. With Herbert at quarterback, Oregon went 12-2 last season and won the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin. CJ Verdell ran for 105 yards and a score for Oregon, which won its 11th straight game at Autzen Stadium, the seventh longest active streak in the nation. Mills started in six games for the Cardinal last season, throwing for 1,960 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was replaced by backup Jack West, who made his first start. Stanford also used freshman Tanner McKee. - AP College Football

Joey Gatewood is on the verge of getting his first chance at being a starting quarterback. The former Auburn QB is likely to get the start for Kentucky when the team faces Georgia on Saturday, according to sources. Terry Wilson, the Wildcats' starting quarterback in the team's first five games, is dealing with a throwing hand injury, hasn't taken part in Kentucky's first two practices of the week and it appears unlikely he'll play against Georgia, per sources. Gatewood, who left Auburn last October before later transferring to Kentucky, has appeared in three games thus far for the Wildcats as a backup quarterback. That includes some reps last week with Wilson struggling during Kentucky's loss to Missouri. The former top-50 recruit threw three passes and had a 12-yard completion. He also had three carries for six yards. - Birmingham News

UM coaches appreciated that striker Gilbert Frierson offered to play safety against Virginia after Amari Carter was ejected for targeting early in the game. UM took him up on the offer. "Gilbert, man he's just a student of the game," Baker said. "He sits at meeting and is obviously playing attention to everything. How prepared were we as a staff to put him there? He's played absolutely zero snaps at safety for us. He came up to us at halftime and said `Coach, I can do it.' He's smart, knows everybody on the defense, what their job is supposed to be. It's impressive." - Miami Herald

Javian Hawkins earned the nickname "PlayStation" when he played Pop Warner football as a kid in Brevard County. On Saturday, he hit the "o" button and gave the Louisville Cardinals a huge advantage in a 48-16 win over the Florida State Seminoles. Hawkins, who starred at Astronaut High and Cocoa High, scored two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter for Louisville as the Cardinals jumped out to a big lead. First, the sophomore tailback scored on a 9-yard run, helping U of L tie the game at 7. But it was his second run that gave the Cardinals huge momentum, and made the game's highlight reel. Starting right, Hawkins was bottled up, but he spun back and headed left, and his speed carried him the rest of the way for a 70-yard touchdown. Hawkins added a third touchdown in the third quarter - a 10-yard scoring run. Hawkins left the 100-yard mark behind in the second quarter. He now has 11 100-yard games in his young Louisville career, good enough for fourth in school history. He finished with 176 yards on 16 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per carry. - Courier Journal
