  12/26/20 - Trey RagasrSr/2021, Louisiana, 5-10, 218 (DS#23 RB) + More +

Trey Ragas scored on a 1-yard plunge with 7:16 left and No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette beat UTSA 31-24 in the First Responder Bowl on Saturday at SMU's Ford Stadium. The Ragin' Cajuns (10-1) drove 72 yards in 12 plays for the winning score after UTSA (7-5) overcame a 24-7 second-half deficit to tie it. UTSA associate head coach/offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. directed the Roadrunners after first-year coach Jeff Traylor twice tested positive for COVID-19 this week and didn't accompany the team. Lunney said the Roadrunners were missing 15-20 total team members, including other assistant coaches and players. - AP College Football

  12/10/20 - Trey RagasrSr/2021, Louisiana, 5-10, 218 (DS#23 RB) + More +

UL running back Trey Ragas was picked Monday to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl. But he can't go. The prestigious postgame game for senior NFL prospects that had been scheduled for Jan. 23 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bowl, first played in 1925, is announcing all-star selections throughout December to recognize outstanding seniors anyway.

A fifth-year senior, Ragas has an option to return to UL in 2021 because all FBS players have been granted an extra season. But the East-West Shrine selection also affords him an opportunity to participate in virtual training sessions in preparation for the 2021 NFL Draft. Ragas has 660 yards and nine touchdowns on 117 carries this season. He scored three touchdowns in No. 17 UL's 24-21 win Friday night at Appalachian State, including two rushing and one on a throw from quarterback Levi Lewis. Ragas also was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association state Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. - Daily Advertiser

  12/06/20 - Paul BoudreauxrJr/2023, Louisiana, 5-10, 183 (DS#999 LS) + More +

Friday's game against Appalachian State did not start well for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns long snapper Paul Boudreaux, and his struggles continued throughout the game. It didn't ultimately prevent Louisiana from winning as the Ragin' Cajuns defeated Appalachian State 24-21. At the end of the first UL possession, he sent a snap over the head of UL punter Rhys Byrns with 10:24 left in the first quarter. Boudreaux sent a second snap over Byrns on the second Ragin' Cajuns possession. The second one went for a 38-yard loss to the Louisiana 22-yard line with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

Another bad snap occurred on the extra point after UL scored a touchdown with 6:25 left in the second quarter, and Louisiana didn't get the kick off. Then with 6:36 left in the fourth quarter, Boudreaux sent a third snap over the head of Byrns. It led to a safety when Byrns was forced to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone to prevent an Appalachian State touchdown. The safety cut the Louisiana lead to 24-19. Twitter roasted Boudreaux for his early struggles. - Daily Advertiser

  12/05/20 - Trey RagasrSr/2021, Louisiana, 5-10, 218 (DS#23 RB) + More +

No. 20 Louisiana-Lafayette overcame three snaps over the punter's head and another bad one on a extra point, beating Appalachian State 24-21 on a cold, rainy Friday night when the Mountaineers' Chandler Staton missed a 30-yard field goal with 2 seconds left. Running back Trey Ragas scored three touchdowns, and Levi Lewis threw for 101 yards and a touchdown and ran for 77 yards to help the Ragin’ Cajuns (9-1, 7-1 Sun Belt) beat Appalachian State (7-3, 5-2) for the first time and win their sixth straight game.

Louisiana-Lafayette was 0-8 against Appalachian State, including losses in the last two conference championship games. Long snapper Paul Boudreaux put Louisiana-Lafayette in a bind early, twice snapping more than 10 yards over the head of the punter in the first half and then sending a high snap to the holder on a failed extra point resulting in a 10-9 halftime deficit. Still, the Ragin' Cajuns appeared in control after Ragas' touchdown runs of 17 and 1 yards in the third quarter made it 24-10. - AP College Football

  11/28/20 - Levi LewisrSr/2022, Louisiana, 5-09, 187 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Levi Lewis passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more in less than three quarters, and No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette routed winless Louisiana-Monroe 70-20 on Saturday. Running backs Trey Regas and Elijah Mitchell each rushed for more than 90 yards and scored one touchdown apiece for Louisiana-Lafayette (8-1, 6-1 Sun Belt). Bralen Trahan returned an interception 53 yards for a score during a second quarter in which ULL scored four straight touchdowns to blow the game open. The Ragin' Cajuns have won five straight since their lone loss to 16th-ranked and unbeaten Coastal Carolina, which is scheduled to host ULL in the Sun Belt title game on Dec. 19. Jeremy Hunt had one touchdown passing and one rushing for Louisiana-Monroe (0-9, 0-6), which was playing for the first time in three weeks because of a COVID-19 outbreak that led to the cancellation of a game against Louisiana Tech last weekend after ULM had the previous weekend off.

