JaMycal Hasty scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 22 Baylor beat Texas Tech 33-30 on Saturday in the Bears' first game as a ranked team under coach Matt Rhule. Baylor (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), which went the length of the field at the end of regulation just to get to overtime, won on Hasty's run after Trey Wolff's 35-yard field goal for Texas Tech opened the second extra period. Charlie Brewer was 24-of-37 passing for 352 yards, but threw his first three interceptions of the season. He ran for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in the first overtime.

Texas Tech (3-3, 1-2), playing its third consecutive Top 25 opponent, got to the second overtime when TJ Vasher made a diving 2-yard catch on a nice lob throw by Jett Duffey for his only TD pass. Duffey finished 31 of 42 for 362 yards and two interceptions. R.J. Turner had seven catches for 138 yards. Texas Tech took a 20-17 lead on SaRodorick Thompson's second touchdown run, a 30-yarder with 1:37 left in regulation. Thompson finished with 28 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears then were at their own 1 after Brewer got sacked on the ensuing drive. But he then had five completions for 74 yards, including an incredible 19-yard catch along the sideline by Denzel Mims. Baylor got to the 5 before taking two more shots at Mims in the end zone. He couldn't hold onto one in traffic and then drew a defensive holding call that put the ball at the 2 with 3 seconds remaining. John Mayers then kicked a tying 19-yard field goal. - Baylor/AP College Football

Charlie Brewer missed most of the fourth quarter for Baylor last week after taking a hard hit, but the Big 12's most efficient quarterback is good to go against the Red Raiders. He has 11 touchdowns without an interception, one of only three FBS quarterbacks to throw that many TDs without a pick. - AP College Football

Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer has been cleared to practice and play for the No. 22 Bears, who will be without starting left guard Connor Galvin. Coach Matt Rhule said Monday that Brewer is fine after taking a hard hit early in the fourth quarter of Baylor's 31-12 win at Kansas State on Saturday. But Galvin will miss 4-6 weeks with an unspecified lower body injury he suffered early in the first quarter.

Brewer was evaluated after taking the hit and didn't return against K-State. While not elaborating, Rhule described that move as precautionary. The quarterback has thrown for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions this season. The Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who have a seven-game winning streak and are ranked for the first time in two years, are home Saturday against Texas Tech (3-2, 1-1). - AP College Football

Joshua Mack ran for a 4-yard touchdown with six minutes left and Liberty held off New Mexico State for a 20-13 victory on Saturday night. Jason Huntley's 12-yard TD run pulled the Aggies (0-6) even at 13-apiece with 7:46 remaining. On the ensuing series, Stephen Calvert threw a 54-yard pass to Mack, who scored on the next play. New Mexico State drove to the Liberty 8, but Jessie Lemonier forced a fumble from quarterback Josh Adkins with 3:15 remaining. Liberty's Solomon Ajayi recovered the ball and the Flames ran out the clock. Mack finished with 113 yards rushing on 16 carries for Liberty (4-2). Calvert was 16-of-31 passing for 173 yards.   Baylor didn't win a conference road game last season, but had success in its first attempt this season on Saturday, beating Kansas State 31-12 to remain undefeated. Charlie Brewer led the Bears with 230 yards passing and a touchdown as Baylor got their first conference road win since beating Kansas in 2017. Baylor (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) had 426 yards of offense with only 23 minutes of possession against the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2), who have scored only two touchdowns in their last two games. "I'm really proud of our guys because this is a tough place to play with a great crowd," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "I thought our guys battled early, found a way to get a halftime lead and then grounded it out in the second half."

