SEPT 28 SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nate Snyder, Louisiana,...The hero in No. 19 Louisiana's win over Georgia Southern, drilling a 53-yard field goal as time expired. The 53-yard make was the longest of his career. Snyder's made kick is just the seventh of 53-yards or more in program history and tied for the fourth-longest field goal in school history. It was the longest kick by a Ragin' Cajun since Stevie Artigue drilled a 53-yarder during the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championship Game at Appalachian State on Dec. 7, 2019. - Sun Belt Football

Nate Snyder hit a 53-yard field goal on the game's final play Saturday, and No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette escaped with a 20-18 victory over Georgia Southern. The Ragin' Cajuns (3-0, 2-0 Sun Belt) looked on the way to their first loss when Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts hit Khaleb Hood with a 28-yard touchdown pass and Dalton Anderson with a 2-point conversion with 54 seconds left to give the Eagles (1-1, 0-1) an 18-17 lead. ULL quarterback Levi Lewis, who threw for 290 yards, completed three passes for 47 yards in the final drive, including an 18-yarder to running back Trey Ragas to the Eagle 36.

From there, Snyder - who was 2-for-6 on the season including three misses inside 35 yards - split the uprights to give the Cajuns their first 3-0 start since 1988. Lewis had connected with Errol Rogers on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 10:34 left to give ULL a 17-10 lead after Snyder's 25-yard field goal late in the third period tied the game. Werts threw for a career-high 255 yards, completing his final seven passes , and led a 61-yard drive in the final two minutes that he ended with his scoring pass to Hood. After a time out, Werts evaded one tackler before hitting Anderson for the two-point conversion. - AP College Football

  09/19/20 - Elijah MitchellSr/2021, Louisiana, 5-10, 201 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Elijah Mitchell rushed for 164 yards, including the winning touchdown in overtime, and No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette beat Georgia State 34-31 on Saturday. The Ragin' Cajuns (2-0, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) were ranked for the first time since 1943 following last week's 20-point win at Iowa State. Louisiana-Lafayette was a 17-point favorite, but trailed 14-7 at intermission and Levi Lewis then threw an interception on the opening drive of the second half. The Panthers (0-1, 0-1) answered by taking a 21-7 lead on Marcus Carroll's 2-yard run, but the lead didn't last long.

Lewis, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 279 yards, rolled left to complete a 4-yard pass for a touchdown that cut the lead to 21-14 midway through the third quarter, and then Mitchell got going. The senior running back burst free down the left side for two long gains; a 59-yard touchdown run that tied it at 21 late in the third, and a 53-yard run early in the fourth that set up Trey Ragas' 2-yard touchdown run. Georgia State tied it at 28-all on Coates' 4-yard run with 7:37 remaining. In overtime, Mitchell ran 12 yards around the right side and was untouched as he crossed the goal line for the final score. He finished with 16 carries. - AP College/Louisiana-Lafayette Football

  09/16/20 - Ferrod GardnerrSr/2022, Louisiana, 6-0, 216 (DS#57 OLB) + More +

When Ferrod Gardner got official word he had been approved for a sixth season of eligibility, allowing him to play one more year for the Ragin' Cajuns, he had no doubt. Gardner was in, all the way. "I just felt like it was another opportunity for me to go ahead and better my game and better myself as a person," he said this week, "so I just definitely wanted to do it." Wow are the Cajuns ever glad he did. Gardner, UL's starting Will linebacker, had nine tackles including a sack in last Saturday's upset 31-14 win at then-No. 25 Iowa State, a victory that vaulted the Cajuns into the national rankings themselves, appearing at No. 21 in the Amway Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the AP Top 25.

