  09/12/20 - Eric GarrorrSr/2023, Louisiana, 5-08, 174 (DS#64 CB) + More +

Louisiana-Lafayette got kick and punt returns for touchdowns to help secure one of its biggest wins in program history, 31-14 win over No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday. On a day when both offenses seemed overmatched, the Ragin' Cajuns were ignited by Chris Smith's 95-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and Eric Garror's 83-yard punt return in the third. Levi Lewis also threw a 78-yard scoring pass to Peter LeBlanc to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 17-14 lead late in the third quarter. Louisiana-Lafayette beat a Top 25 opponent for the first time, having gone 0-26 against ranked foes away from home. The Ragin' Cajuns' only other win over a Top 25 team was in 1996 at home against Texas A&M. The Ragin' Cajuns limited Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy to 16-of-35 passing for 145 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception. It was ISU's fewest passing yards in two years. Iowa State's Breece Hall rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. - AP College/Louisiana-Lafayette Football

  09/07/20 - Levi LewisrSr/2022, Louisiana, 5-09, 187 (DS#21 QB) + More +

With a presence that inspires others to constantly be at their best, Levi Lewis does what any good leader should. UL's senior starting quarterback gets those around him to follow. But what separates Lewis from others? It may be the buy-in from those under his command. "Levi is the most-confident (person) I know on the team," Ragin' Cajuns running back Trey Ragas said. "The most hard-working person I know on the team. "So, with him, I know he's going to take this year very serious and he's going to give us his all." Which motivates his Cajun teammates to do the same as they prepare to open their 2020 season Saturday morning at No. 25 Iowa State. Yet for the product of Baton Rouge's Scotlandville Magnet High, there wasn't always a two-way sense of certainty.

"The first year," said Rob Sale, who came in as UL's offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the same time Billy Napier took over as head coach of the Cajuns prior to the 2018 season, "it kind of felt like (a) he-was-looking-at-us and we-were-looking-at him type deal." Lewis merely threw for 3,050 yards with a 64.3 completion percentage (243-for-378) and 26 touchdowns last season, when UL went 11-3, made it to its second straight Sun Belt Conference championship game and beat Miami (Ohio) of the MAC at the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile. The 3,050 yards and 26 TD throws both were school records, and now Lewis is on national preseason watch lists for major awards including the Davey O'Brien, the Maxwell, the Manning and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm. - Daily Advertiser

The proof is rooted is in the same backfield they've shared for a few seasons now. Ragin' Cajun running backs can get their shot at the NFL if they play things right, and Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas - slated to get going when UL opens its 2020 season Sept. 12 at No. 25 Iowa State - need look no further than the very room from which they work to be reminded of that. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected their teammate, running back Raymond Calais Jr., out of UL in the seventh round of this year's NFL Draft. And in 2017, after Mitchell had finished his 2016 senior season at Erath High and Ragas was coming off a season in which he redshirted as a freshman at UL, the Jets drafted Elijah McGuire, who played two seasons with New York and spent last year on the practice squad of the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs.

"Me and Eli, we talk about it all the time," Ragas, an Archbishop Shaw High product from New Orleans, said when asked about the inspiration he and Mitchell get from Calais. "That's somebody in our own room who got drafted. "Eli McGuire, he got drafted. It's showing us it's real - like we've got the power to reach the next level. And it's in our hands." In their heads, too. Because make no mistake: Ragas is not shy to admit that getting an NFL shot of their own is constantly on his and Mitchell's minds. "Just about every day we talk about it," he said. - Daily Advertiser