It was only the third conference road win for Baylor since 2016, and just the second for Rhule with the Bears. "I don't think they realize what they did because this is a hard place to win," Rhule said. John Lovett had a pair of touchdown runs and Gerry Bohanon added another scoring run for Baylor. Tyquan Thornton had 92 yards receiving with a touchdown. Denzel Mims hauled in 83 yards on five catches and JaMycal Hasty had 87 yards rushing. - Baylor/AP College Football

Stephen Calvert threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns, Antonio Gandy-Golden caught six passes for 144 yards and Liberty defeated New Mexico 17-10 on Saturday night. Calvert's touchdown passes were 3 yards to Gandy-Golden in the first quarter and 2 yards to Jerome Jackson in the second quarter. Liberty (3-2) added a 42-yard field goal by Alex Probert in the third quarter and led 17-3 deep into the final period. Gandy-Golden entered the game as the FCS leader in receiving yards (544 yards) and receiving yards per game (136 yards). Joshua Mack rushed for 95 yards for the Flames.

New Mexico (2-2) was held out of end zone until the final minute when Aaron Molina caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tevaka Tuioti with 43 seconds remaining. Liberty recovered an onside-kick and ran out the clock. Tuioti completed 12 of 26 passes for 139 yards with the touchdown and two interceptions. The Lobos ran for 223 yards, led by Ahmari Davis with 99 yards. Calvert and Gandy-Golden had huge games against New Mexico last season, as well.   John Mayers kicked a 38-yarder with 21 seconds left for the first field goal of the redshirt freshman's career, lifting Baylor to a 23-21 victory over Iowa State on Saturday after the Bears blew a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. The win in the Big 12 opener for both teams was the second in a row for the Bears (4-0, 1-0 Big 12), who won their sixth straight game going back to last season and are off to their best start in three years under coach Matt Rhule. Brock Purdy rallied the Cyclones (2-2, 0-1) with three TD drives after trailing 20-0 in the fourth quarter. But Iowa State couldn't stop Baylor's 54-yard drive to the winning points while losing a Big 12 opener for the 16th time in 18 seasons - including all four under coach Matt Campbell.

The Bears fell behind for the first time this season on Purdy's 20-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Kolar with less than four minutes to go. Charlie Brewer answered with three third-down conversions on the 14-play march, which included completions of 15 and 13 yards to Tyquan Thornton. Mayers' kick into the wind was just inside the right post after he missed badly from the same distance - 38 yards - in the first half. Baylor was behind because of a botched PAT attempt after the second of three touchdown passes from Brewer when the snap went through holder Skyler Wetzel's hands. Thornton had 11 catches for 141 yards and the last Baylor touchdown. Denzel Mims scored the first TDs and had 106 yards on six grabs. - Baylor/AP College Football

Baylor was happy to escape with a win against Rice on Saturday night. The Bears might have been even happier with the wakeup call they received. Charlie Brewer threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, Denzel Mims caught six passes for 102 yards and Baylor held on to beat Rice 21-13. "I believe this with all my heart - we needed that game," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "We needed that experience." Brewer threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Chris Platt with five minutes left in the second quarter, and ran for a 25-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left in the first half as the Bears (3-0) built a 21-3 halftime lead. Brewer finished 20 of 27 and rushed 12 times for 58 yards.

"I think it will be good for us in the long run starting next week because it will be a four-quarter game next week," Brewer said. "I thought the defense obviously played really good. The offense, it was frustrating because we couldn't capitalize on a lot of drives." Platt finished with 85 yards with the touchdown on five catches. Josh Fleeks put Baylor on the board with three minutes left in the first quarter. Baylor outgained Rice 427-242. "We preached all week that we should expect a fight because obviously, Rice, they're hungry for a win just like everyone else," Baylor linebacker Clay Johnston said. "I'm kind of thankful we had the dogfight today because we had to actually play for four quarters." - Baylor/AP College Football

The NCAA approved Liberty's two-year Football Bowl Subdivision reclassification process this week, making the Flames the 130th full-fledged member of college football's top tier. The process was finalized when the NCAA Division I Strategic Vision and Planning Committee approved Liberty's annual report and updated strategic plan.

Liberty had to meet several requirements for approval to play as an independent, unaffiliated with any conference, at the FBS level, which included financial commitment, scholarship increase, facility improvements and minimum attendance. The football program is offering the maximum 85 scholarships allowed at the FBS level, an increase of 22 scholarships from when it was a member of the second-tier Football Championship Subdivision. The Flames had 85 scholarship players on the roster last season. - Lynchburg News and Advance
