  08/25/20 - Cassius AllenrJr/2023, Louisiana, 6-3, 211 (DS#999 WR) + More +

A position group already hit hard took another blow when UL held its first scrimmage of the month Saturday. But fortunately for the Ragin' Cajuns it's a room that evidently has plenty of good depth, including a trio of freshmen - Kyren Lacy, Dontae Fleming and Errol Jr. - making quite an impression in advance of UL's scheduled Sept. 12 opener at No. 25 Iowa State. Receiver Cassius Allen "looks like he has a pretty significant knee injury," Cajuns coach Billy Napier said a Zoom conference Monday - the first the he's spoken with media members since the scrimmage. "He had a good day going (Saturday)," Napier said. "He had a couple nice plays early in the scrimmage before he got injured. "He also was a critical factor on special teams. I think he was a starter on two different units there. So that will be a significant loss here, and certainly those other guys are going to need to rise to the occasion." - Daily Advertiser

  08/18/20 - Ferrod GardnerrSr/2022, Louisiana, 6-0, 216 (DS#57 OLB) + More +

UL senior linebacker Ferrod Gardner, still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, should soon resume full contact, Ragin' Cajuns coach Billy Napier said when addressing media members during a Tuesday teleconference. Napier said Gardner has been engaging in some contact drills but is "not 100 percent cleared for contact yet." The Cajuns "anticipate him getting cleared for...full-go contact here soon," the Cajuns coach added. Napier did not mention Gardner as being among the injured when camp opened earlier this month and had not disclosed that he was not fully participating until he was asked Tuesday.

Granted a sixth season of eligibility for 2020, Gardner - a Missouri walk-on redshirt in 2015 who is projected to again start at the Will inside linebacker position for UL - opened 12 of the 13 games he played last year and finished with 47 total tackles. He also had 50 tackles over 13 games for the Cajuns in 2018, and got the sixth season granted after spending 2016 at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas but not getting onto the field at all - partly because of a foot injury - in 2017. - Daily Advertiser

Two Ragin' Cajuns receivers and a key defensive lineman are out for most or all of the 2020 season and will be redshirted this year, UL coach Billy Napier said the day before his team opened its 10-day preseason camp Friday. Napier said receiver Jamal Bell will undergo knee surgery to repair a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, receiver Calif Gossett is out with a torn Achilles tendon and defensive lineman Kendall Wilkerson will be out due to injuries sustained in a previously undisclosed car accident in the spring.   After extensive discussions and careful deliberation among the Sun Belt Conference Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, SBC COVID-19 Advisory Panel, medical advisors, and other governance groups, the Sun Belt Conference announced today that its football season will begin over Labor Day weekend. Sun Belt member institutions have focused since June on a safe return to athletic activities. We believe this timetable will allow for the healthy integration of the entire campus community for each Sun Belt member.

The 2020 Sun Belt Conference football season will be comprised of an 8-conference game schedule with an option for each member to add as many as four non-conference opponents, beginning with Week Zero. The Sun Belt will host a football championship game on December 5 between the East Division and West Division champions. If necessary, the date of the championship game may be adjusted. - Sun Belt Football

Louisiana-Monroe and Cal Poly remain on track to open the 2020 college football season at Malone Stadium despite the unknowns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. ULM athletic director Scott McDonald told the News-Star no scheduling changes are anticipated at this time. Kickoff between the Warhawks and the Mustangs is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 5. "I started visiting with (Cal Poly's) athletic director back in March when the storm clouds first appeared for all of us. We've been in contact throughout this whole period and they do plan to report to practice and play the game in September," McDonald said. "Obviously, things can change. If we've learned nothing over this time, it's that things change, but all you can do is keep those lines of communication open."

Speculation that the game would not be played began when the California State University System, which includes Cal Poly, announced its schools would continue administering online classes through the fall semester. Despite some reports to the contrary, the CSU system is not moving to a virtual-only format and will offer some in-person courses. Cal Poly began voluntary offseason in mid-June. - The News-Star

  06/04/20 - Zach RobertsonrSr/2022, Louisiana, 6-5, 297 (DS#999 OT) + More +

For an offensive lineman from Arizona State who has decided to join the Ragin' Cajuns for the 2020 college football season, it's all about connections. Zach Robertson - a 6-foot-6, 336-pounder from St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, California - played in 30 games over four seasons at Arizona State, including nine as a redshirt freshman in 2016, 12 in 2017 and nine in 2018. He started multiple games including several in 2017, when that season current UL head coach Billy Napier was Arizona State's offensive coordinator and current Cajuns offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Rob Sale was ASU's offensive line coach.

"It's huge, having some people that were in my corner from the get-go," Robertson, who graduated from Arizona State with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies, told The Daily Advertiser in a telephone interview Wednesday. "Going into this process, I was going into basically a whole different situation. Roberston, who had four different offensive line coaches during his stay at Arizona State, did not play in 2019 due to what he said were personal reasons. "I was just battling a lot of things that were going on...and it took a huge toll on my mental," he said. "I didn't know how to cope with it so I decided to step away from football for a year and get my mind back right." - Daily Advertiser

While some schools elsewhere in the country are cutting sports teams to address budget concerns, UL is not considering eliminating any of its intercollegiate programs, Ragin' Cajuns athletic director Bryan Maggard said. Akron of the MAC announced Thursday that is cutting its men's golf and cross country and women's tennis teams, and on Friday MAC-member Bowling Green announced it was eliminating its baseball program effective immediately "as part of a plan for a $2 million reduction to the operating budget of the intercollegiate athletics department." The MAC is one of the NCAA's Group of Five Conferences for football, as is the Sun Belt Conference, to which UL belongs. Asked by The Daily Advertiser on Friday if UL was planning anything similar, Maggard said, "No." That confirms what a UL spokesman told The Advertiser in late April. UL sponsors football, basketball, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track-and-field and cross country, men's golf and women's soccer. - Daily Advertiser