The Ragin' Cajuns also had an outbreak that led to the cancellation of their Nov. 14 game against Central Arkansas. Cajuns coach Billy Napier was among those who contracted COVID-19 and traveled to Monroe separately from his team on Saturday after isolating and not attending any practices during the past week. ULL took the lead for good on Regas' 11-yard scoring run less than four minutes into the game. Lewis' 11-yard touchdown run made it 14-0 before ULM responded with Hunt's 1-yard TD pass to Camero Darling. - AP College Football

  11/07/20 - Elijah MitchellSr/2021, Louisiana, 5-10, 201 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Elijah Mitchell's 2-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 27-20 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday. Mitchell set up his winning TD on the previous play with a 21-yard run. The six-play, 61-yard drive took just over a minute and came after Arkansas State's Layne Hatcher found Brandon Bowling up the middle for a 47-yard score. A conversion pass tied the game with 2:24 on the clock. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, ULL's Levi Lewis avoided a rush and sprinted up the middle for a 33-yard score. The Ragin' Cajuns added another third-quarter touchdown when Lewis tossed the ball to Dontae Fleming who went around left end for a 52-yard TD. Early in the fourth quarter, Arkansas State's Jamal Jones ran for a short TD but a conversion pass failed and the Wolves trailed by two. Kenneth Almendares then extended ULL's lead with two field goals Lewis threw for 244 yards for ULL (6-1, 4-1 Sun Belt), which has won three in a row. Lincoln Pare had 121 yards rushing for Arkansas State (3-5, 1-4), which has lost three straight. - AP College Football

  11/04/20 - Eric GarrorrSr/2023, Louisiana, 5-08, 174 (DS#64 CB) + More +

After making two interceptions in UL's 44-34 win at Texas State on Saturday, it wasn't surprising to hear cornerback Eric Garror's response. "We just came out and had a ball," Garror said. In a literal sense, the Cajuns (5-1, 3-1 Sun Belt) sure did. But it wasn't necessarily fun. UL was flagged three times for defensive for defensive interference, and twice Garror was on the receiving end of those flags. There was no postgame celebration, Garror said, because the Cajuns "know we didn't play to our best ability." "We can't control that, because we're not referees," the junior from Mobile said with reference to the penalties. "It was very frustrating. But we just had to come back the next and play."

The tight calls kept UL from playing its preferred aggressive pass defense, something it suspected might happen. "We play tight man coverage like that every week," said UL coach Billy Napier, whose Cajuns were tagged with six pass interference penalties or personal fouls in the first half alone. "I think this (officiating) crew that we had, you know, they've called more DPIs and holdings than any other crew in the Sun Belt. "We knew that coming in. We talked to the players about it. But it's a product of how we play," Napier added. "We've got to make better decisions. We've got to use the correct technique. We've got to play with more poise and more discipline." - Daily Advertiser

Ragas ran for 131 yards and had scoring runs of 3, 2 and 7 yards. Lewis was 22-of-32 passing for 332 yards, and each of his scores were in the first half: a 46-yard touchdown pass to Calif Gossett, a 12-yard TD run, and a 1-yard scoring toss to Kyren Lacy that gave Louisiana-Lafayette (5-1, 3-1 Sun Belt Conference) a 34-21 halftime lead. Brady McBride was 14-of-32 passing for 166 yards for Texas State (1-7, 1-3). He threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Marcell Barbee but also three interceptions in the first half.   OCT 26 SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Smith, Louisiana,...Seized the momentum for Louisiana in its 24-20 victory over UAB with a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown at the end of the first half. The return was his second kickoff return for a touchdown this year. Smith, Raymond Calais and Darryl Surgent are the only three Ragin' Cajuns to have two or more kickoff returns for a touchdown in their careers in the last 10 years. The return was the longest kickoff return for a touchdown by a Cajun since Raymond Calais did so against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 2, 2017. (100 yards). Smith and Baylor's Trestan Ebner are currently tied for the most kickoff returns for a touchdown (2) in the country. The return was just the seventh kickoff return for a touchdown by a Ragin' Cajun in the last decade. He finished the game with 160 yards on four kick returns. - Sun Belt Football

  10/01/20 - Zach RobertsonrSr/2022, Louisiana, 6-5, 297 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Back in early June, shortly after announcing plans to join the Ragin' Cajuns as a graduate transfer, former Arizona State offensive lineman Zach Robertson addressed why he left the Power 5 program and sat out what would have been his 2019 redshirt senior season. Details were scarce, but Robertson - who started multiple games for the Pac-12's Sun Devils, including nine in 2018 - was candid. "I was just battling a lot of things that were going on...and it took a huge toll on my mental health," he told The Daily Advertiser then. "I didn't know how to cope with it so I decided to step away from football for a year and get my mind back right."

Last week, Robertson - now the 3-0 Cajuns' starting left tackle - revealed much more and, in the process, made a plea for college football players facing circumstances similar to his own to keep mental health atop their priority list. "I went through a real lot of issues in … 2019," Robertson said. "I went through depression, anxiety. "Both of those things, you know, I mean...the way I was raised, it wasn't an emphasis to make sure those things are OK, your mental health is OK. "So, it got to the point where it overwhelmed me and I made wrong decisions and I faced the consequences," he added. "I had to sit out. I basically didn't know if I was ever going to play football again. And those two things scared the hell out of me." - Daily Advertiser