The showing resulted in Louisiana Sports Writers Association state, Sun Belt Conference league and - get this - Walter Camp Football Foundation national Defensive Player of the Week honors for the 6-foot-2, 220-pounder from Trotwood-Madison High in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Cajuns coach Billy Napier, for one, wasn't surprised by what he and an ESPN national audience saw. "Ferrod's always been a guy we felt like could be an exceptional player," said Napier, whose 1-0 Cajuns visit Georgia State for their ESPN2-televised Sun Belt opener Saturday morning in Atlanta. - Daily Advertiser

SEPT 14 SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Smith, Louisiana,...Played a key role in Louisiana earning its first-ever win over a top-25 opponent on the road, using a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to put Louisiana on the board against No. 23 Iowa State. The return was his first career kickoff return for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by a Ragin' Cajun since Raymond Calais did so against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 2, 2017. The score was just the eighth kickoff return for a touchdown in the last 20 years. It was also just the third Louisiana kickoff return for a touchdown against a Big 12 opponent in the last 20 years, the most recent coming from Darryl Surgent against Kansas State in 2013. Smith finished the game with 137 return yards on three attempts and also added 25 rushing yards on eight carriers. - Sun Belt Football

Perseverance, confidence and two long kick returns propelled Louisiana-Lafayette to one of its biggest wins in program history, 31-14 win over No. 23 Iowa State. The Ragin' Cajuns beat a Top 25 opponent on the road for the first time, having gone 0-26 against ranked foes away from home. Their only other win over a Top 25 team was in 1996 at home against Texas A&M. Both offenses seemed overmatched at times, but the Ragin' Cajuns were ignited by Chris Smith's 95-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and Eric Garror's 83-yard punt return in the fourth. Levi Lewis added a 78-yard touchdown pass to Peter LeBlanc, giving Louisiana-Lafayette a 17-14 lead late in the third quarter. Lewis passed for 154 yards and contributed to a business-like approach by the Ragin' Cajuns, who didn't celebrate much on the field after the game. - AP College Football

Louisiana-Lafayette and Appalachian State were among 10 new teams ranked Sunday in first regular-season Associated Press college football poll, which was stripped of the teams not yet scheduled to play a fall season. There was no change at the very top: Preseason No. 1 Clemson received 60 of 61 first place-votes this week. After all Division I teams were eligible to be voted on for the preseason Top 25, the panel of 61 voters was permitted to consider only teams playing in the fall now that the season has started.

That meant preseason No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State and No. 9 Oregon, along with six other Big Ten and Pac-12 teams, dropped out of the rankings. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American Conference and Mountain West have delayed their seasons, but the Big Ten is taking some steps toward a possible mid-October start. With those teams gone, Alabama moved up to No. 2. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. Defending champion LSU, with one first-place vote, is No. 6. Among the new teams in the rankings were Sun Belt powerhouses Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 19 and Appalachian State at No. 24. - AP College Football

On a day when both offenses seemed overmatched, the Ragin' Cajuns were ignited by Chris Smith's 95-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and Eric Garror's 83-yard punt return in the third. The Ragin' Cajuns' only other win over a Top 25 team was in 1996 at home against Texas A&M. The Ragin' Cajuns limited Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy to 16-of-35 passing for 145 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception. It was ISU's fewest passing yards in two years.   09/07/20 - Levi LewisrSr/2022, Louisiana, 5-09, 187 (DS#21 QB) + More +

With a presence that inspires others to constantly be at their best, Levi Lewis does what any good leader should. UL's senior starting quarterback gets those around him to follow. But what separates Lewis from others? It may be the buy-in from those under his command. "Levi is the most-confident (person) I know on the team," Ragin' Cajuns running back Trey Ragas said. "The most hard-working person I know on the team. "So, with him, I know he's going to take this year very serious and he's going to give us his all." Which motivates his Cajun teammates to do the same as they prepare to open their 2020 season Saturday morning at No. 25 Iowa State. Yet for the product of Baton Rouge's Scotlandville Magnet High, there wasn't always a two-way sense of certainty.

"The first year," said Rob Sale, who came in as UL's offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the same time Billy Napier took over as head coach of the Cajuns prior to the 2018 season, "it kind of felt like (a) he-was-looking-at-us and we-were-looking-at him type deal." Lewis merely threw for 3,050 yards with a 64.3 completion percentage (243-for-378) and 26 touchdowns last season, when UL went 11-3, made it to its second straight Sun Belt Conference championship game and beat Miami (Ohio) of the MAC at the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile. The 3,050 yards and 26 TD throws both were school records, and now Lewis is on national preseason watch lists for major awards including the Davey O'Brien, the Maxwell, the Manning and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm. - Daily Advertiser
